I've just posted on the Morton thread, that Pre-season friendlies are supposed to be boring - it's one of the unwritten rules of football.
Would anyone care to challenge this "in court"? (Oh and anyone who mentions Real Madrid must be an old git)

You'll get no argument from me Neil.
Most interesting friendly I've seen?
Probably the one at Crawley a couple of years back for the sheer novelty value of seeing the likes of Lombardo and Curcic gracing the Broadfield Stadium - especially once one of the Crawley lads decided to try to make a name for himself by taking Lombardo out - the great man was not amused!
Or the reserve team friendly at Bromley a few years back when 2 or 3 loudmouths decided to use a lengthy treatment break to yell extremely louds and particularly nasty insults at Ron Noades, who they'd just spotted on the other side of the ground - I think they were Bromley fans but I can't be sure.

Palace have played East Grinstead a few times before - the ground there makes Crawleys Broadfield stadium look like the San Siro!
Nigel Martyn played in one match - had run the full length of the pitch to get involved in a corner kick and then had to pelt back at full steam as Grinstead caught us on the counter attack - anyway he got back in time to do a comedy lean against the goal post and pretend to have a fag.
Guess you had to be there really...

Brentford V Palace for a testimonial after our title season. A grand total of about 20 Palace turned up, and Allan Brighton Scum who cost us the cup final Gunn was the referee receievd dogs abuse from the Palace faithful. In the end they had to call the Police in to calm down the Palace support after a bog seat was thrown onto the pitch.
Derry Away during the season was a good laugh, or maybe it was because it was because i was pissed?

Evening Tom!
I think you've illustrated my point quite well matey. Friendlies are memorable for incidents and events surrounding the match, rather than the game itself.
Don't get me wrong I love friendlies and go to as many as possible, but let's face it the actual game itself is usually pants.
You are right about that Brentford game - a real hoot.

I ended up at Newquay against Hull City in the summer. Memorable only because Hull's player manager deliberatly broke some 18 year old postman's leg (he was playing at the time but this didn't make what happened any more acceptable).
Have been to a few Palace pre-season friendlies (Chelsea at Selhurst is a dim and distant memory) but I can't remember anything about any of them.
Sombero maybe if we meet up in the coming weeks we should restrict the conversation to Noades. That way there is no danger of us disagreeing with each other!
Oh and of course large Vodkas and Red Bulls should also help matters.

Did I imagine it or did we play West Ham in Alan Devonshire's testamonial about 10 years ago? Pistike you were there with me weren't you?
Also Tony Adam's testamonial 5 or 6 years back when Andy Preece ran them ragged!!
Now that was good.

The thing I remember about pre season friendlies (when we go to Crawley, Orient, Gillingham, Millwall, but I don't remember one at Charlton) is when the team is announced, or we bring on a sub, some new kid, and everyone goes "who's he?".
Now that seems to happen every week.

We should play Welling United. Their ground is the San Siro

Charlton 1995 - Alan Smith decided to take himself and the first team to Crawley and send the reserves to face Charlton instead.
Palace still managed a 1-0 win against Charlton's first team!

Indeed indeed indeed young Palace supporter.
Now you mention it I seem to remember that everywhere we looked people were singing "knees up muvver bran" and eating jellied eels having left their front doors wide open.
As far as Andy Preece running someone ragged is concerned I'm afraid that you're on your own with that one!

James,
No you didn't imagine it - it was about August 1989 and we got stuffed 3-1.
Who remembers,
the home friendly against Birmingham when we were winning 1-0 and the lights failed and the game was abandoned.
Colchester away the day after Iraq invaded Kuwait. Songs that day included "can you hear Iraq sing? no-ooh." and the immortal "hung like a donkey" tribute to the ninja.

