View Full Version : Mr Aylott
Found a load of old programmes in the loft at my mums house last night (gave them to my nephew who I'm training up - he cried the other day when his mum tried to make him wear a Manure tee-shirt). One from 1984 used to list the team with a desription underneath:
Trevor Aylott
Big target man who's not having a lot of luck in front of goal this season.

Every now and again, thoughts of Trevor Aylott pop into my head. I, and many others, have frequently derided poor Trev on these boards, so I thought I would start a thread for people to reminisce and perhaps even remember some good things he did. I saw that someone had already started one off, so here goes....
I will say this - for all his limitations, Big Trev was a wholehearted performer, built like a brick shit house, and I'm sure I remember him scoring a really good header in the Full Members Cup (possibly against Chelsea at the Sainsbury's end?). And for some reason, I remember him in a game away to Oxford once. Pretty sure we got hammered 5-0 when they had Houghton, Aldridge, Kevin Brock, Trevor Hebberd etc. They were a good team. Maybe they made Trev look silly, I can't remember why it would stick in my head.
So, over to you for your favourite memories of big Trev.
My best memory of him and why I have continued to support him, was after he left Palace and joined Bournemouth. He came to SP with his new club and he looked heavier than ever and wore a headband(which looks somewhat silly). For the whole game he was being given a hard time and at one point he was by the AW touchline waiting for a throw in to be taken and someone shouted at him with a funny(if you are a Palace fan) comment. He heard it and laughed...no throwing a strut or anything, he took it in his stride and laughed.

Yeah I seem to remember a Jim Cannon quote maybe from that game where he said "they're giving you a hard time today, Trev" to which he replied "nothing like they did when I played for them"!

Of course. It rang around the terraces of SP long after big Trev departed for 'pastures' new.
Best memory, a towering header against Oxford in a midweek 1-0 at fortress Selhurst. They were top of the league and we were in dire straits. A good result in front of a 10k crowd, which was massive that year and sent me into school happy the next day.
Incidentally, I just saw Cesc Fabregas drop dead, which makes me miss whole hearted players like Trev.

I was at the Oxford game, it was a great result at the time as they were a great side! Great goal from Aylott only one I really remember.
Also a picture of him signing, with Sparrow & Horne the reserve goalkeeper.
Holding his legs like a wheelbarrow. Trev promised to score a Barrow load of goals..

That was against Brighton in a 3-1 defeat. He nearly slid through the fence at the Whitehorse End.

Ah yes was there for that one! Think Oxford were as good as up and big Trev nutted one in after a 'blistering' run up the middle of the pitch. Remember being very satisfied and popping in the Lion after the game - bloke behind the bar found it hard to believe we had, a. won and b. Aylott had scored!

The main thing that sticks in my mind after that game was that we nearly drowned as it pissed down all match - that and the fact that the ground was about a million miles form the station and we decided to walk it

So in summary, you have a vague recollection of him scoring in a meanless competition, and, as a striker, playing really well in a game where we got slaughtered and managed to score nil. If i did not know better, I would think you were being ironic.

I dunno, people on here idolise Alan Lee and he wasn't that much better at times. ;)

Hence the need for this thread. My reminiscence of Oxford away was clearly a red herring, and I've been reminded of the Oxford home victory which was probably why I had the Aylott/Oxford link in my mind. It was quite a result, that one.
And how dare you call the Full Members Cup (latterly to become the ZDS Cup) a 'meaningless competitition'? For shame, OPS!

Aylott: 61 apps (inc. subs), 14 goals.
Lee: 71 apps (inc. subs), 13 goals.

The 5-0 defeat to Oxford was my first outside London away game. I think Aylott had our one significant effort on goal: their keeper made a great save. The 1-0 victory was the return match in the same season, so having been at the 5-0 made it all the sweeter.

And people now moan about Martin and Murray. I was brought up watching turd such as McCulloch, a player so slow it seemed he moved in instalments. If it wasnt for players like Mabbutt (when he was fit) and a fairly mean defence, we would have been relegated at least once in those godawful Mullery years.

I never thought Ian Edwards was that bad and his scoring record is respectable compared to the other 3.
Those 3 plus Big Trev and also the prolific Ally Brown - God, we were spoiled for choice of Donkeys in that period:)
What is amazing about big Trev is that Brighty cost half the price.

Trev scored the winner the first time I went to Hull. I think.
My memory goes back to Barnsley at home 85/86 season when we finished 5th after years in the doldrums. 1-0 win, Kevin Taylor. Big Trev 'nearly' scored with a point blank header in front of the Holmesdale, if memory serves he somehow managed to hit the post from about 5 yards out. One of those 'stooping headers' when you end up on your knees. Happy days!

Always felt sorry for him.He was isolated up front,no support,if he won a header which he did most times there was nobody in sight. Most of the time he only had grass to pass to.
We appear to be converting Murray into a modern day version!

I think I have remembered this correctly:
We loaned him to Barnsley for a few games one season, and he failed to score in any of them. We played Barnsley at Oakwell in his first game back, and he came off the bench to score for us in a 3-2 victory.

The backheel was up the other end. Donkey's do tend to like to kick out behind them so maybe he had worked out what he needed to late on in his career :D
Anyway, he was also an ex Chelsea and Millwall ****. I believe Moverman wrote an interesting story about him in the 2005 Eagle Eye.

Remember a home game v Bournemouth somewhere in between probably 87-89 ? When Aylott came back to play against us. Me and some others brought some carrots to throw at him from the Arthur standing enclosure. Not sure if he even played but do remember throwing one such carrot and it hitting the linesman in the back of the neck. Remember Ginger and some other old bill entering the terrace to 'have a word' and me crawling along the floor like a fool to escape him. Stood at the stainsburys end of the Arthur for the rest of the game all pleased with myself. Only for him to remember this incident whilst I was walking from Watford Junction a few weeks letter for the Phil Barber 1-0 Easter Friday game with all the inflatables. Threatened to ban me for the rest of the season but still let me go. Great days.

12 years for a response to the opening post (like waiting for an Aylott goal) but this little gem was worth the wait.
