Part 2 of the BM CH 10/11 will go from January 2011 to June 2011. Possibly with the winner from part 1 to meet the winner from part 2 in a superfinal at the end.

15 bets pr match (2 weeks pr match).

Two matches against each-other. Home/away rule; Away teams bets have to finish before midnight on Saturday night.

Minimum odds limit 1.2.

We are mainly using BM rules, that means for example that;

Scoring consists of total winnings and is inclusive of 10 point stake i.e. someone bets on a 6/4 horse and it wins their score becomes 25 (15 points profits plus the 10 pt stake) There is no score for any bets not used. Losing bets are scored as zero, not -10.
Any bet from an exchange bookie will have a 4% commission (on the winnings), if nothing else is explicitly stated in the post.

Players must quote where they're getting their prices.

After a bet has been posted up, one is not allowed to edit it..

In-play betting is not allowed. With exception for events that goes over several days; For example after 2nd round of a golf tournament has been completed or before play starts on the final day of test cricket.

For a bet to be valid, it must be placed before the published start time.

Remember fair play. Duplicating you’re opponents bets are not allowed.

The bets must be possible to do in real life.

IP betting is usually up for debate in each tournament. We had it to a vote in the previous round and a clear majority didn’t want it.
One reason is because of the format of this competition. Home and away rule. Easier for the home team to sit back and wait for the away team to fail. And then post up a few 1.01 IP bets during the last day.

But as always..open for changes..is what the majority wants that goes:)

I was hoping that we next week could have a UEFA Super Cup final (A game between the reigning champions of the two cup competitions).

Have a terrible record against FB but may as well for a laugh.
For something different, how about we limit the 10 bets to just the same sport for both combatants??

Quite a few people signed up last time and then hardly turned up or not at all.

Why not limit it to 16 players?

And if anyone joins this time and then doesn't play - exclude them from comps for 12 months, unless they've got a bloody good reason.

16 is certainly a very good number..
Let's just see how it goes in the next few days..let's first get to 16..

US sports are pretty popular, so if u want, can include Ice hockey and Baseball.

Stig, how about each player select a type of sport (i.e. 16 sports)

Why not make it so the home team chooses the sport that all bets must be placed on? Gives the home team that slight more advantage than the extra day they normally get.

Finbar
14-01-2011, 12:01 PM
Not really a fan of that, some people specialise in horse racing so puts them at a disadvantage straight away

Swanny32
14-01-2011, 12:10 PM
How does that put them at a disadvantage?

Finbar
14-01-2011, 12:13 PM
Because when they're not the home team they will have to bet on something which they have no idea on, whereas other people bet on lots of different sports so will not have that disadvantage (and I'm one who bets on loads of different sports, just don't want to scare other players off)

Personally I wouldn't be a big fan of that idea.
Can see several problems with it.
Say one chooses cricket for example, then not only is there perhaps limited matches to bet on, but also many of the players wouldn't know what they are betting on. I have given up trying to understand cricket rules..
As an example that.
I mostly bet on football, throw in some handball or winther sports even..could get really ďmessyĒ if I chose cross-country skiing as the betting sport.

My thoughts about the just betting on one event was down to kajay's suggestion for the Super cup final (winner CH vs winner UEFA cup). Not for the normal competition. Just something special for that one match.

But of course..as always..if the majority likes the idea then..

The match went to the last ball but Tim Bresnan could only manage a single when a six would have snatched a win.

Finch made 53 not out off 33 balls on a slow pitch as the hosts, batting first, recovered from 80-5 to post 147-7.

Ian Bell (39) gave England a bright start, but a lack of boundaries cost the tourists as they finished on 143-6.

England looked buried when they went into the final over needing 18 for victory.

That had become 13 from three when Chris Woakes, England's debut hero in Adelaide two days earlier, smashed Brett Lee for six over long on to ignite hopes of a last-gasp turnaround.

Up to you..sure we can arrange something if you want to play now. In a previous masters some put up bets ahead of time (missing odds)..when they were away.
But a sub solution might also work. First now trying to get to 16 players.
14 now..(not counting you)..so should be easy enough. If more people want in then..hoping to get it up to 20 players.

Right been through last 2 tournaments, removing any results where someone didn't bet or just bet once. The results:

Home wins 59 - 51%
Away wins 57 - 49%

I reckon that's as close to a negligible advantage as you can get. I think I proposed last tournament that the away team has to have all their bets finished by Saturday midnight, rather than just having them placed. This would then give the home team all of Sunday, knowing their target, to put some bets together.

Nice piece of stats there! Would have thought there would have been more home wins.
Certainly an interesting idea. I do worry though that home teams might just save up more bets for the last Sunday. Knowing that on Saturday night, they will know the exact score to beat.

What do the players think? If people are up for it then..
Any other suggestions to give the home team more advantage?

Generally I'm not one for hanging on till Sunday if I'm the home team, I'm not sure whether doing so would have benefited me anyway.

I think Ardeo's idea of having all away bets finished by Midnight would be a better idea, for people like myself who love to use bets on the NFL, which is on Sundays, it would ruin their game plan and would definitely be an advantage to their opponent. It does mean though that because I couldn't bet on the NFL I'd be forced to bet on Football or the Golf (as they are the only two other things I know much about), neither of which I have had much success with over the last year.

NFL won't be on most on the comp anyway. Might take some golf out the equation as well. But you will always have the middle weekend to put on best. I think anyone leaving all their bets for a Sunday would be disadvantaging themself anyawy.

I'm nervous about commenting on the various ideas, being that I might not be in the next competition. However, I think there have been some very interesting suggestions.

