Interesting that Smithy's opted for the lower league version of James Beattie. Howard is best described as the English Jeroen Boere (remember him???), I always panic when I see a player has an "awkward" style of play, it usually means he's a clumsy ox.

Perhaps he's going to play the Jari Litmanen role in a new Ajax style 'total football' experiment. Or perhaps we've just signed another Andy Preece.
Does anyone know anything about him apart from the awkward tag?

Cobblers gaffer Kevin Wilson said last week he's good enough for the Prem, so it's a surprise he's being sold. He's absolutely huge, so he'll win a lot in the air. It's clear Smith wants a target man, I'll be interested in the final price.

Taken from Northampton's contribtion to the From the terraces website .............An ambulance was rushed to Sixfields on Saturday after Kevin Wilson was reported as saying Steve Howard could one day play in the Premiership. He was released from the General with a doctor’s warning to keep him under observation, and to rush him back if any more bizarre comments are made.
FTT has repeatedly stuck up for Howard over the past year as he suffered large amounts of abuse from the crowd. This season he has shown what he can do, recently keeping Marco Gabbiadini out of the side and winning over the crowd. However, despite his recent good form, we think saying he could be a future Premiership player is going a bit too far!
Steve would be an excellent division 3 striker and is proving he can hold his own in division 2, but at a higher level his game would be found out. Kevin Wilson was quoted as saying, “In the Premiership there aren't too many big strikers. If Steve keeps working hard, someone might take a fancy to him.” But there’s a reason why there aren’t too many big strikers in the Premiership, the game at that level has evolved and the old “take aim and fire” up to the big man routine doesn’t work anymore. The influx of foreigners has led to a change of tactics amongst English strikers, with skill now a priority. Now apart from the odd 30-yard blockbuster, Stevie is a little short in the skill department.
FTT think Kevin’s comments are merely an attempt to get big clubs interested in Steve, in the hope of making a decent amount of money on him before any changes in the transfer system occur. Once again let me say we are not criticising Steve Howard’s ability at this level, merely giving our opinion that he is not a Premiership standard player.

Less of a surprise when you consider the fee, don't you think? I will give him a chance, and reserve judgement until he's played a few games, but I would say this, if he cost more than Tommy Black he better bloody be worth it.

Yeah, £750k is steep when you consider that was the initial fee Newcastle paid for Lua Lua.

yes but newcastle are paying £2.25m for Lua Lua so there is obviously going to be a difference in quality...

Never quite understood why we didn't get Jamie Cureton from Bristol Rovers. He's always looked quality. He went to Reading for less than Howard (I think) and has been a big hit so far. Also, as someone else pointed out, I'd have thought Forrester's the man to go for at Northampton.
Still, let's hope Mr. Howard can do the business. Expect lots of hopeful high balls into the box, and any attempts at a passing game abandoned.

Or perhaps someone to get on the end of the innumerable corners and crosses which currently are coming to nothing.
Give the bloke a chance.

Has anyone noticed the similarity of our New striker to a certain Slim Shady AKA Eminem AKA Marshall Mathers?
Or is it just me?

I remember talking to a leicester fan when Brighty was on loan to us & he said the crowd hated him & we could have him for nothing. We paid peanuts for him,put him with Wrighty & viola.Howard has the build of the striker we need, who knows?,maybe this could be the making of both him & Morrison.

Just got this from a mate who is a Cobblers fan:
"The words "old fashioned centre-forward" don't so much spring to mind, as hit it with the impact of an Exocet. Big strong lad, basically. Didn't see him in action last season, but I think he was our "Internet Player of the Year", so obviously a crowd favourite. This season he started off by playing behind our front two of Gabbiadini and Forrester - pretty adventurous formation for a newly-promoted side. Saw him score against Notts County, but I think that's his only one so far this season. He looks to me like a bog-standard Second Division 2nd-choice striker - good but not brilliant. Sure the crowd would be sad to see him go, but if we get £750,000 for him then I'd think we were doing a pretty good deal. Now if it was Forrester you were after, then I'd be worried....
Incidently, nothing on http://www.ntfc.co.uk about it"

