"The black players at this club lend the side a lot of skill and
flair, but
you also need white players in there to balance things up and give the
team
some brains and some common sense."
(Crystal Palace chairman Ron Noades, speaking in 1991)."
Looks like he gave Wright the perfect excuse to leave then.

I would not have been surprised if everyone had wanted to quit, the comments as quoted above are equally insulting!

I believe Noades said what he actually believed - the programme was about black footballers - and because Palace had more Black players on their books/in the first team than any other premiership side at the time, he perhaps thought he was bomb proofed against any bad reaction. I do not think Noades has ever been one to exercise caution when asked to provide his opinions, and enjoys the confrontation that often follows. On this particular occasion he had no control over the outcome.
Alan Smith has always maintained that off the pitch contoversy has always affected oin the pitch performance, and I am sure these stupid comments and the controversy that followed contributed greatly to our relegation that season.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't most of our best players at that time, (Early 90s) black anyway?

Hugh Cheddyk said the following in regards to Ron Noades' comments on black players:
Alan Smith has always maintained that off the pitch contoversy has always affected oin the pitch performance, and I am sure these stupid comments and the controversy that followed contributed greatly to our relegation that season.
We were actually relegated the following year. However the team effectively broke up during the 1991/92 season so undoubtedly the quotes were highly significant in the break up of the team.

During ones life, one comes across many different nationalities and races and you base your opinions on your dealings with them, but if you consider yourself a good businessman/person, you keep most of your opinions to yourself!
The Aussie long jumper has really put himself and the people of Aussie in a bad light, with his comments about the Black Athletes. Life is hard enough without these type of statements. When will we realise that being White does not mean we are better than anyone else.

Noades complained to the soccer saturday team this week because they lost at home to bristol rovers 6-2. He accused the sky 'pundits' of writing them off without knowing the facts but the best part was when he ridiculed Marsh for knowing nothing of teams outside the premiership. He got shot to pieces in sky style (ie, not there to defend himself), they took the p*ss a bit. Funnily enough, I thought he was right, especially about Marsh.
I would defend the presenter bloke though, he's not a glory hunter, he supports Hartlepool.

As someone who is perceived to be in the pro-Noades camp (and I certainly wanted Noades more than Lim), let me say that I find the quote highly offensive. If he did say that, he certainly deserved the flack which resulted.
I am sure that Noades will say that he was mis-quoted, or that he did not intend to say that, but there is never any excuse for racism, and with gifted and intelligent players such as Wright and Bright at the Club at the time it was a truly awful misjudgement (and a PR disaster) by our former manager.
