Just a really hard week this week. Most confident on Independiente, the price for Boca is awful value, don't touch. Banfield could be chucked in with Independiente and hesitantly I'd say Argentinos as value is there

19 Mar 17:00 Quilmes v Independiente 2.75 3.20 2.50
+53

Independiente is the NAP of the weekend. Improving side, with the individuals to come out on top. Quilmes P5 W0 D0 L5. Genuinely horrific outfit.

19 Mar 19:15 Godoy Cruz v Lanus 2.40 3.30 2.90
+53

Inseperable really. Identical records, identical GD. If I were to favour either side I'd go with Lanus, just one or two more match-winners in the side than Godoy Cruz who are blowing seriously hot and cold this season after selling Ramirez in Jan

19 Mar 22:10 Arsenal de Sarandi v River Plate 2.50 3.25 2.80
+53

River playing well and IMO could be top if they had a decent striker, not that lump Pavone who offers so little on his own. Lamela is outstanding though and Arsenal are an average side. Will be interesting to see if Chichizola keeps his place after a shocking error vs Velez, can't see Arsenal winning but hard fixture to pick.

20 Mar 17:00 Newell's v Argentinos Jrs 2.15 3.30 3.40
+53

Newell's are only kept off the bottom by Quilmes (who, as discussed, are a pub side) and were thumped by struggling Independiente 4-0 last time out. Argentinos unbeaten this season - the only unbeaten side although 4 draws from 5 games. Can't see NOB ending this run, AH with Argentinos.

20 Mar 19:00 Velez Sarsfield v San Lorenzo 2.05 3.30 3.60
+53

Another toughie. Top notch outfit Velez discussed many times on the BT. Ramirez, Martinez, Silva, Fernandez etc are almost an embarrassment of riches although their inconsistency has been caused by a CL run. SL bought well in Jan and also have some class individuals, this could go either way but if both sides played to their best then Velez would win. They play CL 4 days later but at home, and against a side they should beat so I'd be leaning their way.

20 Mar 21:15 Racing Club v Estudiantes LP 2.50 3.25 2.80
+53

Top of the league and playing excellently takes on the reigning champs and on their day, the best side in Argentina. As with other sides, the CL has taken its toll on their domestic form seeing them lose some games against shocking opponents. On the back of an easy home win vs Guarani of Paraguay though, and with no midweek fixture upcoming, they should be at their potent best. Inseperable, but a true test of La Academia's title credentials. With Teo Gutierrez in this form they'll fancy this but I have to say draw.

20 Mar 23:15 Boca Juniors v Olimpo B Blanca 1.66 3.60 5.25
+53

Boca in crisis, only sp astics Quilmes have accrued fewer points. Olimpo overachieving and Maggiolo tied at the top of the scorers list. Double chance Olimpo is 2.05 and represents a great shout. Boca will eventually snap back into life but they are all over the place at the moment. They're so desperate I wouldn't be surprised to see an unfit Riquelme rushed back to plod around the pitch lazily and contribute nothing.

21 Mar 22:00 Gimnasia LP v CA Tigre 2.30 3.25 3.10
+53

They're improving but Gimnasia have lost both of their home games in their new stadium. Tigre are about the same level and have a threat in Stracqularsi. Wouldn't feel confident but the draw is best value here.

21 Mar 22:15 Banfield v Huracan 1.66 3.60 5.25
+53

3 straight wins and Banfield are sitting pretty. They should beat a poor Huracan side that have only lost once this season but only got their first win last week against (that dreadful side again) Quilmes. Banfield should win but the price is too skinny.

Treble of Ind, Olimpo/Draw, Banfield is worth a tenner.

I like Racing, Independiente, Banfield. Boca Olimpo is tricky... Olimpo are playing some sweet sweet football right now, and scoring for fun. But, Riquelme back and in the Bombonera, I like Boca.

GodstoneEagle
19-03-2011, 02:41 AM
Tough call Len, Riquelme apparently lined up on the left in training for Boca. Olimpo up in 3rd and Boca have been v poor recently but I'm convinced they'll snap out of it soon. Riquelme isn't fully fit though and is enough of a passenger usually.

Racing is a brave call against a good side but I'm loving the way we're playing at the moment. Teo Gutierrez looks class, Yacob was good captaining the national side yesterday and is key. Big fan of Hauche too. If Gio was fit I'd be really confident of them holding on but IMO it depends on how long Estudiantes stay in the CL as to whether they are distracted from league duty.

You said 18-1 for them winning the league was decent value...You are crazy! Like I said, I'll give you 100-1 :hi: They are looking decent though. I have three of them in my GranDt team, de hecho.

