Nominate your best and worst away team support to "grace" us at Selhurst.
Best - Blackburn circa 88-89 (NB NOT playoff final), not great numbers but a constant barrage of "Yellow Army" which seemed to last the entire 90 mins.
Worst - Tottenham in our last Premiership campaign - so many fans - so little noise.

From my entire time there (the last two years) the best was Sunderland. Loud and happy without being arrogant they applauded the home fans and, outside the ground, were generally pleasant people.
The worst were Charlton. Big crowd (smaller than Sunderland) full of glory hunters and booing Jim at half-time. I'm starting to understand how anti-addick feels.

Not because Dai is from Swansea, but certainly one of the best I can recall was from Cardiff in the seventies, when the Whitehorse had the wall. They seemed to fill it and were singing 'Land of our Fathers' for ages.
There have been so many examples of pathetic away support, often when playing the so called 'big' teams, Man U, Everton, etc.

I seem to remember Cardiff always bringing a large support to Selhurst,in the game I think you are referring to I was in the Whitehorse behind the wall and there was a man who looked like giant haystacks walking up and down all match draped in the Welsh flag.

The reason the so called 'big clubs' bring so many yet make so little noise is because the majority of their support is made up of kids and glory hunters who don't get to see their team anywhere else.
Everton and Tottenham have always been really bad.
I think Portsmouth have always put on a good show for themselves. (Will someone shoot that woman with the bell though!!!!)

Tut tut MoK. That woman with the bell is in fact a bloke who has changed his name by deed poll to John Portsmouth Football Club Westwood. Quite a character when you see him close up as he has Portsmouth tattoos (plural!) ON HIS FACE!
As for worst support, Oxford in August 1998 were pretty appalling as were Blackburn back in 1994 when they were heading for the title. They brought an OK amount but for a team going for the title it was terrible.
Millwall are usually quite impressive in terms of numbers but there are too many scumbags in their crowd to earn any respect.

Pompey, Sunderland & Man City always bring a lot down so they get my vote & as for worst away support the manc scummers in 89, @ our first home game (midweek) bought around 1,200 & yet when they needed to win to get the title
in around 94 they had around 15,000!! glory-hunting w*****s one & all(see Chelsea as well for the Coke Cup & the Sky game 2 weeks later!!around 94 as well??)
Other bad away supports would be Everton,Sheff Wed or Coventry in most years Wimbledon any year or Carlisle in around 83/4? when they bought 3 fans down & Palace let them go into the Arthur Wait as it was raining!!

I think they are transfers/temp tattoos.
He goes every Portsmouth game and at least every England home game.
Portsmouth always travel well, and not only to local games. I recall Leeds in the Cup, when Nigel returned sang for pretty much the entire game and half time!! Man City and Wolves always bring a load as well. Take your pick for bad support, normally clubs who think they're big but are not. ie Fulham, Tottenham, Everton etc
Often it is when a team brings a big support that their atmostphere is sh!t. Obviously there are lots of examples of big away glory supports making no noise. man utd in 98' brought loads but were outsung. Arsenal in the league cup replay that same season were so quiet. Charlton and Man City were both so poor last year despite their big followings. It's strange but when both these two clubs had brought less fans their atmostpheres had been better.
Obviously teams like Swindon, Port Vale and Tranmere have brought tiny supports but I'm not so keen to knock them for that. I was getting the train back to Stoke after the Vale match last season and after speaking to some of their fans on the train I have to say I respect them for their loyalty. Other cr@p supports include QPR, Fulham and Everton. Oh and before I forget Sheff utd who were drinking with us in the Cherries after last seasons game and a Sheff Utd fan from Wallington decided to tell us that they wanted us to go bust.
As for good away fans Sunderland in 98-99 were good fans, we went drinking with them after the game which was excellant. Also does anyone remember in 93-94 when Southend Utd who were doing well at the time brought loads to Selhurst for a midweek match, now that's good supporters. Also Pompey who despite not being my favourite team were still in voice at 0-4 down last year, it reminded me of some of the Palace away days with Coppell, as Alan Ball that day came back out to appauld them after the game.

Best = Sunderland
Worst = Barnsley
Thought Man City were good when they wished us well before our Cup Final against Man U (no surprises there). Sunderland and Newcastle have also been good. As for worst, I have to agree with Men at Work. Charlton fans were an absolute disgrace when they tried to drown out the appeal on which the very future of CPFC might depend. Other fans let the appeal be heard.
Maybe Man City fans were good in 90' but after last seasons game they were all slagging Coppell which was just not on. I travelled home with loads of them and I tell you City fans also have that arrogance that so many big club fans have, especially those of failing or at least underachieving big clubs. We were apparently lucky to get a point at Selhurst last season but from where I was sitting we should of won the game easily.

Sunderland have always have had a good travelling support, even when they were crap. Was very impressed by them when we played them on Boxing day in the pissing rain. Always had a soft for them since I lived up there.
Worse support Barnsley when we won the title, they had about a grand total of about 10 fans in the seats.
I remember the Leeds match in the cup when their fans sang for the duration of halftime. I had a freind in with them who said they sang that song at every game that season but he couldn't work out the words!!
I agree with Sunderland as the best, always a large noisy following.

Before I forget, Wimbledons support is always piss poor.

Birmingham's home support last season was impressive in numbers but very quiet. Notts Forest at the City Ground was pathetic, QPR not much better.
Colchester had quite a vocal following for the Worthingtons.

Last season, would say Forest and Fulham worst at Selhurst. Portsmouth best.
Didn't do many away games, but would probably pick above again, with addition of QPR for
worst.
From the 'good old days' has to be Brighton.
Always top atmosphere.
(i missed the Sunderland game from 2 years ago so cannot comment)
I agree with all of the postings here. Should also mention Stockport last season whose very small following got right behind their team and, I felt, played a significant part in them coming back from three-down.
The worst? Charlton Ð I don't know why they bother coming, especially when they reckon they hate us. Charlton Pathetic is very apt indeed.
We have a special relationship with Liverpool Ð the more they outclass us on the pitch, the more we outclass them with our support.
Bottom of the Supporters League though are Moan United. They have no sense of humour, no wit and no passion. From the chairman down to the tiniest fan, they are club without a soul.
Portsmouth Season before last were impressive, when they wouldn't stop singing or leave the ground till Alan Ball pleaded with them to quit half an hour after the ground had emptied. People were sticking their heads out of the Stephensons bar and kept coming back saying "yup they're still there"

Grimsby brought 50 odd fans when they came down in 95-96. Cant remember them singing, not suprised though we were 5-0 up in the first half!

One of the best away games last season and come to think about it the season before was Norwich. Non stop singing.

Ok so what about travelling to away matches.
the FA Cup match @ Sunderland when Big Mal was in charge was brilliant, even though i was one of those that arrived at half time.
As for the Wombles, only a few in number but made a hellva noise for all 90 mins away at West Am
