View Full Version : The Worst Palace Team ever

I saw the thread about the best team ever, but once you pick Martyn, Sansom, Wright and Brigh you can perm any other half decent players from the last twenty years, so I thought it might be more interesting to pick the worst team. God knows we have had some to choose from!

Here's mine:-

Suckling; Patterson, Ismael, Andersen, Ansalem; Brolin, Zohar, Del Rio, Turner; Padavano, Taylor.

I know that Brolin played up front, bt I had to include him and the front two picked themselves.

I saw on another thread that someone thinks we should bring Patterson back, but I cannot remember any other player who could pass so badly (except perhaps Austin under Venables!). I know he thumped Roy Keane but that was not enough to redeem him.

Kevin Miller almost made it for one performance.

Manager? It probably has to be Attilio Lombardo.

I thought Perry Suckling was OK. Remember the play off final against Blackburn, we were winning 3-0 with minutes left, and Garner smashed one towards the top corner. Had it gone in we would've had penalties, but Perry made a fantastic save. He never recovered from the 9-0, and the press said he wouldn't the day after it, even though I can't remember any of them being his fault.

I thought someone like Chris Day was far worse.

How can you say Chris Day in front of Paul BArron Chocky? As for Perry he was a good kepper, who got destroyed by the press for the 9-0 game. As for worst players, surely the team picks itself from the early mid eighties? Worse manager, surely has to be the devil himself Alan Mullery?

Lee Sinott would certainly be in there, he looked half decent when he later played against us for Huddersfield but wasn't he awful in a Palace shirt! Some of our goalkeepers have also to be mentioned. Do you remember Wilmott throwing the ball into the Palace net against Southampton in 94-95 at the dell. Or last season Munton's laughable display at Forest.

Surely you can not forget the great Brian Sparrow?

Big Fella, Terry Boyle was around for a fair while yet still copped a place in your worst ever?

My mate used to work at the same cab office as David Price and he told him he still couldn't understand why he was booed when his name was read out.

Take a wild guess David.

Personally, I thought O'Doherty and David Giles were both OK.

What about Kevin Muscat? I'm surprised no-one's mentioned him. Not only useless but a complete psychotic.

3 Terry Fenwick
4 David Price
5 Leif Anderson
6 Jeff Hopkins
7 Nicky Chatterton
8 Itzak Zohar

11 Andy Higginbottom

George Wood
Billy Hughes
David Amsalam

Muscat was OK in Divison 1, but useless in the premiership.

From earlier days, what about Per Bartram, Borge Thorup, Alan Pinkney, Sam Goodwin. Gwyn Evans? John Cartwright was a memorably bad player, and was nicknamed Carthorse.

Have we ever had a decent Scandanavian, apart from Herman?

I agree about Mark Dennis, he really used to play up to the Arthur Waite enclosure, and you couldn't knock him for passion.
By the way, what about poor old Philis Barber. He probably wasn't the worst i've seen but he got treated real mean !

Chris of Beckenham
20-07-2000, 04:05 AM
How could you put Mark Dennis in this line up ,he was one of the most entertaining players in the last ten years, and he could bring the ball down the left better than most. Paul Mortimer is consistently the worst player of recent years (and he was at one point the highest paid)

Big Fella
20-07-2000, 04:07 AM
Just because Terry Boyle was around for a while doesn't mean he was any good. Granted, I would have put John Lacy in his place, but he had already been included previously. Let's be honest, we've seen so much crap over the years, it's hard to remember them all (how could I forget Rhys Wilmot !)

Fenwick may understandably have upset us all significantly in the years since, but one of the worst playing 11? I seriously think not!

I have submitted my all time worst team of REGULARS. To be eligible for this team of superheroes, they had to have made at least 25 apps, so they could be judged over a good period of time. Too many people submit a team where a player has only made a handful of appearences, this seems very unfair and unjust as the player has not been given the time to make his mark. To this end, I have had to leave out such wonderfully gifted players as Galliers, Ali Brown, Per Bartram,Rudi Hedman, Ron Newman and that fat pig Veggie himself.
The only problem position was goalkeeper, as in all my time supporting them, they have not had a really terrible custdodian. In the end the Pieman gets the nod because:
a) he went on strike
b) he turned in the worst performance I have ever seen from a Palace keeper at QPR
c) he was so fat!!!!!!!!!!
So here is my list of superheroes:

Kevin MILLER

Brian BASON
Terry FENWICK
Jeff HOPKINS
John LACY

Jim SCOTT
David PRICE
Glen PENNYFATHER
Alan PINKNEY

Tommy LANGLEY
Andy McCULLOCH

Res: Paul BARRON, Dean AUSTIN, Lief ANDERSON,
Lee SINNOTT, Dennis UPHILL,
Mike FLANAGAN

Joint Managers: Alan MULLERY & Terry VEGGIES
2nd coming

Ass Manager : Alan SMITH

I can't believe that anyone hasn't mentioned MICK HILL (we got him from Ipswich). This breathtaking No 9 used to regularly miss open goals with his left or right foot from two yards out. His heading ability was even more devastating. Threepennybit head would connect with a header only to hit the left or right corner flags. One wednesday night he scored a goal with a volley from 30 yards out, standing in the middle of the new stand as the ball hit the back of the net, we were drawn into a state of shock(bit like Hoppy's goal in the play-off) Whatever happened to Mick Hill or the original Arthur Waite halfline boys? Rob, Mole, Colin, Glen, Keith and the rest - anyone remember? I used to be one of the original dinosaurs. Anyone still around?

A player that has been surprisingly left our is Doris Hinshelwood. not a striker I know, but the only player who could put the ball into touch for a throw when shhoting from inside the penalty area.

Worst team ever?

The one that played at Crawley on Saturday?

Jack Regan
24-07-2000, 06:34 PM
I'm in agreement that Mick Hill was absolute rubbish. He was signed by Malcolm Allison on transfer deadline day (one season in the mid-1970's) and Palace chartered a helicopter at a cost of £650 to get his registration papers to the FA on time.

What an utter waste of time and money.

I tend to agree that any one of Mullery's teams of the early 80's must be it. But the worst players who would make up the team would include:

John Lacy (completely hopeless)
Gary Stebbing ( hated possession)
Steve Ketteridge (headless chicken)
Trevor Aylott
David Fry (we've had some good goalies and some of the worst)
Tommy Langley (saw him score once)
(andy McCullough, but that gives me three strikers)
Andy Higginbottom

I could probably name more but they're much of a muchness. We should add:

Rudi Hedman (great signing from the former chairman there)
David Amsalem (TV good judge of a player)

I could never understand all the hype about Gerry Murphy, but he wasn't quite bad enough to make a worst team

Sorry chaps but it now almost certainly has to be:
Digby, Smith, Fullarton, Fan, Austin, Carlisle, Gray, Mullins,
Thompson, Black, Hunt.
Oh and Brolin and Padovona as subs

Any worst palace team must include Tony Gale. He only played a few times but boy did we concede goals.

It is too bad to see that Steve Galloway is in one of those list´s. He has been a great goalscorer, over 100 goals, for my favourite club here in sweden, Umeċ FC. And a loyal player for the club, many people say´s that he is Umeċ FC. Everybody in Sweden who likes football know who he is. Steve Galloway still going strong.
