this is not to be memories of particular this follows on from the board banging to 'glad all over' but i am looking for things that used to happen at games that don't anymore. or memories of the ground.
to kick things off
that board that used to used to be under the floodlights on the holmesdale that was painted the palace sash colours.
and that cool VW Beetle that used to trundle round the ground pre-kick.
that was wicked

Mid Eighties when the 'Arthur' was the place to stand!
Boy did we used to make some noise .. especially when we got a crowd of 8000+.
Yes remember when 8k was considered a reasonable gate ?

yes, was looking at my '85-'86 Rothmans the other day and thinking about exactly that.
10,000 was a real bonanza (normally Portsmouth or Brighton).
I remember standing in the A Wait and the Holmesdale and we all used to sit down at Half Time!!

I used to stand there, great times especially in the play off final against Blackburn. My fondest memories were of John Burridge's warm up routines, best pre match entertainment you could get.

Palace Dollies. I always wanted to be one and by the time I was old enough, they didn't have them anymore.
The old supporters club.
Rosettes with Bobby Tambling's picture on.
John Burridge's pre-match warm-ups.
Ah, halcyon days.......

Sorry chums but you've all missed the real biggy - silk scarves ! Anyone recall them ? I remember when we used to play in Claret and Blue and the club shop sold a two-tone blue (flecked with claret) one with the club crest (the Crystal Palace exhibition centre logo in those days, no Eagle in sight) in claret all over it. 1 pound 50 ! Brilliant scarf. The practice was to knot them round the belt tag on your jeans or round your wrist them days. Like a loon I gave the 2 I had to one of the first girlfriends I had to signify our eternal and undying love. Wonder where she/they is/are now ? When you look at some of the pap that is sold in the name of soccer these days the old silk scarf was a pure diamond. Bring 'em back Palace !

Sorry, and another fing ! I used to really enjoy that sports shop on the Whitehorse Lane between the ground and Thornton Heath end of the street (on the opposite side from the Ground in the first row of shops). It's gone now but they used to sell some great CP stuff that you couldn't get in the club shop (alternate scarves, badges, stickers etc) and often the odd "dodgy" kit (eg CP naming or crest on items but in item colours that had never seen the light of day on a pitch when CP were playing !). Great stuff, for years their merchandise was way better than the club shop stuff ! Spose a dodgy market would be the answer today (assuming they'd bother to sell past MU and Chelsea stuff).

Wooden rattles. How did we manage to use them
standing in crowds of 30,000 plus? I never heard of one being used as an offensive weapon, perhaps I was too young to hear about it! black and white painted ones were the ones to have, plain wooden if that is all you could afford.
The old lady peanut vendor at the Holmesdale end. Used to know her name.

The bogs at the back of the Holmesdale in the 60's and 70's - at half time there was a rush UP the terrace, then DOWN the mud/loose bricks (I kid you not) at the back to hit the traps. Real fun on a wet day. Those too late just peed on the stadium wall. And the "confectionary huts" at the top of the Holmesdale - buy a bovril and you could still see the game on tiptoes. Also the division of the Holmesdale when it was standing on the Norwood Junction side of the ground with away fans a mere 10 yards away in the penned off triangle with just a thin blue line separating. Made for some interesting "discussions" bewteen fans at times !

The hot dog stand at the back of the Holmesdale. The Burgers and dogs were crap, but the mustard was so hot it was better for clearing blocked noses than Vicks,Fishermans friends put together.

Lakeside Glazier,
That Sports shop was called "Goalpost".
How about low prices. My 1st season ticket (1974-5) was £6-50 for the whole season to stand up in the Arthur Wait. With raging 1970's inflation it jumped to £8-50 in the following season.
I used to travel on the football train specials in the mid 1970's and the team would often get the train back with us, have a meal and then walk up & down talking to the fans.
I used to play football in at the back of the Old Stand and some of the players (like Venables) would often stop for a chat. This would be about 1975.
