I was just typing in a few old players into Wikipedia and for some reason I typed in Itzak Zohar - remember him? Apparently, £1m based on a video. Missed a penalty against Southampton I seem to recall as well.
Anyway, have a look at this:

Not only did he score for Israel in them beating England at Beach Football, but check out those speedos. Wrong in every word!

Don’t remind me. Grabbing the ball away from our regular penalty taker Bruce Dyer. In many ways that “moment” killed us that season. Had we gone 2-1 up, and gone onto beat Southampton, we would have secured our first home win of the season. Yet he missed, and things took a nose dive.
I’m pretty sure Zohar, jetted out of the country after that result and played in a friendly against the clubs wishes, and was never to be seen again.
Apart from Shipps purple patch in October/November we lacked a real goal scorer, although the adidtiona of Jansen in March was a welcome addition, although by then to little to late.

Itzik, Itzak or Itzhak??
These are the three versions I have seen - which is correct??
Apparently signed on the strength of one pre-season friendly and video evidence. According to the Croydon Advertiser Steve Coppell is said to admit he was one of his worst signings.

Well he wasn't one of the better ones, that's for sure
With the likes of Emblen also signed, was a bad summer for SSC - but we also got Lombardo which was the stuff dreams are made of!

In the same way Marco was signed on the basis of a recommendation to Coppell who he regarded as a “close friend”.
Emblem/Ismael were two signings that hugely disappointed, and for Palace to see little return in excess of £5 million says it all really.
Warhurst showed glimpses, but his injury record went before him, and post Christmas we saw very little of the guy.

My Dad used to do lot of business with an Israeli company and when we signed Zohar their MD was raving about him saying how he was miles better than Berkovic and is a hero in Israel. My Dad had to tell him every week how crap he was

I thought Marco Gabbiadini was an excellent finisher, and not a bad footballer at all.
However, he was shaped like an oompa loompa, and not really designed particularly well to have the ball hoofed 3 feet over his head for most of the game. A very puzzling signing. It didn't help that Andy Gray clearly hated him for not being Ian Wright, either.

Marco was always going to be facing an uphill task. It was almost impossible to replace Wright, yet anyone who came in, would ultimately face comparisons with him.
Marco showed glimpses, but the football played at the time wasn't suited to his qualities. Possibly bought in haste, and the club paid well over the odds. He was worth no more that 1million, yet we paid 1.8m. I saw similarities in the Andy Carroll transfer where clubs "Bump" up prices, way beyond their truth worth.
Think Gray left for Spurs on loan, shortly before Marco left to join Derby. Gray’s attitude was poor in the final months, and it spoke volume in his performances.

I'm impressed he's watched Finding Nemo over 17 times...

Itzhak Zohar - Synonymous with failure.
Interesting that our last two ventures into the premiership contained death blows in the Southampton home fixture.

They (Southampton) were predominantly our bogey team for a while in the early 90’s. I remember absolutely battering them at home season 92/93' only to lose my a lucky Iain Dowie goal, who's celebration was as bad as his facial features.

Weren't we all with Andy on that one?

Possibly not the most appropriate direction to go in for 'Memory Lane'.

Lol, well I'm sure none of us wanted to see the back of Wright, but perhaps making his replacement feel unwanted wasn't the best way to go ;)

Vince, with you on that, but Gabbiadini was always fighting a losing battle; replacing our best ever player, best goalscorer, local lad, most popular player.
I don't think I've man-loved anyone like I loved Ian. He WAS Palace. They say no one is bigger than the club, but Ian came mighty close. We collapsed after he left.
He went on to break Arse scoring records and become one of their greatest players. He was awesome.
NOTE TO YOUNGERS: He was nothing like the awful celebrity and crap TV presenter and rent a shitty quote pundit he is nowadays.

Warhurst was quality when he was fit. A really good player who could play at sweeper, defence, midfield...and attack. Shame he was hit by so many i injuries that season.
I was also really excited when Zohar signed as an Israeli bloke told me he was better than Berkovic. He was another one hit by injuries, but unlike warhurst, he was pretty rubbish when he played. I think most Palace fans' memory of his is when he stole the ball off Bruce Dyer and missed the pen.
As for Emblen, wasnt he signed off the back of one good performance against us? Meant to be our midfield destroyer, but was woefully out of his depth in the prem.
Despite going down, I loved that team.... Edworthy, Gordon, Hermann, Warhurst, Lombardo, Jansen, Curcic, Bent...we had the makings of a good team there but our season just descended into anarchy. With a good manager (not Lombardo!) and more defenders and defensive midfielders, we could've stayed up. We destroyed some teams, but defensively we were shocking.

Missed a penalty in that game as well..:o
Was supposed to be a dead ball specialist the penalty was one of the worse certainly sealed the season we had done ok away from home early on.....we needed a boost over Christmas as the season was going away from us a moment that sealed the season

Yes, some players are beyond just 'good'. They're like a lifeblood. I remember when we sold him, I was sitting on a bench eating my lunch in Dorking High Street, reading the paper about the transfer. I was depressed for weeks!
I think that was the last time I ever got 'really' upset about a transfer. After that, anything seems manageable. It also helped me realise that you can't let yourself get too attached to players, who are just commodities at the end of the day in reality.