Yes there was a pre season v Chelsea years ago at Selhurst and all hel broke lose. I seem to remember that they were still doing some work on the ground prior to the season and all the builders stuff (planks of wood etc) were used as weoapons.
My favourite friendly was away at Bournemouth in about 1976 ish? I was on a family holiday in the area, Elton John/KikiDee were No. 1 with Don't go Breaking my Heart, and I was wearing my first pair of DM's, bought from a shop in Mew Milton, £7.99. Quite a few Palace there behind the goal, small fight broke out, Swindlehurst scored a fanatastic goal from a free kick.

Thank you oh elderly wise one, as I recall that was my first visit to the land of
'yes guvnor I remember when all this was docks, they bombed our houses but they couldn't break our spirit. Do you remember when the old King came down ere. Cor blimey Jerry couldn't beat us. We only got an outside toilet in 1997. There's a real sense of community here (as long as you're white anglo saxon with a pit bull). Hackney Marshes luvverly jubberly. We never had nuffin when I was a kid, but me mum always put a luvverly spread on Sundays. Me dad used to give me a clip but it did me no 'arm. Remember down the tube station singing along when the bombs were going off. I never locked my back door.'
Of course you didn't. All the burglars were off stealing things from people who actually own items of taste and value!

Good point, well made - can't argue with that - a great second half ... and we beat the buggers there in the League a couple of months later
the Chelsea game was before the 79/80 season. It was the first chance to see Gerry Francis and Mike Flanagan and we hammered them 5-0. It was pretty well attended because the 2nd Division championship trophy was presented to Jim Cannon before the game. you could entertain yourself breaks in the match by watching groups of fans chasing each other up and down and across the Holmesdale all afternoon. those were the days.
anyone recall a pointless mid-season friendly against Hibernean in 1977/78. we were supposed to play Blackpool but their whole team went down with flu and it was called off on the morning off the match. for some bizarre reason, Hibs just happened to be in the area and duly beat us 2-0.
interested in sydney.

I remember through the dark mists of time Palace playing Chelsea at the Sports Centre (perhaps they were getting used to it back then just in case). The game was totally unremembeable apart from an old bloke , I was young then , who raced down the stands at half time to hurl abuse at Ron (chopper harris). The abuse was terrible to hear and remember it word for word "Dirty Harris" he yelled over and over. Still he had a point.

My first pre-season friendly was at Alan Devonshires testimonial.... I can remember we lost.
We did play Clowntown in 1995, however, I'm sure it was 0-0.
Didn't we play Tottenham in a testimonial/friendly at home, some years ago!!!?? I'm sure I have memories of that........

There's no mention of the score in the Palace v arse Tony Adams testemonial. I'm 99% certain we won (Johnny Salad scored?). I can't be sure as I didn't go as a matter of principle.
I wouldn't give that ugly alcoholic more booze money so he could write off another car while off his head. Scum.
Egg,
I was at the Bournemouth pre-season friendly in 1976 and for the one and only time in my life on seeing a certain 16 year old left- back predicted there and then that he'd play for England one day. (didn't predict we'd lose him to the arse though!)
How come Palace never have any good pre season friendlies any more eh ?
It's always Scandin-bloody-avia or China. What's wrong with Ireland? - Moan Utd, Liverpool, Sunderland, Everton, Boro, etc, they all play there against local opposition.

Arsenal was indeed 3-1 to the golden boys.
Charlton was definately 1-0, terrible game tho' you probably fell asleep Eagle Mart. I'll post up the match report I wrote at the time when I get home.
Last time we played Spurs in a testimonial was for the great JC in 1988 - Coppell came on in the second half and ran riot until Billy Manual hacked him down. The crowd went absolutely mad - Manual was quickly subbed and hustled down the Tunnel. The game finished 3-3.

PJ - I remember the Hibs friendly, I seem to remember their were about 50 Hibs fans there - quite impressive seeing it was at such short notice.
My memory tells me we lost 1-0.
Perhaps after the Palace v Morton scoreline confusion, we could open up a new forum for posthumous predictions on scorelines in friendlies no-one remembers?
Anyone remember the friendly against Japan during Mullery's era?

