View Full Version : Best PALACE Goal Ever?

Easter 1988 (I think), "Kelvin Morton Day"
Palace 2, Seaweed 1
Wrighty latches on to Jeff Hopkins' hopeful punt down the left wing and instantly volleys it into the net from 30-odd yards.
They don't come much better than that !

Hopkin at Wembley - even if it started us off on the dark path that we now tread - I cannot remember being more jubilant about any goal. (Pardew's I was in shock, and then practically catatonic when I realise just who put the ball in the Scousers net).
re: Ian's finest v the Seaweed - I was doing the PA that day and had a perfect view from the old PA room in the Memebers stand of the ball curling round Keeley. In my excitement I turned the mic up far too loudly to announce the goalscorer and most of South London heard me screaming "First goal to the Eagles - IAN WRIGHT!!!" - Rob Fox would have been sooo proud.

I tend to block out the memory of most opposition goals, so I couldn't tell you how good (or otherwise) they were. I'm usually looking for someone to blame!
I do vividly remember Gascoigne's in the FA Cup in 1988, a 40-yd piledriver past Georgie Wood in his last game. He was still quoting this has the best goal he ever scored several years later (even after the Arse Semi in 91).

Peter Taylor vs. Preston on a Sunday back in the 70's. Never captured on film, but he ran seemingly the length of the pitch beatingplayer after player before coolly slotting the ball past their keeper.
PS - Since treated like shit by the FA. What are they on? His record as Under 21 Manager is pretty good and they give him the boot.Makes sense doesn't it?

Jansen's away at Villa a little while ago was a good 'un.
As for the best goal against us, how about Claridge at Wembley? Or Mark Hughes' equaliser in the Cup Final?
I'll get me coat.

Best Palace goal ever ?
Don Rogers in the 5-0 victory over Manchester United at SP in 1972.
Rounding Alex Stepney and slotting home from a narrow angle - brilliant !!

Sept 1979, Palace are 3-1 up at home to Ipswich, they have a corner. Jim Cannon helps clear the danger and plays it quickly out wide. Flanagan takes it down the wing whilst Cannon sprints up the middle. Flanagan crosses and Cannon volleys it into the corner of the net. He throws himself on his back and just lies there as Palace go top of the league. Swindlehurst's flying volley in that game was a cracker too.
It's differcult to just mention one goal. Kenny Brown in 95-96, versus Derby, the away end at Baseball Ground went wild. Certainly the Hopkin's goal at Wembley was excellant. Also 94-95 against West Ham at Selhurst, Houghton's late winner.
When we say the 'best goal' do we mean in terms of quality or significance? To be honest I don't ever care too much about a goals quality, it is the significance of a goal that counts to me, although if it can be a cracking goal as well then great. Ones that spring to mind are; Andy Thorn v Liverpool in the Coca Cola, Coleman v ch*l*ea, both Salako goals at highbury, Armstrong v Millwall in the 94 season, Dowie against Moan Utd in the FA Cup semi, Kenny Brown v Charlton in the playoffs (also I'm sure Anti Addick and others will remember fondly Shipperley's last minute shot which crawled over the line in the last minute at Selhurst, after Clownton had totally outplayed Palace to gift us an underserved victory) , Freedman v Wolves also in the playoffs, Curcic against Derby last season,
The best goal this season has to be Gary Rowett's OG for us against Birmingham...smashing strike as well! The best overall though was surely Hopkin's against Sheffield Utd, a brilliant goal socred in the most important game of the season.

Any other 'old gits' here who remember Rachid Harkouk's amazing goal against - someone, God knows who it was - I remember him running towards the Whitehorse Lane end, with the ball dropping over his shoulder, and Harkouk volleying the ball into the net from 30 yards or so. Brilliant.
The Don Rogers goal against ManU (mentioned above) was another one I remember with great fondness... and Whittle's first goal for the Club in the same game was quite special.
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Ian Wright's spectacular effort against Wimbledon from almost the half way line (in what I think may have been one of Wimbledon's last games at Plough Lane).
For orgasmic mind blowing Yeeeeeessssss appeal, however, I am split between the Pardew goal V Liverpool, and Hopkin's last minute winner in the POF. I suppose the winner has to be Hopkin's winner, if only for the subsequent knees up and the first meaningful win at Wembley (ignoring ZDS silliness).

All of the goals in the 4-1 win over Villa (I think) in the Coca cup a few years back - they all just seemed to fly in - and I remember almost passing out with shock when Darren Pitcher curled a beauty from about 25 yards into the top corner...unbelievable
Also Armstrong vs Middlesborough in the league in 1994 and Deano's vs Leeds at home in the Premiership (the 1-2 and left foot drive from 25 yards)

Just thought of some more beauties -
Johnny Salad vs Coventry away in 1994-5? - not only cos it curled into the top corner, but it also shut the Cov fans up who were singing you're going down with the Villa (turns out they were right about the going down part though)
And what about gareth taylors goal against Port vale in the fog - that was a collectors item!!!

Johnny Salad from the half way line against Forest.
Canon against Ipswich to go top (I'm with you on that one Chocky - but I am convinced that that move was started by Sampson tackling back deep in our own half.)
Hoppy for the excorcism of the previous years play off final.
Yogi, Whittle, Rogers et al in the the games against Man United & Sheffield United - high scoring romps of joy.

If I remember rightly Don Rogers' goal won The Big Match Golden Goal of the season.

