5.stage: 50-51

Part 2 of the BM CH will go from January 2011 to May 2011. Possibly with the winner from part 1 to meet the winner from part 2 in a superfinal at the end.

Groups of 4, the best two (14) and also the two highest scoring non finalists (irrespective of win/loss record) takes places in the last 16.
The bottom two go into the UEFA cup. Head to head’s, home/away.
The rules (simply put)

15 bets pr match (2 weeks pr match).

Two matches against each-other. Home/away rule; The “away team” will have to post up all their bets before the last day (will mean midnight Saturday’s). This giving the “home team” a slight advantage. You can of course bet on events taking place on the Sunday.

We are mainly using BM rules, that means for example that;

Scoring consists of total winnings and is inclusive of 10 point stake i.e. someone bets on a 6/4 horse and it wins their score becomes 25 (15 points profits plus the 10 pt stake) There is no score for any bets not used. Losing bets are scored as zero, not -10.
Any bet from an exchange bookie will have a 4% commission (on the winnings), if nothing else is explicitly stated in the post.

Players must quote where they're getting their prices.

After a bet has been posted up, one is not allowed to edit it..

In-play betting is not allowed. With exception for events that goes over several days; For example after 2nd round of a golf tournament has been completed or before play starts on the final day of test cricket.

For a bet to be valid, it must be placed before the published start time.

Remember fair play. Duplicating you’re opponents bets are not allowed.

The bets must be possible to do in real life.

The runner up is in!

Nice to get back to betting as I don't really bother with the monthly masters anymore as I prefer my bets to be around evens which is no good for them.

I thought you calculated it as 4% of the total return, not of the winnings? Happy either way as long as I know

Also I don't think you mentioned that in running bets are not allowed (assuming they're still not)

True. I have always calculated 4% of the total return. The rules in the first post was just lazily copied from something in the past.
I guess from all the comments about it (in the world cup thread and before), that people rather want 4% on the winnings. So let’s go for that.

IP betting is another thing. We allowed it for the World Cup and it seemed to work fine. But I could go either way on that for my part. Up to you guys..

I would say keep it to no in runnings, just encourages the home team to wait till Sunday and back 4 or 5 1.01s to get a win which isn't the point I reckon. Happy to go with the majority of course but that's my tuppence worth.

Do you still not use a spreadsheet for the scores? You might find it a lot quicker to use one. Anyway have sent the one I used (imagine you were on holiday or something) to the champs league when I scored it email which you're welcome to use as well

It has a formula to calculate exchange winnings of 4% of the profit, you just need to put the odds in and the rest is done for you. You're also welcome to ignore it of course :)

It means any price 1.04 or lower on the exchanges will actually lose you money even if it wins. 0.4 of a point could make a difference

Besides you never use the exchanges do you?

I agree with this:p

Ian Hart
02-08-2010, 10:25 PM
I'm certainly against in play betting, partly because (as has been said) it makes the end game a nonsense if someone who hasn't used all his bets works out he can overtake his opponent by sticking on a number of 1.01s, but also because it could potentially lead to disputes as the prices are uncheckable. This competition should be fun, and to me it would take the fun out of it (rather than increase it) if someone wins a match by virtue of late 1.01s, rather than having to try to find real bets.

Might I also float a small rule change though. Currently all events need to be completed by midnight on a Sunday for a bet to be valid, and this rule is applied strictly. That being the case, should we not also strictly apply a rule that for a bet to be valid, it must be placed before the published start time?

Maybe we have been too lenient about this in recent times. But I am all for applying that rule. Bets placed after it's published start time = not valid.
Works for me.

Finbar
03-08-2010, 08:02 AM
When has this ever been an issue (placing a bet after published start time)?

Only times I can think of is when a horse race is running late and bet might be posted up at 3.07 for a 3.05 race or something (which doesn't matter does it as it's still not in running?) or is it to stop something else which I'm missing?

I assume that bets placed in running when nothing is happening (i.e. after 2nd round of a golf tournament has been completed or before play starts on the final day of test cricket) are ok or are these also not allowed?

