This must have been done before but I'm only new and havent seen it. I was thinking today about the best team we could put out from the players we had in the 90s. I spent at least an hour of a crap day figuring out what my team would be. The ones I have picked are my favourite players so you probably wont agree with it but here goes...

Martyn

Patterson Jihai

Young Shaw

Thomas Mullins

Lombardo Houghton

Bright Wright

Subs Gray,Freedman,Thorn,Mcgoldrick,Pardew

No room for Hopkin? Or Jansen?

Strathclyde Eagle,
interesting to see you have Patterson in your worst team while James has him in his best. I'm leaning more towards your view.

GARETH SOUTHGATE
MATT JANSEN

Give me Shaw instead of Pembo and Bright instead of Dougie and I'd be happy with that as my top 11, Sombrero.

The bench would be open for some debate, for starters Edworthy would be nowhere to be seen on mine - he'd be closer to my worst XI.

shaw was inept as a full back - apart from trying to emulate david hopkin, in the 'score own goals' department.

pembo was so under-rated, it was tragic.
lets face it, we haven't had a brilliant right back for donkeys !!!

i am sure you will correct me if i am wrong, but i think freedman scored more hattricks than wrighty ??

freedman was a sublimely skillful player, who i feel that if we had not sold him, we wouldn't of been relegated last time.
another 'flair' player that coppell didn't rate (sighs).

I agree with Neil on Sombrero's choice, ie pretty good except Pembo and Dougie Sombrero's right about right backs; my own favourite was Johnny H, as the best of a mediocre bunch, but I also had a soft spot for Pembo, because of his commitment, so wouldn't argue too much. Can't go for Dougie, though, He may have scored more hattricks than Wright and he could certainly be sublimely skilful when he felt like it, but it didn't often happen against the big boys (remember his disappearing act against Leicester at Wembley?). It's got to be Bright for that spot, though I'd like to have seen more of Matt Jansen.

For any of you who are interested Darren Patterson set up a goal in Dundee United's game tonight. Unfortunately for him it was scored by Lee McCulloch of Motherwell (misplaced back-pass apparently).

Every time I read of Patterson he is doing something inept. Dundee United fans must hate him.

Patterson made it my team because he was a big,scary oaf.We havent had anyone else like him who scared opposition for ages and I did say it was my favorite players,not neccessarily the best.On a different note,what about the most memorable goals of the decade?Mine would be

Wright's 1st in final, Salako v Forest in 91 cup, Southgate v Portsmourth 95(??), Freedman's 1st in Wolves play off and Hopkin in the final.

It has to ne Wright and Bright as a scoring partnership they were just about the best in the country. Remember the pics in the Sun tailored up class. Playing Wright with Freedman wouldn't be a good balance or am I getting too technical for this thread.
Bright's only fault was his infuriating ability to get himself into offside positions.

Freedman for me was never consistent enough and this was could be proved by the comments in crowd when he played (not always complementary). I would honestly place Jansen, Shipperley, Stewart, Armstrong and Dowie above Freedman. Lets face it he his not scoring 25 goals for Forest this season.

Thus.

Martyn, Humphrey, Coleman, Young, Gordon,
Southgate, Lombardo, Thomas, Gray (I never got over him walking out a second time), Wright, & Bright.

subs.

Armstrong
Salako (he can also be sub keeper)
Thorn
Shaw
Rodger

can Madden count.

The team of 1991 finished 3rd, our best ever, so by definition is our best ever "team", I suppose. However, individually, I would pick:

Nigel Martyn (best ever keeper);

John Humphrey (best defensive right back but also good at supporting attack);
Dean Gordon (good for 6 goals a season to make up for his defensive mistakes);
Craig Moore (classy - always had time on the ball);
Eric Young (just ahead of Andy Thorn - usually very solid);

Attilio Lombardo (the most cultured player EVER to play for us - a privilege for us to watch him in our shirt);
David Hopkin (good at tackling, scoring and running - the perfect midfielder?);
Gareth Southgate (ditto);
John Salako (the best winger in the country at the time);

Ian Wright (best ever striker? again, a privilege to have seen his whole Palace career - ability, energy, pace, enthusiasm and dedication - he had them all);
Mark Bright (not as skilful as Freedman or Jansen, but great in the air and the perfect link with midfield and Wright.)

