Very, very good signing that from where I'm sitting, particularly on a free. Very talented, creative player and an age where he's potentially going to be playing his best years of football for Palace. Suspect a fair few other CCC clubs are going to be looking enviously at this one. Career stalled? So what? You twist the key and start the engine up again.

At his age it's a bit early to write him off as "was a good player". After all he has more of career ahead than behind.

Going missing away from home is a Charlton triat. Newcastle a couple of years ago?:D

I don't understand why Soares gets the abuse for a bad midfielder when you consider some of the shite we've had here in the past. If we had the money i'd happily take him back and use him as a squad player.

Agree precisely. He played well, yet still was criticised on occasions, for little reason other than one poor game. A bit like the Lawrence situation. Lawrence plays at CB. He is a RB. You cannot criticise the fact that he is not his best at CB.

can we please, please, please, please, please, please not lambast the guy before he's played.

we've got him, we're paying his wages, it's an investment on behalf of cpfc, so we may as well get behind the lad.

the bbs collectively has along history, and is guilty of, judging players before they've kicked a ball in anger. let's see what he's got first (in a palace shirt), and let's not get on his back if he misplaces a pass in the first home match.

Lets not go here again...this thread is about Ambrose not about a has-been or never-will-be player that is best suited to League 2 at best..

A has-been at 22 ? Signed for a premier league club, then as he is a youngster gets loaned out too shapen up ? Sinclaire, Cork, Manciene ?

152 games for palace, also in the top flight with us, was good enough not too be sold then.

The things people like you say about some of our youth players especially soares in unbelivable, you can call him a has been or whatever if he is in league 2 by the age of 30.

But hes not hes 22 !

Said in the SLP on Friday that Sheffield United have tried to sign him but that he's told them he's got an agreement with us to sign on 1 July. He must have already signed a pre-contract agreement - or at least I hope. I suppose Warnock wouldn't have spoken in public about the move if it wasn't 100% agreed.

CRYSTAL Palace are closing in on their first signing of the summer - Charlton midfielder Darren Ambrose.

The South London Press understands that the 25-year-old, who has been released by the relegated Addicks, is set to sign on July 1.

The former England U21 international spent the start of last season on loan with former club Ipswich - but when the Tractor Boys opted not to push through a permanent deal he returned to The Valley in January.

Ambrose will be hoping that his move across South London revitalises a career which has gone off the boil in the last couple of years.

Cannot see him as a right sided player, don't think he has ever really done it in that position. The place he has looked good, on occasions, is being the runner from midfield, and we have Danns and Carle for that position. This summer we have to be very precise with what we are looking for. If we go 4-4-2 with Ambrose out right i will be even more confident of a lower half finish next season.

This is probably my favourite post about Ambrose by possibly the most astute and eloquent poster on these boards:

Neil Warnock says he's been signed to play in a free role (as a striker) to put a smile on Darren's face.

I tell you something, it's like playing Speroni at centre-back. It's just a joke. Why can't we play people in their natural positions and then we would at least have something to assess.

At the moment, I can tell you what's going to happen before a ball has even been kicked. We're going to lack width, Lee's going to be isolated with no crosses coming his way and Ambrose is going to wander around looking lost for the whole game, except when we've won a free-kick or a corner.

Ambrose is playing well because he has found the right manager, something that has eluded him for years at Newcastle and Charlton. He isn't going to walk out on the thing that has brought him back to form unless he is forced to. I think that it would be the last straw for Warnock too if we got an offer and Simon Jordan insists on it ?

Unfortunately I fear if realistic-ish bids come in for any of our players they will bite their hands off for the cash.

What is realistic for Ambrose? I suspect if a £1m bid comes in then the club may see it as a 'free' million and take it. Pure speculation of course and hopefully completely inaccurate.

DARREN Ambrose has said he expects to still be at Crystal Palace after the January transfer window. The former Newcastle and Ipswich midfielder has already grabbed 11 goals this season and looks set to attract interest in the new year. With finances tight at Selhurst Park it remains to be seen whether Palace chairman Simon Jordan would accept any offers made for the 25-year-old, who signed on a free transfer when he was released by Charlton in July. But Ambrose has spelt out his desire to stay in SE25. He said: "Im delighted if people are talking about me because it shows Im doing well. But Ill be looking to stay in the new year and build on my performances and goal tally." Don't miss today's South London Press for the full story.

Sadly, it's not so much what the players are worth. Other clubs, if they're interested in our players, will test the club's resolve with paltry bids.

The only situation where we'd get the player's worth or more would be if they're tied up in a contract and we didn't have to sell.

It would be sad to see him go for less than his worth, but that's football, some you win, some you lose. And of course, we got him on the cheap in the first place because Charlton couldn't afford to keep him.

I believe both Clapham Grand and Sandown Eagle have stated that this is not the case. I have also been told that there were no bids for Moses Scannell and Clyne in the Summer. Interest shown but no concrete bids (except a possible half offer from Everton for Moses at a very very low price indeed (under £1m)). I do not recall any mention of bids for any of the other players but I suppose there may have been if you can say that there were.
