Then the sweet 16 would go:
1)Germany over Paraguay
2)England over France (upset to make you poms happy)
3)Argentina over Denmark
4)Cameroon over Spain
5)Italy over Poland
6)Brazil over Belgium
7)Russia over Turkey
8)Portugal over Croatia
Then the quarters would go:
1)Brazil over England (twice is too much for you to hope for)
2)Italy over Germany
3)Cameroon over Portugal
4)Russia over Argentina
Then the semis would go:
1)Cameroon over Itlay (Oh my God!)
2)Brazil over Russia (they have had a friendly draw really)
Finally:
Cameroon in shock WC victory over Brazil. Ronaldo plays like blind man.
Now, what would a bookie give me for a fiver on that accumulating bet?
The only thing more shocking than Cameroon to win is Russia to get to the semis! I dare you to name a player - any player in their squad. (No googling).

Nigeria to win, Akinbyi to be top scorer and enter the legneds of World Cup folklore.
John Motson(2046), "this player must surely go alongside the world cup greats that just roll off your tongue, Puskas, Charlton, Hurst, Pele, Beckanbaer(sp), Cryuff, Maradonna, Baggio, Ronaldo, and Ade Akinbyi who famously scored 12 in World Cup 2004"

Group A:
Winners: France (No one will challenge them in the group)
Runner up: Uruguay (They sneaked past Australia to get there, same feeling about them here)
Group B:
Winners: Spain (About time they did something)
Runner up: South Africa (Strongish team, Paraguay are aweful and I think Slovenia will suffer with the big occasion)
Group C:
Winners: Brazil (As always a strong team)
Runner up: Turkey (Now becoming a reasonable team, and will roll over China and Costa Rica, struggle against Brazil though)
Group D:
Winners: Portugal (The group is far too easy for them)
Runner up: U.S.A. (I don't know why but I think they'll sneak through ahead of Poland)
Group E:
Winners: Rep of Ireland (I think they are capable of winning every group game)
Runner up: Germany (Traditional for them to get through, still strong enough to beat Cameroon and S. Arabia, will struggle against Ireland though)
Group F:
Winners: England (Will beat Sweden 1-0, Nigeria 3-0 and play a good game against Arge to sneak a 2-1 win)
Runner up: Argentina (Will destroy Sweden and Nigeria, will falter against England)
Group G:
Winners: Italy (Too strong for the group, my tip to win the tournament)
Runner up: Ecuador (As Strathclyde said, there's usually one shock, and I think this will be it, a shock win against Croatia)
Group H:
Winners: Belgium (Good in group stage, will embarress themselves in the next round)
Runner up: Russia (Only other team I thought worthy of coming through the group, might be tight with Japan though)

The reason people don't know about Russian players is that they don't play in this country, Mostovoi is always rated among the top foreign players in the Primera Liga and Russia's group is very easy. I can also see them getting past Turkey (or China or Costa Rica) in the second round. I do not see them getting any further then the quarter finals. I hope England can make it out of their ludicrously difficult group, but, I just can't see it. Perhaps if they win against Sweden, but, I can see that beeing a tense low scoring draw. I think England will do well against Argentina, but, doing well probably means another draw. The last game against Nigeria I fear will end in disaster. Would love to be proved wrong.
My Tips for the semi finals are:
Brazil, Spain, Cameroon and Argentina. It's very likely that one QF will be France against Brazil, otherwise I would have both of them in there.

No-one will get these all correct then. Every single person who guessed predicted France would win their group. No-one even had them down to come second, let alone go out of the competition in the first round.
Lots of us went for Cameroon to qualify for the second round. And Poland and Slovenia featured frequently too - and both of them are already out. The sentimental China vote has seen a few of us come a cropper too.
And we may still lose Argentina, Italy, England and Portugal who many of us nominated as group winners.

This was nearly as surprising a competition as the World Cup itself.
And here's the roll of honour:
41 entrants. 16 qualifiers to predict.
Obviously, with three of the big guns going out no-one got 16 out of 16, but every team who qualified was predicted as a second round qualifier by someone.
11 out of 41 only predicted half, or less, of the teams who qualified for the second round - that's eight teams or less.
The most surprising qualifier is Senegal who were backed by only 4 people.
The most surprising group winner is Mexico - no-one got that. Only one person predicted that South Korea would win their group (Dave Campbell) and similarly only one (g23) correctly prophesied Denmark's achievement in winning Group A.
The most predictable group winner is Spain who were correctly identified by 37 people. The most predictable qualifier is Italy who were correctly predicted by all 41, although only 3 of us had them to come second in their group.
Only 8 people picked at least one qualifier in all eight ot the groups - g23, Boris, Sunny Fan, Selhurst Eagle, Jimbo?, wookiee, Hellsbells and Al from Bromley.
Anyway, enough of the nonsense. Here's the results:

Now, if you give 3 points for a correct placing (saying Brazil would top their group, for instance) and 1 for a qualification but not from the predicted position (saying England would top their group, for instance) then it shakes down like this:

So it won't surprise you to know that Dave Campbell predicted the most teams in their correct postitions: eight - Spain, Brazil, Turkey, South Korea, Germany, Ireland, Japan and Belgium.
But there we are. We weren't very good. And it just goes to show that all those tired old football cliches about there being no easy games in international football, it only taking a second to score a goal and it being a funny old game, Saint are tired old football cliches for only one reason - they're absolutely right.
I'm bound to have made a mistake somewhere, so if your score or placing seems all wrong, tally it up, let me know and I'll change it.
