I dunno, I thought we looked great going forward - Milner really had a stormer - it was one of the most convincing attacking performances for quite some time. Rooney needs a goal and then things will really start ticking.
Defensively, I thought we looked jittery. It'll get better though - I think Upson deserves to keep his place on merit though, he made some crucial tackles. Weakest link was Glen Johnson.

I thought for an hour it was a massive improvement.
James - 7; very calm, didn't put a foot wrong and a couple of hairy moments in the defence but didn't have a save to make.
Johnson - 6; looks a bit overweight to me and not moving freely but did ok. Lucky not to get booked early, but then a totally undeserved yellow.
Terry - 8; made a bit of a cock-up with the press conference, but couldn't fault his performance today. Esp. liked the attempted diving headed clearance.
Upson - 7; mostly calm and assured and I liked the balance provided by a left footed CB, but always liable to a wobbly moment.
A Cole - 6; Got forward well, but never got a telling ball into the box.
Milner - 8; I thought started poorly but after about 10 mins he transformed. The cross for the goal did wonders for his confidence and in the last 10 mins I thought he did superbly.
Gerrard - 7; much improved display and showed the energy and hunger you see in a Liverpool shirt.
Lampard - 5; didn't see anything really from Lampard. Didn't do anything majorly wrong but didn't contribute much either.
Barry - 5; a few sloppy passes and tackles and didn't seem to screen the back 4 particularly well.
Rooney - 6; tried hard and almost scored a couple of times but still doesn't look fit and was a bit selfish at times in his desperation to score a goal.
Defoe - 6; took the goal well, great run behind the defender but got bullied out of it by their centre backs. Looked more dangerous than Heskey but who isn't ?

I'm pleased to see the last few posts because for the first 20 minutes of the second half I thought we played some lovely stuff. Rooney's chance didn't really sit up for him but still needed a fingertip save and the post ... if that goes in we win 3-0 I think. Of course as nerves frayed a tiring side on a heavy pitch looked poor in the last 15. But some very encouraging signs I think.

I thought it was a good performance, especially off the back of a difficult week and the awful Algeria game. We moved the ball well and created a lot...some excellent individual performances around the pitch too.
My only worry is we look toothless without Rooney, and that's when he's completely out of form (or unfit).
With the momentum and lift from this win, I think we'll give our opponents a good game in the next round.

I'm no fan of Lampard, but I think that score is harsh. He did a lot of running, made himself available and generally put himself about really well.
You have to remember that Slovenia played in a very counter-attacking style, with just one player up front for large parts of the game. We had to work very hard to actually create chances.
I think the two strikers looked frustrated for much of the game, as is to be expected.

I disagree. Like someone said above it's about building momentum. If you do too well in the groups you may well peak too soon. See Holland, this has been their biggest downfall. We can now push on and build momentum from this and there's any chance that we will reach the final pushing aside dangerous opponents on the way.
Come on England :lux:

It was a bit strange, after about 15-20 mins of second half it all changed. Gerrard had been running midfield, so maybe Slovenia did something about it I couldn't spot? Couldn't fathom Slovenia's approach before that. They must have seen England struggle when the opposition packs midfield, but didn't do the same.

Absolutely spot on, Slovenia's population is only 4 times the size of Croydon. Our tactics and formation will be exposed against any half decent team. The only hope we have of going far in this thing is to change to 4-5-1 and match the other teams. All the top teams are playing 4-5-1 but I think Capello will stick with 4-4-2.

we looked decent attacking though another goal would have made life a lot easier. But we did look twitchy at the back against such a limited team whose keeper was their stand-out player. Upson made one brilliant saving tackle and one fine pass but looked tentative in the extreme in between. I fear we will be found out in the next round or two. For now though we have just about saved face.

