Can someone educate me please? When did Palace fans adopt Glad All Over as their own? Dave Clark Five were from the Tottenham area?

Let's keep this a Melbourne discussion shall we ?!?!? My take is that the CP DJ (John Henty ?) first played this mid/late 60's to start with I think. Those days the ground area was standing around the pitch and all the young(er) kids got put at the front next to the advertising boards (so they could see) whilst their dads stayed further back. When the "and I'm feeling..." bit came on, the kids hit the boards in time to the 2 drum beats that came next (yes, me too). As far as I could see this stuck and was popular at every home match, so Henty then decided to play it as CP took to the field to get the fans whipped up. I'm not sure that it was ever adopted officially by CP, merely it became a "defacto standard" due to everyone joining in with the chorus drumbeats ! Better than "Simply the Best" anyway.....

Lakeside is right! I was around then and remember the board banging by the kids at the front of the terraces. It just seemed to fit with the spirit of Palace as it was then and stood out from all the other pop records current at that time. What surprises me is that it has stood the test of time, and has become an enduring anthem at Selhurst Park.

please don't reminiss (is that how you spell it) too much lads. it makes me all sentimental even though i am a tad too young to remember those halycon board banging days.
is there any way we can encourage today's youth to reignite the passion??
firstly i suppose we will have to get the tannoy turned down a bit.

As an apprentice board-banger circa 69-73 I can confirm the passion which greeted DC5. However this was only matched the glee we small lads derived from throwing peanut shells at opposition goalies.

On the subject of peanuts does anyone recall the fearsome old lady (Italian I think) that used to wander the packed crowds of the Holmesdale before and during matches selling Percy Daltons nuts from a huge white bag ? Woe betide you if you were cheeky to her or didn't have the right change ! I was more scared of her than of any invading opposition fans trying to "take" our end !

Yes Lakeside I remember her although I don't think she moved far from the Holmesdale turnstiles and she would give you a gob full if you were rude to her. As for the peanuts we used to pick out bald blokes to flick the shells at. Everyone is right on Glad all over. But does anyone remember Billy Prestons "Thats the way God planned it" at the of of games in the 70's

I remember those crowds, often fifty thousand plus, first season in the then first division, against ManU and Chelsea. Amazing atmosphere, the like of which we will never see again, at least not until we get the new Jordan stadium for our Premiership crowds.

Hate to ruin the memories, but wasn't 1979 v Burnley the only 50,000+ crowd?

Mrs Minchella - the peanut seller!
I was another boardbanger/shellflicker - I remember Bob Wilson swearing at us once!!
Christ it seems most of the BBS of that gae used to stand down the front of the Holmesdale. I wonder if in 25 years time people will reminiss about Blocks A & B, the Back Passage Boys and how the catering staff couldn't speak English?

No but I remember standing next to a bloke on the Holmesdale who took grat delight every time Palace got beat or even if the opposition scored. I assume he was a Palace supporter he was there most games.

Board Banger, and Rattle rattler, and in case we couldn't get to the front my grandad would take along a stool for me to stand on.
(no, a wooden stool!)
It's funny how certain songs can remind you of somewhere, a certain time, a romance etc.
With Glad All Over I can still feel the excitement I had as a young kid going to Palace.
Whenever I hear 'We are the Champions' by Queen it immediately takes me back to a home game V Spurs when a massive fight broke out on the Holmesdale (1980'ish?)
'Message in a Bottle' takes me back to an away trip to Everton (1981'ish?) We lost 4-0 but were 'Still the Top Team in London..'

WOW!!! I have also had some amazing flashbacks on reading these posts!!! I have just returned to Palace after a 21 year absence (followed from afar) and my young son escorts me to games now. I was just telling him about the board bangers and peanut throwing last week. Seeing this post I just had to thank you all for sharing the memories - I was in tears of laughter remembering the gruesome old girl on the Holmesdale and the thought of Bob Wilson swearing at the peanut shells!!!
I remember sitting on the grassy banks with a bag of peanuts whilst watching a game - and then shuddering at the mess I had left as I got up to leave....the biggest pile of shells you can imagine! I kept turning back as I walked away with feelings of guilt!
Its great to be back - the ground looks real sharp now - keep your posts coming here....this is a great forum.
