View Full Version : The last time we threw away a 3 goal lead?

Neil or someone's got to help here, because I can't ever remember seeing Palace having a 3 goal lead and not winning before. There must have been times in the 25 years I've been going, but when?

Not in the last 50, from my (sometimes selective) memory. Tough for us fans, but the team must be absolutely gutted.

Still, given the other results we are nearly OK - though no playoffs this year.

I can't recall it happening in a single game but the closest comparable match that I remember was a League Cup tie against Peterborough in the early eighties. We won the 1st leg at home 3-0 and then contrived to lose the away leg 3-0 before going out on penalties. We were in the 2nd division then (under Mullery I think) and to make matters worse, Peterborough were a 3rd or 4th division side. Things were so bad in those days, I wasn't in the least bit suprised when it happened.

God yes I went up to that game. Got in 20 minutes late because of a train problem, watched Mullery's pitiful idiots in a Man U kit. As mentioned, I kind of expected it then though.

I seem to remember a series of matches a few years ago (1996/7 perhaps) when we built up two or three goal leads and ended up holding on for dear life at the end. My recollection is that we did manage to hang on, usually for the three points, but the way we let the opposition catch or nearly catch us must have encouraged other teams even when they seemed in hopeless positions. I think it was about then that I decided that with Palace, a lead was never big enough to let supporters feel confident going into the last 10 minutes.

I'm afraid your faith in my anorak is misplaced this time matey ... I haven't a clue ... the afore-mentioned P'Boro games are the only thing that springs to mind.

... another similar one springs to mind. Away to Notts County during the 93/94 1st Division championship campaign, we were leading 2-0 but managed to turn the match around, as only Palace`knows how, into a 3-2 defeat. A real sickener; at least we came away with a point on Saturday.

Lloyd-Webber is putting on a new stage production of 'Dr Jeckyll & Mr Hyde'. The Crystal Palace first team are reckoned to be a shoo-in for the lead role.

I haven't been this frustrated about na match since the last 10 minutes against Tranmere.

Weren't we 4-1 up away to Leicester (1988??) and came away with a 4-4 draw? Or has my memory completely gone?

No, you're absolutely right - I was there. I think Leicester had pulled it back to 4-2 at half time. George Wood was responsible for at least one when he came charging out to near the touchline and then scuffed it straight to a Leicester player and was stranded. I think Phil barber scored one - can't remember anything else.

Sorry to be a bore lads, but the scoring went thus…

1-0 Mr 110%
1-1 Gary Lineker
2-1 Glen Pennyfather (his best ever goal for Palace)
2-2 Keith Weller
3-2 Ian Wright
4-2 Ian Wright

Half-time

4-3 Frank Worthington (assisted by George Wood)
4-4 Denis Rofe

Alright, I made up the Leicester scorers, but you get the general idea....

Yes Leicester is right. George Wood was totally at fault for at least 2 of the goals. Some story or other circulated about him bird watching when one of the Leics goals went in. George only played one more game for Palace which was the following week at Newcastle in the 3rd round of the Cup (lost 1-0). Gascoigne scord a stunner NOT georges fault I can safetly say.

No - Leicester is not right - we threw away a 2 goal lead. Not 3.

I'm with Aidan on this one, it was definitely "only" a two goal lead.

Mind you, can anyone remember Palace ever turning round a three goal deficit?

Whoops, I appear to be wrong. Next thing I know I will be claiming to have seen Ray Lewington performing heroics in a Palace shirt.

Off to revise my Palace history...

You're right Andy, Fashanu played in that game. Well, he was on the pitch I suppose. Not that I can remember though!

Bit off subject, but didn't John Fashanu play in that humiliation at Peterborough?

I remember that game. Ian Wright scored and then ran along the Arthur Wait slapping the crowds hands as he went past. Being a little kid at the front I stuck my hand out and he slapped it. IT STUNG LIKE HELL!
It was a cold and wet day.

And it was also at Ewood Park. What game are you thinking of?

That was 1995/96. We made a habit of winning 3-2 that year. We won 3-2 at Leicester and West Brom from being 3-0 up, and were 3-0 up at Portsmouth on New Year's Day 1996 when they brought it back to 3-2. It was only thanks to an amazing save by Nigel Martyn (from John Durnin) in the last minute that we won that game (very entertaining it was too).

I don't know- It was either '88 or '89 without doubt!
This game was at home although I can't remember whether it was a 3-goal lead which was subsequently lost game. But there were a few goals in it.

Strathclyde Eagle, we won 3-2 against Wolves (H) that season as well, going 3-0 up with Dougie Freedman scoring a hat-trick that evening.

Freedman also had a blinder at the Pompey game... ah those were the days - winning when we scored 3 goals... hanging onto leads..
