Where else to turn when things gone wrong but the BBS ... access to the web via a router on a one year old PC has been working fine until the last week. System crashes and when I try to re-connect there’s a message telling me that the router isn’t working.

The PC ( a desk top) and router are near to the telephone socket, there’s nothing to interfere with the signal ... is there any way of finding out if the router’s working (seems daft to buy another router)?

Should have added that it works some of the time, i.e. now

I think Dave meant, is there a problem with yr wireless settings.

But usually the routers have various lights on the front to tell you what they are doing, do you have anything like this? What make is yr router?

When yr "router" is crashing what are your lights doing? can you still connect to it via its settings page (sometimes its http://192.168.0.1/start.htm )

If not do you have a network cable to connect wired to it.

Who is yr provider, any chance they've been having outages & its its there service rather than yr router? (Sky has been down this week I understand)

Thanks. My mistake, yes it is wireless, router is a D-Link.

Lights stay on but I've tried using the cable vis the ethernet connection, no joy.

ISP is Greenbee who haven't had an outages (well, I had to believe them) and they claim BT is not doing any work in the area.

What is puzzling is that it worked fine for nearly a year, now the service is erratic, sometimes the speed is no better than dial-up.

Anything else changed recently, like updated virus/firewall software?

What do the speed test sites say, does it appear that you're speed has dropped but the speed tests say otherwise, so that could be a computer or router problem.

The router itself usually tells you what the speed is, via http://192.168.0.1/ (http://192.168.0.1/)

These things are usually a process of elimination. Obviously the router is plugged into yr telephone socket, via a cable, has that got damaged?

Are all you micro filters in place on other sockets?

Have you been to the D Link site to check for software updates, as yr router is a yr old? http://www.dlink.co.uk/cs/Satellite?c=Page&childpagename=DLinkEurope-GB%2FDLTechNews&cid=1197318962234&p=1197318962234&pagename=DLinkEurope-GB%2FDLWrapper

just some thoughts

No probs, at the end of the day it could actually be yr router but best to check other issues rather than drop some cash & it isn't.

Spot on about checking other issues - and relying on the PC to tell you what it thinks is wrong as all along it kept pointing to a router/connectivity problem.

Your mention of updated virus/firewall software suggested a look at everything since the connection slowed down ... 2 days later, bingo. A Vista update didn't take place; updated it this morning and - touch wood - everything is working normally.

Thanks again.
