I've applied for some. It's a bit of a gamble as to how many events to apply for knowing it will go to a ballot.
Oh well. I'll either get all of them or none of them knowing my luck. And I bet it rains on the days I go :D

Going for boxing, football, beach volleyball. I'm sure there's no other blokes that will be trying to get tickets for these unpopular events

Sums this country up. You can buy tickets for the main events with the cheapest ticket being £50. That's going to mean that only the toffs get the finishing line tickets or those willing to go into debt. This country is a disgrace the way it exploits it's people.

Don't be silly - the best seats with the best views are always the most expensive at any venue for any event in any country.
Do try not to blame everything on "this country".

Gone for Opening Ceremony, one of the athletics finals night and a track cycling finals night, dare say with about a million others.
Organisers kindly put one of the cycling road race circuits right past my front door so can watch that one for free out of the window. Guess it will last about 5 seconds given the speed they go.

This country is great if 25% of tickets are £25 quid or under.
Compare to how many local people attended the Beijing Olympics, south Africa world cup etc.

Loads of locals attended the SA WC - the tickets were very cheap for Africans.

If you're desparate to see an event and don't mind paying a little bit extra (10-20% above the face value of the ticket), here's a tip...
Just as the organisers had to open the UK ballot up to EU residents due to EU law, the allocations of tickets that have gone out to EU countries' national Olympic associations also have to be open to UK residents.
If you look at the 'eligibility' tab page on the 2012 website you will see who is selling these allocations on behalf of each national Olympic association.
By my reckoning the sellers for Germany and Denmark are selling on a first come, first served basis. You can also very easily enter the Sweden ballot.

Wow - looked at this last night and as usual they are charging exorbitant prices.
I have no idea to apply for a lot or a little. I mean basically I would defintely like to see some athletics but do I apply for 5 days on the basis I might get tickets for one day?
Just apply for what I most want?
It seems they are making life as utterly expensive and as difficult as possible for the consumer. Also where is the priority system?
Surely members of cycling clubs should have priority for cycling events, members of athletics clubs, archery clubs etc
It's awful that a corporate client of Lloyds will get their pick of events for free while say a swimming coach who has worked unpaid for 20 years at his local club has to go into a lottery...

In a way they have as the various associations get ticket allocations - I have every confidence they will not trickle down to the mere mortals in those associations tho...There was an early argument by Seb Coe for doing just this for all the tickets but it got shot down when pointed out the public were paying for the thing and Londons council tax payers in particular would probably have said no if this had gone ahead.

I've probably been thinking about this far too deeply, but here are some things I have spotted about the 2012 ballot.
1. The organisers have said that "the aim of the ballot is to maximise the number of different applicants who are allocated tickets to the games". I reckon this means that you should split your application up into as many pieces as possible, giving your mum/dad/wife/husband/son/daughter some events to apply for in addition to your own application. I also reckon it makes sense not to mix popular events and unpopular events in a single application - e.g. if an application is for cycling and wrestling tickets, you'll almost certainly get the wrestling and then be at a disadvantage for the cycling.
2. Contrary to what some people are thinking, the organisers haven't said that you can definitely sell back unwanted tickets. They have said only that you can put them up for sale on an approved resale site. Don't therefore take it for granted that you will be able to hand back less popular tickets.
3. UK residents aren't limited to the official UK ballot. You can also apply for other European countries' allocations of tickets provided that you're willing to pay a 20% (capped at £40) 'handling fee'. The Danish ballot, for example, looks a pretty good bet if you're willing to pay that bit extra for athletics tickets. https://london2012.sportsworld.co.uk/
I realise that some on here aren't especially keen on the Olympics, but I hope that this might be of use to others that are!

Be careful with buying overseas. The companies are allowed to charge a mark-up AND a "reasonable admin and postage fee". The site for the US had prices nearly double the UK and the reason they gave was exchange rates fluctuate and they were allowed extra leeway on the mark-up in case rates changed. This is the same with the European ones, too.
Apply through UK.