We looked dangerous going forward, dominated possession, and defended soundly.
Thought Upson was superb. Would keep him in for Sunday.
Same applies for Defoe; thats why he should be starting. He was in the right place at the right time for the goal.
Delighted with the win; bring on whoever (I am thinking it will be the Germans).
Also over the moon for the US. I was in Yankee Doodles in Santa Monica and it was great that Donovans goals was literally the same moment as the finaln whistle went in our game. A great moment :)

by no means a world beating performance but much much better. lots of positives for me.
milner was a breath of fresh air and not my choice before this game, but i have seen the light and he must start the next game.
defoe was another good option, glad whenhe was named and we looked a lot better having a real goal scorer around.
upson, must admit not his biggest fan, would rather have seen dawson start, but he looked ok. a great saving tackle too.
terry was great. forgot the crap from this week and did what he does best. gave 110%, was fired up and that clearly rubbed off on those around him. like him or loath him, he IS the man for the job and our rock at the back. though glen johnson made the block in the end, that salmon style dive to block the ball was immense... loved it:lux:
joe cole... well the good point from him was capello will have been boosted in not starting him. him or milner, well no choice for the next game now. didnt do very much. i am a cole fan, but think everyone was getting tinted specs for the guy.
rooney... better but still not sharp. deffo better though, hopefully sharper still next game and will fire us onwards.
lampard/gerrard/barry... improved but that doesnt say much. gerrard... good again, lampard, quiet but better. barry... not much to say good or bad really.
not world beating overall but much better, could we be gaining momentum at the right time? hope so. we are better against better teams anyway. what was good to see was a bit of passion.. lots of it from the fans, cappello wanted it and the players did. its not over yet:p

Steady performance, which could have brought a big win. Instinctive finish by Defoe, a proper little poacher. The Slovenia keeper had an excellent game, and almost kept Defoe's goal out as well. James looks solid, seems like the jersey is his from now on. Thought Terry was excellent at the back, for all his criticism he certainly wears the shirt with pride & had a very good game, plus denied by a fine save. Onwards & upwards, we're through.

What the **** is up with Rooney? He's nowhere near right. :(I'm sure in commentary they said he had an ankle injury. Not sure how serious it is.
I thought we looked much more sound at the back. Upson made a massive difference. He's nowhere as slow as Carragher. That tackle 2nd half was timed to perfection. I hope he keeps his place for the 2nd Round.
Good decision making with our passing, too. Milner showed he's far more of an intelligent player than both SWP and Lennon put together. And we have that fox in the box at last, Defoe. I think he and Rooney have the makings of a good partnership. Rooney likes to drop deep to run at players, with Defoe looking to use his pace to beat offside traps and ghost into 6 yard box.
If only we'd have gotten that 2nd goal that our play deserved, we'd have pushed our GD up to win the group I think. Then we wouldn't be sweating on the Gha-Ger result.
Still some typical negative bollocks from some I see.
Depends if you think scraping out of a easy group in second place with a 1-0 against the smallest football nation in the world Cup gives lots of reasons for positivity? :)

Germany (and then the Argies) have both been good - but they both have weaknesses that the standard of their opposition has not been able to exploit. I happen to think England are capable of doing just that. Believe.

I thought the ref was great today, let the game flow and didnt hand out cards for every slightly mis timed tackle, he made one mistake in booking Johnson for diving but apart from that he was very good.
I thought Gerrard staying out left was the key today, when he cuts inside he just kills the shape of the team, him and rooney made inroads in the left hand channel.
Ill be honest Milner wasnt my choice but he did well, great crosses, Beckham stylee
I dont know whats the matter with rooney but he looks well of the pace, id start him next game but I think id change him if he doesnt improve, you cant afford to carry players.

Very nice 1st Half, and fair opening to the second.
Rooney should have put his away and probably Lampard too.
James has done well with the poisoned chalice. The defence not convincing for me. Although I like Terry's battling (cut out the silly errors).
Lampard was absent for an hour, but played some very useful stuff in the last 20 mins. Gerrard pretty good I thought.
Nice for Defoe, someone on here thought he would end up being a hero for us. Well thats a good start. I look at a player of his stature and would prefer to see him on the wing, certainly not as a centre forward. A couple of times he didn't really make it hard for their keeper, someone with more physical presence may have done.
Rooney, started nicely and faded. Is that an injury he has acquired today, or one that he has been carrying. Is this a negative consequence of twatface Ferguson rushing him back earlier this year.
Overall solid, professional, and I feel more to come.

Although England dominated possession for most of the game and creeated
enough chances to have easily won the group, we did tire over the last
20 minutes.
Interestingly the US had enough in their tank to produce a 93rd minute
goal to win themselves a less exacting path forward in the competition.
Perhaps their decision to have prepared at sea-level may have given
them the edge over England's training at altitude after all?
England have given themselves a mountain to climb, with games against
arch-rivals Germany and probably Argentina their dubious reward for
coming second in our group.
Our team will now be training at sea-level, so I live in hope......