Didn't see thi thread but started a new one with this from the cobbler's unofficial web site:
NTFCunofficial.com users took part in a vote cast last week, in which we asked you "With talk of the Premiership for Steve Howard, how much do you think he is worth?" Many supporters used their vote, and we now can display the results!
Last season, supporters got on the back of the Northampton hitman for some bad performances, but the player seemed to have turned round the boo-boys with a string of goals and all round good play.
This earnt him praise from Cobblers boss Kevin Wilson, who claimed Howard could be a Premiership player soon. Six catergories were used in the vote about the value of Steve Howard, which brought out some surprising results.
Leading the poll with 31.6 per cent said Steve Howard's value was worth £100K - £200K, which suggests that since moving to Northampton, fans feel that the price of the striker has not risen - Howard was signed from Hartlepool for a total of £120,000.
However, 26.3 per cent stated that he is in fact worth somewhere between £200K and £500K - a price that Kevin Wilson may be happy in taking as a transfer payment if the target man ever moved to another club.
A total of 15.8% thought he could be worth up to the magic well over the £500K barrier - a price whcih would see some of the Cobblers debt wiped out!
Some harsh judgements by Cobblers fans - which may have also been aided by other voters - even suggested that Howard isn't worth a penny - 13.2% had these thoughts!
7.9% said he was only worth £50k-£100k, while only 5.2% thought his value was between £1K and £50K>

He'd be used to the boo boys by now. I remember at a couple of Hartlepool matches he used to attract stick from a small group of people. Even when he scored twice they complained he should have had a hat trick. Of course, there is no similarity with Palace fans whatsoever.

I am always hopeful when we sign new players - obviously our scouts have seen something in this guy - but it is VERY worrying when more Cobblers fans think he is worth either nothing or less than £5k than those fans who think he is worth more than £500k.
I personally don't care if he scores goals - provided he manages to keep hold of the ball and lay it off to another striker he'll be doing more than our current partnerships! His arrival could be the making of Morrison.

Spoke with a Director of Northampton on Saturday night. He said the Palace interest in Howard is total rubbish. He said Palace had not made contact with Northampton and the story had originated from the Northampton Cronicle at the start of the week,, who were putting two & two together ie, Wilson saying Howard was good enough for the Premiership and Palace in need oof a big centre forward.
He did say he would be sad to see Howard go but if somebody offered £750k he would go.
It was all COBBLERS!

Cobblers dismiss Palace interest
TeamTalk
Monday, October 9, 2000
"Northampton Town have dismissed any talk about Steve Howard moving to First Division strugglers Crystal Palace for £1 million.
Reports had suggested that the former Hartlepool man was set for a move to South London after some impressive performances for the Cobblers in recent weeks. But Northampton have stepped in to pour cold water on the reports and a spokesman said that the claims were purely speculation.
Crystal Palace are believed to be ready to step up their interest in Howard, who has been an influential member of the Cobblers' squad this season."
Nice to see that Teamtalk are still reading the BBS for their Palace news.

Davies paid a lot for him I think.
If I remember correctly, he basically splashed the cash out in frustration of not being able to sign anyone at that point. Really has been a good signing for them.

Spending £1m on a 30 year old lump who'd been in the lower leagues almost all his career looked like an atrocious idea to me and when Leeds had a £500k bid for Howard turned down in the summer I was quite pleased. And....that's why Davies is earning God knows how much and I'm playing FM2007:D
has really been great for them.

Hes looked good recently. I saw him and Forrester play for Northampton away at Bristol Rovers some years ago when I went to visit my bro who was at uni in Bristol and living near Rovers ground. Howard looked a good league one (now) target man and good enough for a average Championship (now) side as a target support man. Forrester looked more talented, good, pacey striker who knew where the goal was but lacked physically and would say he was a tad better overall. Surprised Howard is doing so well especially considering hes scoring as many as his striker partner at Derby yet they are top. But then eh what do I know!

All your saying is that Howard wins more balls in the air, which is probably true.
They are both similar players though. Big, a nuisance to play against and they get the odd goal. I just don't see how getting in this lower level OAP, on a riddiculous fee, would help us.
Plus, as I said, Howard is a wanker.

Big donkey. Would MUCH prefer the out of favour Earnshaw who we wouldn't be able to get either. Howard is semi decent at our level but not the kind of forward we need. A Scowcroft who had a good season last year.