This is certainly true in some cases.
But the Denmark ballot I picked out allows payment in £s, charges a 0% admin fee on a UK debit card and allows you to pick up your tickets from an office in central London.
You'll end up paying £24 for a £20 athletics ticket this way, or £60 for a £50 ticket, which might just be worth it to someone who desparately wants to see the 100m finals.

I applied for Opening ceremony- the £20 tickets- so silly that it then jumps to £150 tickets!
And cycling sprint finals, at £50 a ticket.
The thing is, I'm unlikely to have £180 in my account if I am successful with both (which is unlikely). Do the organisers try and 'automatically' take the money out your account between the certain dates, so if you dont have it you're gonna get into trouble with the bank?
Would be so much easier if you have an allocated time to pay for them at your leisure, meaning if needed you can borrow money or something.

Most big tournaments are the same. I have my RWC 2011 tickets and have had so for about a year already - the tournament doesn't start until September this year.
The only reason football is a bit different is because you have to wait to see who qualifies which is much more reduced with other events.

Mine was a bit of a generalisation but aimed at the people who have said they have 'massively over ordered' to the tune of a couple of grand and are hoping they don't get all they've requested. Which does seem a bit silly to me.

Applied for the opening ceremony and the Men's Keirin final session at the cycling.
That alone was £1200.
Might get Mrs A to apply for more opening ceremony tickets and some randoms (sports you would not normally bother seeing - handball and shooting etc they have to be cheap right?).

Have my Danish in-laws over during 2012 Olympics and their main event they want to see is Handball (very popular over there) but kind of hard buying tickets now for them not knowing if you will see your country or not so will wait until next year and potential re-sales on the official site for the games they want to see.
For now just went for opening ceremony/football/athletics finals, so no chance there :)

Going for early athletics, swimming, cycling sessions for the whole family, round 1 football for me & my brother (two matches for £20 at Wembley seems like bloody good value), and round 2 tennis at Wimbledon for me, Mrs Statto & my Mum. Be nice if we got the lot, but will be happy to get anything really!
Can't see the point in applying for unpopular sports just to be able to say I've seen the olympics - I'd rather just watch it on telly than go to a weightlifting session!

From the BBC
There are 6.6 million tickets in all, but about half will go to corporate and VIP guests.
GreatGonzo
26-04-2011, 08:48 PM
Half for the bigger events and as low as 15-20% for others, average of 30% corporate i think.
Gone for Opening Ceremony, Football 1/4, 1 finals day at the rowing and the last 2 days of athletics.

I would have applied for a lot more but there's a chance you'll be lucky and get them all. Then I would have been in deep trouble. Hopefully be able to get something when the resale comes about.

I may have overdone it.....9 events and a total bill of £900. Most of them for lesser days at the Athletics,Cycling and boxing or for more obscure sports Archery and Modern Pentathlon......hence I am concerned that I might get a lot more than I anticipated!! Wasn't as oversubscribed as I thought other than the big events, which I ignored anyway. Worse still, I had to use a Debit card as I only have Mastercard credit cards. Mrs Diehard was heard trying to rip my head off at 1am last night!!! She hasn't forgiven today either!

Couldn't afford a lot now so only went for the Wembley football semi-final, basketball heats and the best day of swimming heats.
Figure I can always buy tickets when the exchange website is set up.

Anyone keeping an eye on their online banking for a payment?
I have a pending payment on my credit card which appears to be the tickets - I applied for 36 tickets for 18 events (1-3 tickets per event, £20-95 range and a wide mix of sports) and only look to have got about 4 tickets in total (plus the £6 booking fee of course).

Got bugger all. I even went for some of the less fashionable tickets like Handball. Of well, I'll see if I get any in the next round. If not I guess I can still go to the public events like the cycling.
