With refs, assistants & 4th officials miced up to each other does anyone think it would be a good idea to broadcast the feed like they do in rugby union?
I think it would clear up some confusion as to why certain decisions have been made and what the ref was thinking when he's booked certain players etc.
Clearly there are some potential pitfalls such as the way players speak to refs and the fact that we'd probably find out that certain refs don't really know why they've made certain decisions, but I would have thought it would be worth a trial run.
Thoughts?

Non-starter, as much as it would be great IMO.

Wouldn't happen because of the bad language used constantly by footballers. In rugby, if you swear at the ref, you are sin binned for 10 minutes.

I'm pretty sure they tried it once, but all you could hear was swearing!

Rugby players swear far less on the pitch so it works out to have rugby refs on the microphone. Footballers are complete scumbags and every match shown live would have to be on delay to give Sky, etc time to bleep out every time Rooney calls the ref a c*nt.

Was wondering if you can pick up the frequencies. Presumably you'd have to be fairly close. I doubt it's encrypted.

People here thought it would be a good idea in the AFL (Aussie Rules Football) so they now "mic up" the umpires. Most people now want the mics turned off because it is extremely annoying having to listen to their whiny voices all the time.

It might be an idea just to hear some of the crap referees have to put up with game after game. If the F.A. would only enforce the Respect for refs that they keep blabbing about, it wouldn't be necessary at all, but there is no chance of that with people like Ferguson and Andy Gray about.
Officials do sometimes make mistakes, of course they do, that is just tough. Players make mistakes too, loads of them, I don't hear people calling to them to explain themselves or to apologise for the millions it may have cost the club.
How about giving the players microphones? Then when they shout and scream about throw-ins or offsides and are proved wrong, let them explain themselves.
Fat chance. And people wonder why there is a shortage of refs at grass-roots. Sheesh.

wasn't it tried at an Arse match years ago?
seem to remember Tony Adams had a confrontation with the ref and the BBC used up a whole years allocation of 'beeeps' in just that one 'conversation'
Lets face it, even if the ref/player confrontations were broadcast you wouldnt hear much other than 'beep beep you beeping beep beep' !!

Main difference is that players, in general amke mistakes on the pitch and are punished accordingly, either in play or by the ref. They more often than not admit their mistakes afterwards as well
Refs on the other hand almost never admit they've made a mistake.
Even when there is compelling evidence to prove they were wrong their is no apology, no admission or retraction
Just look at some of the apalling decisions Dermot Gallagher has called on Palace, yet not once has he ever admitted he was wrong
Even the most blatant of all (Leeds) failed to bring forth an apology or admission
At WBA he sent off Sorondo (wrongly) and then refused to admit he was wrong and rescind the desion

Can't see what it would add to the game, apart from giving some people the opportunity to have more self-righteous digs at players and their bad language.

It's bad enough watching the dreadful standard of refereeing that blights the game today, to hear their pathetic reasoning behind the decisions would add insult to injury.

Rushes :p I remember the ref being wired up at Millwall v Arsenal with Tony Adams dishing a few comments out.Bad move i think,it would eventually lead to players having to curb their passion and become mutes after viewer complaints,i'd rather hear the ref explain himself after the game.

absolutely, get the ref in after the game show him the contentious decisions and ask him to explain why he did or didnt make the correct call, after all, he could well be proved correct in many of them....they want respect then they really have to improve their standards. Living in France Ive only seen a couple of games but in both the referees have been little short of appalling, and the games Ive seen on TV they have been equally useless. They always seem to see penalties in the last minute for Moan U or Chelsea, and players from both those teams almost have to murder the opposition players to get even a yellow card whereas a Palace player even looks at an opponent wrongly hes in the book kas quick as a flash