I can't remember if they were pre season or not but friendlies against Asante Kotoko and Dallas Cowboys. What were the scores? All I can remember is the programme for the Dallas Cowboys game had a front cover that opened up like two big gates at the rodeo - probably still got it somewhere.

The Asante Kototo game was played the week before the Morton game that started all this nonsense off. Palace won 3-1.
I think Johnny told me that the Dallas Tornado game was 2-0.

i will never forget the Chelsea game we won 5-0 in 1979. It was Chelsea's first game where they were allowed away fans at a game and i was in the Old Stand, i am sure in the middle by the tunnel. when did it move?? there was the senior policeman on duty that day next to me ( i've always been brave) and he was asking another policeman in the holmesdale who the large contingent at the back by the bar were. the soon to be sacked PC replied just a few lads having a drink when they moved enmasse through the terraces, causing mayhem!!

Yes definitely the Chelsea & Arsenal pre season were the best and most memorable. I remember the headline in the Sunday Express the day after the thrashing of Chelsea - "Blue Murder".
Fulham away (3-1) with Alan Smith's champions sticks in my mind too. A steward let us in the main satnd because my 73 year old dad would've probably passed out with the heat on the terrace. I remember the Riverside stand having no seats except for the centre block & away block, and 3 red faced pissed blokes asleep in front of me for most of the game.
Oh yes, and the Hibs score was 2-0, and their posse sat at the back of block B!
Millwall pre season 1990 at the concentration camp. Salako absolutely p*ssed on them, and I remember Wright sliding into the hoardings and pretending to be injured. As the Millwall all started cheering and the physio got off the bench, he jumped up and ran off laughing into their penalty area, waving at us.
We played Vasco da Gama and Flamengo on an end of season tour once, but that was in my Subbuteo league about 1977/78. Does anyone have the programmes for those games? Don't worry about translation, I can use the Portugese/English bbs service to read it.

3-1 Palace, I believe Tom - I seem to remember we did all four corners before the game and laughed at Ian Wright missing a penno in the Chariddy Shield!
Was anyone else in the Duke of York earlier that day when an Arsenal fan walked in completely kitted out for Wembley: flags, hat, face-paint etc. He couldn't understand why about 50 Palace fans burst into fits of laughter ... until we told him the game had just kicked off. He'd thought it was a 3pm kick-off instead of noon!

Hi Neil,I'm just going on what I read the score was in the rev' Sands' book for that Dallas Tornado game,it was pretty much a reserve side we had out for that game.Anyone else remember the Kent County Challenge cup?.It was a pre season tournament before the 75/76 season kicked off,and I think the teams involved were: Charlton,Gillingham,Palace, and Millwall(I think!).Can anyone shed more light on this competition?.I went to the Palace Charlton game at Selhurst on a baking hot day,but I really can't remember too much about it,apart from lots of fighting on Whitehorse lane, and on the top deck of a 68 bus!.Who won the KCC that season?,and how many years did it run for?,I'd love to know.

Johnny baby,
I remember the Charlton game. I stood in the Old Stand Enclosure and just before kick-off, Tony Burns injured his leg against a post and had to pull out. As we had no reserve keeper lined up, NICKY CHATTERTON went in goal and played admirably. We lost 1-0. I also remember Alan Whittle coming on as sub and he had no number on the back of his shirt.
Do I win an honorary "Neil the Eagle" anorak?
We played Coventry in a pre-season evening game and I went alone and sat quietly on the Holmesdale.
I'd got there a few minutes late and as I hadn't spoken to anyone assumed it had been a 0-0 draw.
It turned out both sides had scored in the opening 60 seconds and it was 1-1!
It may well have been the same pre-season in which we beat West Ham at Selhurst and lost 1-2 to Chelsea.