I believe the competition, already very enjoyable, would be even better if the home team had a noticeable advantage each time, because it will give scope to making the matches even more strategic. Probably the simplest way of achieving this to allow the home team to have more bets (e.g. home team has 15, away team has only 10 or maybe 12) but I'd be happy with some of the other ideas too. :p

And I totally agree with Gooders's sentiments about those who promise to enter and then never appear, or (as frequent) play the first two matches and then disappear if they've lost.

Been a few suggestions on how to make the home advantage feel more ďrealĒ.
Ardeoís stats showed that there really is no difference; Home wins 59 - 51% / Away wins 57 - 49%
Best thing I heard is maybe the notion of the home team having more bets. Although I fear that 3-5 more bets is too much. Maybe just 1 bet..just my thought.
But letís vote on it then..

A) Home team getís to choose the sport to bet on.
B) Away teams bets have to finish before midnight on Saturday night.
C) Home team getís 3 more bets then away team (18-15)
D) Home team getís 1 more bet then away team (16-15)
E) Status quo

Many options here..maybe makes it harder to settle on something..letís see how we go..

A) Home team getís to choose the sport to bet on. Might be an option but in a limited manner i.e. away team has to use a specific number of bets on chosen sport (1 or 2 would be my suggestion). Sport would require a minimum number of betting markets though - no women's Norwegian seal wrestling :)
B) Away teams bets have to finish before midnight on Saturday night. Not sure this will have enough of an impact to change the advantage
C) Home team getís 3 more bets then away team (18-15) I'm with Stig on this - 3 bets is too many
D) Home team getís 1 more bet then away team (16-15) This would be my second best (if no-one likes the sport picking option). My only concern is if this extra bet becomes a lucky "Hail Mary" and turns around a big deficit - makes a bit of a nonsense if the competition is meant to measure consistent ability
E) Status quo :moo:

I'm voting A, but I like si1965's idea of limiting the selected sport to maybe 3 bets.

If you're looking for a 65%/35% home win / away win then I would say B gives that kind of advantage but does mean the home team can wait till the last minute.

That or at least 3 more bets, 1 more bet would probably make no discernable difference, I really don't think it makes much of one in the monthly

16 players all of whom look like they'll show up no matter what :lux:

I vote B as its my idea, otherwise vote A. Maybe could be as high as a third of the bets on chosen sport. Would also make it interesting and be the most realistic "home" advantage. I think also you would have to pick your sport at the start and stick with it, so that removes minority sports that aren't reguarly on or have limited markets. I'm sure you can still do easily football, horse racing, tennis, cricket and golf.

Don't like extra bets as suddenly it's no longer an even race, that's more handicapping than a slight advantage.

A vote for A really.

ardeo

Have we considered the possibility of draws this year? I.e. you have to win by 10% of your score. Would add an extra dimension to the league stage.

Didn't get much response on that idea last time it was mentioned.
Not a big fan of it myself, I feel that some of the best matches on here are the close fougth matches, winning by just a few points..drama.

But not sure what the other players think this time around?

Flat Noodle
17-01-2011, 03:04 PM
Not a fan of the draw option as well, so it's a 'no' from me.

Now, regarding the 'home team advantage', I think option A will end up being too confusing. Other rules will need to be in place to ensure it'll work such as when do the home team need to decide, what if he didn't post the sport in time... I think it leaves too much room for ambiguity and will be very difficult for Stig/Fin to regulate and keep track.

B is ok, but I don't think it'll make much difference in the end.

'no' to C and D since I believe that will cause too much favor to home team.

I'll vote A

B then A.

Agree with Fin, maybe there should be a lower limit to bets, i actually reckon you'd do pretty well picking 15 1.01 bets each match, presuming they all won. Maybe 1.25 in general. Although not sure how many non in-play 1.01 bets you could find on a Sunday anyway.

Stigma
17-01-2011, 06:46 PM
I like the lower limit to bets too. Has to be above 1.10 odds for example.
Think it should be for the whole tournament. Not just on a Sunday though.
Shouldn't really be a problem, as nobody really do 1.1 odds bet anyways.

D or C

there's no test of punting prowess betting on sports you don't have a clue about IMO

Good discussion here -
I like the minimum odds limit (although there has been a 'gentleman's agreement' in place for most competitions that has ensured people place reasonable bets / do not copy opponent bets, etc.). Perhaps there should be an upper limit as well to stop random punts, although multi's should be allowed.

Looking at the 'Home team' advantage issue, I think the sport choice option could work best as long as both parties have to do a minimum number of bets in the chosen sport - thus the home team gets to bet in their comfort zone and it ensures no esoteric sports are chosen. It could be that you are up against someone with the same choice or and all-rounder with a wide betting knowledge but home advantage should not be a guarantee of success after all.

Stigma

Which sports do we chose though?
Football and horse betting seems to be the biggest two sports in the BM's.
If I had to bet on UK horse racing..would just be silly..wouldn't have a clue.
Can't really see the fun in that.

ardeo
17-01-2011, 09:58 PM
Think that's a fair point Stig, be pretty unfair on some people, mainly the horse specialists. Don't really want people to be forced to take random punts on a sport they don't know about.

Although on the other side there is plenty of info and advice people can find and might make it a bit more interesting people having to investigate something knew/different.

Wasn't thinking of having all 15 bets on the one sport - 5 seems about right. The point is you get to turn the tables when you are at home - I seem to remember Stig tipping cross-country skiing in the betting thread in the past.

ardeo
17-01-2011, 10:11 PM
Even with 5 it could be a really big advantage, especially if you choose to pick something other than football or horse racing. Could end up being 10-15 unless someone gets lucky on something they don't know about.