First half in Quilmes just finished. Independiente looking pretty comfortable. I think they will add another one in the second half.

I saw the second half - thought Independiente looked better early on, then seemed to get a bit complacent and Quilmes looked better after their equaliser.

So of the ones I advised you to bet on, there were just 4 results with only two winning but level stakes would give you 36.25% profit.

Two more games this fecha but one I'm uncertain on and the other has Banfield at too skinny a price.

As above, unconfident on Gimnasia and Tigre but Gimnasia came out on top. Confident on Banfield but the price lacked value (latest 26' 1-0 Banfield)

I've started up an excel and will do this every week :)

3:11am Edit: Banfield throw away 2-0 lead and Huracan get a point. Proving there was no value :)

After a couple of unlucky weeks we return this week with what, on the face of it, looks to be a better weekend to make picks. The season is bedding in and sides are finding their grooves (or not in some cases) but there are plenty of good prices to be taken advantage of.

Whilst not at enormous prices, it’s difficult to see past Estudiantes beating a poor All Boys side, despite slipping up against inferior opposition twice already this season at home. This game can be put in a double with Argentinos to beat Quilmes, who got their first point of the campaign at home last week but will struggle against a dynamic Red Bugs side with plenty of attacking talent.

The value bet of the week for sure is Banfield to win at Independiente, the Green and Whites are 4th and have only lost to table-topping Olimpo this season and beaten reigning champions Estudiantes. They look a different outfit from the one that finished last season so poorly under ex-boss Falcioni. Their hosts have won one of their last 14 league games, against second-bottom Newell’s and also have a vital Libertadores game in midweek, 3.00 is huge for a Banfield win but if you wish to play safe the DNB option is 2.2 and still represents an excellent punt.

A relegation clash between Gimnasia and Huracan will be an interesting clash but strikes one as too hard to call, Gimnasia benefited from some scandalously suspicious refereeing last weekend so it will be interesting to see how they perform without assistance. They appear to be the better side, but an away fixture, and one with potentially serious repercussions in the relegation picture makes it one to stay away from for the punter.

Lanus host Racing and despite having some good personnel, the lack of an effective striker means that El Granate rely too much on goals from their midfield, even if it is a very talented one. Racing will continue with their attacking 3-4-3 and it looks doubtful they’ll lose on this short away trip but just to be safe DNB Racing is 2.1 and looks good.

Even with Pavone injured (some would say a blessing), River are rightfully odds on at home to a poor Newell’s Old Boys side, the creativity of youngsters Lanzini and Lamela will be creative as always and at 1.8 this bet is probably one of your bankers for the week.

Tigre host Godoy Cruz in a game I wouldn’t like to call, 2 defeats on the bounce hosts 2 wins on the bounce but Stracqularsi is dangerous and I’m not convinced by Godoy’s form, not to mention the fact that they play midweek in the Libertadores. Avoid this game.

Crisis club Boca face a tough trip to play Colon in Santa Fe, even with Riquelme back it’s hard to see how they could get a result from this one but it’s certainly a fairly unpredictable encounter as Boca have too good a squad to not bounce back from this dreadful slump soon enough. DNB Colon or just let this one lie.

Quick question for GE- What effect does an international weekend have on Argentinian football?

GodstoneEagle
29-03-2011, 04:30 PM
none. There is an Argentine team made only of domestic-based players that played a few weeks ago but only a couple of domestic players are in the full squad. The league continues. Biggest effect is the Colombians, Paraguayans etc that have to go away.

GodstoneEagle

Gimnasia vs Independiente is two rubbish sides, and is a relegation 6-pointer without doubt. If I were to pick a bet I'd go Ind DNB.

Banfield are going well this year and Argentinos disappointed me against Quilmes but they're the only unbeaten side in the league. Would say a draw.

Lanus should be way too good for All Boys who've lost 4 on the bounce and I love 2.6 as a price.

Velez are a class side as we know and I'd say slightly better than Olimpo who were knocked off the top last week. But they've got a good home record and it's a tough place to go. Draw best value for me, as DNB Velez 1.72 isn't quite fat enough.

Newells have been hopeless and are winless in plenty, 3 straight L's but will see the visit of Arsenal as a chance for points. Arsenal nothing special in truth and this game's tough to call. Neither have enough to call this a win, low-scoring draw.

Racing should beat Tigre as they are flying this season although last week was ONE HELL of a blip at Lanus. 1-0 up after 60' to lose 4-1. Poor keeping though. Training ground fight this week too, price seems a touch light but I'm still sure they'll do it. Stracqularsi the danger for Tigre.