Finbar
03-08-2010, 08:02 AM

Stigma
03-08-2010, 08:09 AM
I remember some fotball matches where bets have been put up a few minutes into the match..for example. It all goes to where do you draw the line I guess. If you start bending the time/rules..then things might spiral more out of control.
We have allowed the in running bets you talk about of course. Not what is meant here I think.

It happened to me last time. Can't recall who I was playing, but I was beaten by two winning bets that were posted after the matches had kicked off. Stig said it was ok at the time (as only a few minutes had elapsed) so I didn't challenge it, but it's really an issue of where you draw the line. If "a few minutes" are ok, then what about 10 minutes, or 15 minutes etc. It's sensible to have a clear line of the published start time, then everyone knows where they stand.

Basically same format as the group stages of the Champions league. You are drawn against 3 other players and meet them twice. Home and away. Each match lasts for 2 weeks. 15 bets pr match.
The top 2 from each group going through to the knock-out stages..

I must have been a very short favourite before JCM got that with about 5 bets left. I wasn't impressed, especially as I was watching the game with my Spurs housemate and he said they would whip Pompey, although like all Spurs fans he knows nothing about football.

Let's see who can explain this most easily..

You are up against
1) Gooders
2) kayjay
3) Wardy91
4) ebyeeckeagle

First round
Group A
Gooders V ebyeeckeagle
kayjay V Wardy91

You play against each player in you're group twice. Home and away. In the first match you are up against kayjay. You being the away team means that you have to have posted up all you're bets before the last Sunday (can of course bet on events on that Sunday). Matches go over 2 weeks - 15 bets pr match. The winner from each match get's 3 points and their total added to the standings. Overall results over 6 matches determine which two players go through from each group.

Short version, post 15 bets during the next 2+ weeks (we start tomorrow) and beat kayjay's score..

Finbar

6 head to head group matches, top two in the group to qualify automatically then it becomes a straight knockout.

pretty much the same as the other Champs league (though that is a cheap imitation of this one, expect they'll drop it to 7 groups soon to copy us)

Short version, post 15 bets during the next 2+ weeks (we start tomorrow) and beat kayjay's score..

Home/away rule; The “away team” will have to post up all their bets before the last day (will mean midnight Saturday’s). This giving the “home team” a slight advantage. You can of course bet on events taking place on the Sunday.

I know its too late to post up rule changes, but does the home away rule actually have any impact on results out of interest?

Might be better to not let away team bet on the Sunday or alternatively make them post up on Friday.

Have you ever though about introducing draws for tight scoring matches in the group stages, say you have to win by 5% of your score to get the win?

To me..excluding the away team from betting on Sunday events seems a bit too much. Other option about a Friday deadline would make more sense of the two.
The whole point of it of course is to make it seem like the home team have an advantage.
Which they clearly have with the rules now.
As the home team, you can sit back with how many bets you want *****il the Sunday) and know exactly how many points the away team have or are chasing.

5% thing has never been discussed before. I find that close call matches are one of the great things about the BM. Just beating you're opponent by 2-3 points and so on..to me that is fun. 5% thing or similar also seem to complicate things even more.
But certainly both worthy of discussions..if not for this BM then maybe the next one..

Don't like the draw idea, the no posting on Sundays has worked well in the past and I think having to post up Sunday bets on the Friday is a bit unfair in terms of football injuries, horse non-runners plus I imagine some people can dedicate time to this on a Saturday which they couldn't otherwise do on a Friday

I'm for keeping it as is, works well I think

My only thinking is that I took advantage of betting on the NFL last masters as the away team, so it really gave the home team no advantage at all as games weren't finishing until 9ish, giving very little for the home team to bet on if they have any bets left. Just a few thoughts, i'm not particuarly keen on draws just thought i'd throw it out there.

Anyone want to look at the home away stats to see if there is much of an impact?

Not sure about that one stig.
Cardiff had only 15 players fit on Saturday. Have signed 2 players but have 4 away on international duty.
Sure they 'should' win but not sure the odds reflect the problems faced by them.

I took Burton @ 9/1 last week, and not sure I would bother with backing them at the 6/1 they are now available at.