Didn't he get a Hat-trick? I know the one that won it was the run from the halfway line he took round the keeper(Stepney?) and banged in.

Cant believe no-ones gone for the opener against Liverpool in the semi - great run, great cross, great volley from Brighty but the best bit of all was the ball hitting Mcmarne's head just before the top of the net. Really felt like we'd K.O.'d them. And it was so unexpected...

Mrs Minchella the peanutt seller. Used to sell monkey nuts on the Holmesdale in the 1970s
Cannons goal against Ipswich (as already mentioned) and Hoppos goal against Sheffield.
Another (I dont remember the details to well) was the most amazing own goal I have ever seen. I think it was against Leicester in the late 70s early 80s. The ball was punted back to the full back in the air, he spun round and vollied it into his own net. Quite bizarre.

I don't know about the best goal but a sweet one none the less was in the last couple of minutes against Portsmouth (86-87??). They'd brought about 10,000 up to see them grab the point they needed to reach the top flight. The buggers were already celebrating. All I remember was Wright (I think!)and their Alan Knight going for the ball and somehow it very slowly trickling into the back of the net. There was that slow dawning feeling that the ball was rolling into the net that could only be confirmed when the net bulged - a bit like Hoppo at Wembley I suppose. Seconds later Vince Hilaire did a crazy tackle on Andy Gray and was off (bitter-sweet??). Then a mad pitch invasion and Pompey having to wait another week for their promotion.
Best all round game for goals - Man City in the Coca Cola a couple of years back. If only we'd had that form in the league....

According to Alan Hansen on Match of the 90's a couple of weeks ago, Palace caught Liverpool on the break for the equaliser. Could this be Mr Hansens strange sense of irony, or does his memory deceive him?
Southgate against pompey and hoppy in the play off final. The funniest goal i have ever seen was against birmingham last season at selhurst, it still makes me laugh when ever I think about it http://cpfc.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

I agree with LP its the significance of the goal that's often more important than the quality.
Thats why for me the best goal will always (probably) be Gray's equaliser at Villa Park that took the game into extra time.
I don't know why but for some really weird reason I knew as Grobla flapped at Thomas' header and Gray nipped in that we were actually gonna win.
Don't ask me why 'cos we obviously weren't going to really.
...and then we did!
That Gascoigne 40 yarder was a goodie (that was at St James' Park right, am I thinking of the same goal?)

More recently, Lombardo at Leeds two seasons back. Also that season our two goals in the 2-5 defeat at Bolton were both screamers.
I seem to remember Armstrong scoring a goal from an impossibly tight angle at Blackburn, an evening game, possibly 1994/95.

How about Ian Wright vs Leeds at Elland Rd in '91. Quick throw from Martyn to Salako, who went all the way to the byline, then hung it up for Wright to power in. You really had to be there to see how long Wright was hanging in the air before he buried it.
Then Salako bundled home a late winner after the the most one-sided second-half I've ever seen, the Leeds fans took it all in good grace and Palace went on to dazzle Europe the following season...........whoops, ideal-world syndrome again.

Not necessarily the best, but my earliest recollection of a stunner was Peter Burridge's left footed volley from the edge of the area from a corner, in a 3-1 victory over 1st Division Forest in the 4th round FA Cup 1964-65. Anyone else there then ?
SteveB
24-05-2000, 12:19 AM
Yes, I saw Burridge's goal against Forest, and most people who saw it felt that it was one of the best ever. I thought that it was volleyed from a very low cross from Holton, rather than a corner.
Other nominations from the 60s and 70s - just about any scored by Colin Taylor, including the one he hit for Walsall against us, which got him noticed by Bert Head. And Roger Hoy's against Chelsea in 1969/70 - headed from the edge of the penalty area.

This is like naming your top ten records-you do it and then you remember another 100 or so you'd forgotten,an impossible task almost!.
For me,goals that stick out recently are Matt Jansen at Villa in 97/98,Marcus Bent at Bolton in the same season, and Hopkin's classic in the play off final. From the distant past I'd go for John Hughes v Sheffield Utd in 71,Alan Whittle V Man U in 72, and Peter Taylor V Chelsea (free kick)in 76.But my all time favourite has to be Dean Gordon at Bolton in 97/98.I don't think I've ever seen a ball hit so hard and so well,if that goal had been scored by a Brazilian it would still be shown on the TV regularly. He also scored a similar rocket at Derby a few years before that I wouldn't mind seeing again. When it comes to goals,I've always liked the spectacular ones ahead of the well worked ones.

But my favourite ever goal (for the romance as much as anything) is definitely Peter Taylor's free kick v Chelsea (FA Cup - St Valentines Day Massacre) on that brilliant cup run. M40 Eagle,
I have tried to obtain this video from both BBC and Sky, after I saw the highlights on one of those romantic Dickie Davies/Bobby charlton programmes.
I contacted the BBC. This is the reply I received:
"Unfortunately a video is not commercially available for this programme and due to copyright, contractual and economic reasons we are unable to provide a one-off copy. I am sorry I cannot be of further assistance on this occasion".
So, has anybody got any idea where we can get a video of Chelsea v Palace Feb 14th 1976?

I've never quite understood the fuss about Gareths goal against Pompey. It was a good shot, yes, but it's hardly relevant to bang on about how far he ran - nobody challenged him - he didn't have to beat anybody.
Armstrong is a toad but his flying header from Bowry's cross in the same game was a much, much better goal - possibly the best headed goal I've ever seen at Palace.