Godoy Cruz, whilst inconsistent, are a Grade B side in this league. Huracan are a D. GC win.

Bet of the weekend. Don't care if Quilmes have started picking up points, they don't score (just 4 in 7) and River don't concede (just 4 in 7). Lamela and Lanzini sparkle in attack and with Caruso replacing the injured Pavone, he scored two last week. 2.1 is too big, really can't see logic behind this one. I'll never tip another bet in my life if Quilmes win this, should be 10/1

SL are playing really well at the moment but this prace isn't enough for me. Won't be touching this game. Colon are an ok outfit and whilst ten places below San Lorenzo, they'd draw level on points with them if they won.

Boca Estudiantes. Mouth-watering. Having seen Boca's pathetic form come to an end with a 1-0 win last weekend, they have a real challenge this sunday. Estudiantes are a top side, but have a long journey back from Colombia. I'm trying to ascertain if Braña will be back for them as he'd be a boost but I can't pick this. No bet here.

Think I might have a dabble on River Plate Clean Sheet @ 2.25 (Bet365) - River have managed to keep a clean sheet in their last two matches (against better opposition than Quilmes) and this does protect against the 0-0 if Quilmes park the coach in front of the goal :)
Also, River are not exactly prolific in front of goal (only 7 in 7 games) and this average drops away from home (2 in 3).

si1965

Actually your other pick (All Boys v Lanus) looks even better -

All boys have failed to score in their last 5 matches, have yet to score at home and only scored twice in 7 League games this season (bizarrely a 2-1 victory away at Velez).

Lanus, have yet to win away this season (probably the basis for the good price) and have only found the net twice on their travels (Banfield and Newells old Boys). Their good home form (unbeaten and 9 goals in 3 games) shows that they have the ability.

Lanus Clean Sheet @ 2.75 (Bet365)

Godoy Cruz v Huracan

Godoy Cruz, whilst inconsistent, are a Grade B side in this league. Huracan are a D. GC win.

Final Score: Godoy Cruz 3 Huracan 1

I saw quite a bit of this game, which was played on Saturday. Huracan were a bit unlucky I thought. The game was VERY physical, with the stronger-looking Huracan players repeatedly barging into the Godoy Cruz ones in the first half, and taking them out American Football style, and then the Godoy Cruz players doing the same back. Amazingly, the referee just seemed to let it all go. Unlike some Argentinian games, this one was a good game to watch - as well as all the physical stuff, there was a lot of exciting attacking skill, mostly from Godoy Cruz.

Final Score: Boca Juniors 2 Estudiantes 1

Saw a bit of this game. Good atmosphere and an exciting game. Estudiantes looked strong and organised, but they started to sit back a little as the second half progressed, and Boca took the initiative, with some exciting attacking moves, and they scored the winner a few minutes from the end.

i watched it too. Somoza did excellently to nullify Veron but also, to let Riquelme play. Vital role from him. Boca would have been hugely up for this though, will be interesting to see if they can beat the smaller teams where the situation is on his head. Maybe Falcioni has turned a corner though.

Thoughts on this weekends odds:

Estudiantes are a great side as we have seen in the Apertura and this season too, where despite their Continental commitments they’ve still managed to be top of the Clausura table despite a few surprising results. Since returning to La Plata from their temporary home in Quilmes, El Pincha have surprisingly lost 2 of their 4 home games in domestic competition. San Lorenzo are really in the mix, they strengthened very well over January and are just 2 points off top with a game in hand albeit a tough one against Velez. 1.8 seems too skinny for an Estudiantes win and DNB San Lorenzo is a huge 3.40 and would be my advice.

Independiente seem to have turned a corner, they’re unbeaten in 6, their last defeat coming at home to Godoy Cruz in the Libertadores 3 weeks back. So in a repeat fixture, one would have to fancy the Mendoza side to repeat this feat. They’re 3rd in the league, unbeaten in 4 and in 2 games against Independiente in March they have taken 4 points. Given all this, 3.1 is too generous for the away side.

Colon are a decent side but only consistent in their inconsistency. They’ve won their lost 3 on the road but lost their last 3 at home. Olimpo were top of the Clausura table until they lost their last two games. This seems to have heavily affected the price as 4.00 is huge for them to win this game given Colon’s home form and the fact that Olimpo’s two recent defeats have been against good opposition, the straight win, DNB or Double chance Olimpo is your bet.

Arsenal really aren’t great but winless Quilmes are a truly pathetic entity who are already doomed and have been for some time. 1.7 just about represents value.