Subs:
Carlo Nash
Marc Edworthy
Andy Gray
Matt Jansen
Chris Armstrong

Bloody hell, doing this really does make you think of what great players we've seen over the last 10 years, and what might have been if Wright had stayed. http://www.cpfc.org/ubb/blue.gif

If I could just get my 2 pence worth, I believe the team of the 90's should be like so:

****, I've forgotten Hopkin and Houghton too.
I also liked Edworthy. I'll have to think again. The latest edition of OMP as a definative 11 based on readers votes.

Preposterous compared to the big clubs. Bout how about starting a Palace Hall of Fame (Shame), not just one for us p!ssing about at work either.

Right, here goes:
Take the best of the cup run team of 1990 and the 3rd place/Zenith team of 1990/1991 and improve it (even with 5 England internationals and one stand by. (Martyn, Thomas, Salako, Wright, Gray; Humphrey) That means out go Pembo (Humphrey was better), bring in a proper left back, improve the 1990 defence, drop Gray, Super Al. The all-time best Palace striking partnership stays.

Martyn

Humphrey, Gordon
Moore, Thorn

Lombardo, Thomas (capt), Hopkin, Salako

Wright, Bright

Thats a bit hard on Ninja, who would be sub and Coleman.

The bench:
Mullins
Jansen
Ninja
Southgate
Coleman

Can't think of a decent enough second goalie (although I liked Carlo, he's just not good enough in this class). Sorry to Jolly.

Manager, of course, Sir Steve Coppell.

I don’t know if changing the formation is allowed but anyway:

Martyn

Humphrey Gordon
Southgate Moore

Lombardo Mullins Thomas (c)

Bright Wright Jansen

Chester 76
24-04-2000, 12:22 AM
Martyn (no other choice)
Humphrey (close but part of 90-91 defence)
Shaw (90-91 form & worked well with Salako)
Moore (classy defender, all too brief stay)
Young (tough on Thorn & Coleman)
Lombardo (the best)
Hopkin (shouldn`t have gone to Leeds)
Thomas (better player than the press said)
Salako (pre injury international class)
Wright (pace & hunger)
Bright (ideal partner for Wright)

Subs
Southgate
Mullins
Jansen
Mcgoldrick
Morrison

Chocky

Best:
Martyn
Humphrey Ninja Moore (would say Coleman but won't!) Jihai or Phelan
Lombardo Thomas Hopkin Salad
Wright and can't understand anyone who would leave out Brighty - he MADE Wright and correct me if I'm wrong, had a better goals to games ratio that Wright.

Worst:
Day
Patterson Andersen Sinnott Shaw (I always thought he was absolutely hopeless at left back, and superb at centre half) or Amselem
Cox (Premiership winger!!!) Zohar Brolin Mortimer
Boere Taylor

subs: all the crappy players we got on trial like Bilio, Fumaca and the like. Wilmott was pants. And Newman & Bowry for being the most lightweight midfield duo the world has ever seen.

I would like to replace Cox with someone from the present squad, but it would be unfair at this time. But I can't WAIT to put him in once he leaves. And let's hope it's soon.

Tony Humphreys

Chocky. Couldn't agree more about Brighty; it's inconceivable that he wouldn't be in this team. Incidentally, in League games he scored 92 in 227 whereas Wright scored 89 in 225, so that makes Brighty marginally better. Anyway, who cares? What a combination......if only...

Am I the only one who thinks that if Marcus Bent had stayed longer we would be including him on at least the bench for this!!!!?