Huracan host Racing in a tough encounter to call, whilst I’d favour Racing, who were flying until losing their last 3 games, they would still appear to have too much class for Huracan. The price is not enticing in the slightest though, I’ll be leaving this alone.

River host Banfield and are playing some superb football. Los Millionarios are joint top on points, Banfield have dropped to midtable following 3 without a win. At home, on their current form, you’d have to fancy River and 1.83 is just juicy enough to be worth it.

Argentinos are the only unbeaten side, Gimnasia are in the automatic relegation places, Argentine football is never straightforward enough for us to be able to say the home side will prevail but 1.8 isn’t a bad price.

Tigre at home to All Boys. Pretty straightforward here, All Boys are shite and Tigre are a good side, with one of the most prolific strikers of the 2010/11 season in Stracqularsi. 2.00 is delectable.

Similarly, Velez to beat Newell’s. I won’t wade through the stats, Velez far too strong. 1.66 skinny but will be fine in any multiple.
In the final fixture between Lanus and Boca, we have an intriguing clash. I like this Lanus side, Valeri, Camoranesi, Regueiro are all top players that have been to Europe and have class and, crucially, experience. Boca have revived the corpse of their early season form with 2 consecutive wins, including a real toughie against Estudiantes. I think this has draw written all over it though. 3.1 is your price.

GodstoneEagle

Olimpo at Colon. Pulverise overs. 2.25 for over 2.5 goals. Olimpo games average 3.38 goals per game this season, and those of Colon 2.88.

First game finished and we were spot on. 1.8 too skinny for Estudiantes who dominated but were held 0-0. DNB is pushed.

Great outfit under JJ Lopez, they play excellent football and I hope Lamela doesn't leave for Europe too soon. If they had a better striker than Pavone then they would be top by 4/5 points.

Sunday League's Huracan FC London find 2,500 Facebook fans in Argentina
Huracan FC London, who play on Clapham Common in south London, have attracted an army of devoted followers... in Argentina.

They may only compete in the Southern Sunday League Division Three but the club are a huge hit in Buenos Aires where they have 2,500 supporters.

Fans in South America use their Facebook page to discuss tactics, team selection and congratulate the team after they win.

Almost all messages are posted in Spanish and according to Facebook ‘likes’, Huracan is the 70th best-supported team in England.

Yesterday, the club were crowned champions after a 4-0 victory and the news was greeted with joy in Argentina.

Player manager Henry May established the club after returning from a spell living in Buenos Aires in 2009, when he became a fan of top Argentinian team Club Atletico Huracan.

He said things started ‘getting crazy’ last August when the London club got a ‘shout out’ on a club radio show in Argentina.

'Within three or four days we had hundreds of Facebook fans. From there things just grew and grew.’

Henry, a 24-year-old teacher from Brixton, south London, said their popularity was boosted yet further when their shirt was seen on TV when it was given away as a prize.

Now the £30 strip has become a ‘must have’ item for its foreign fans.

Huracan FC London are sponsored by Teach First and also have a link with Ensena por Argentina, a similar organisation in Argentina.

Well not a great weekend on the bets but a couple of big priced winners means that the ROI dips, but only to 16.72%.

3 of 9 bets won this weekend, 1 pushed and the other 5 lost, on level stakes, you would have lost .51 units this weekend but it's the first ever negative weekend on the thread and next week we're raring to set this right.

Next weekend's hit comes tomorrow or friday.

If you had to pick one home side out of River or Velez, which one would you go for tonight?

GodstoneEagle
23-04-2011, 11:55 PM
Well if I'd seen that before the game I'd have said Velez. Fact is, one of the biggest shocks in a long time tonight happened in Liniers :D All the journos I know there can't believe it. Caruso Lombardi is virtually insane but he's turning Quilmes round (far too late, definitely going down) and this is an unreal result.

The three shortest pricers go down tonight but the two at big odds win. Unpredictable but good prices, as always.

As per the blog though, didn't pop these in my bet, Velez and Est were too short, River too against such a good side.

Estudiantes not entirely convincing in the CL, seems a high price for the home team.

I was leaning the other way until I knew Veron was out.

Chatted to Ralph Hannah earlier, pretty much the only expert on Paraguayan football but he is worried they peaked too early, winning their superclasico against Olimpia at the weekend was unexpected.

Estudiantes have been progressively worse as the influence of their ex-manager Sabella has worn off and they were stuffed by Velez at the weekend. I expect them to bounce back though, rather than fall into a slump. This is their last chance of silverware this cmapaign and it increased last night with the Brasilerazo.

Watch for the lad Iturbe, he is awesome but won't feature till late for Cerro.
