View Full Version : Rivals?
I've read this site with interest, being a Millwall fan from a family that is split between Millwall fans and Palace fans.
What I want to know is who do you consider your biggest rivals?
a)Millwall
b)Charlton
c)Brighton
d)Manchester United
I know we've been away for a while, but with us looking a good bet for promotion (1 defeat in 14 league games, 7 straight wins), and you looking to finish around mid-table, we may meet next season.
So who out of Millwall and Charlton is the bigger match? Let's face it, Brighton will be lucky to ever play in the top 2 divisions ever again, and Charlton are just too dull to think about.
So come on, who is it?

a)Millwall............Nope
b)Charlton............Snore and they like to think so but I have never had a problem with them. Its like millwall ,you check them out to see how they are doing as another London club but thats it.When we play you (millwall) or Chalton its just a London Derby, thats all.
c)Brighton............Yep,We have a history. d)Manchester United...Most Hated team by all,but not a rival.
You sure your a Millwall fan ? You sound like you walk upright and you have a full brain.
Must be the Palace fans in your family that help you.
------------------
It is an intersting point you've bought up 'Lions fan. Brighton are the traditional enemy, the old derby rivals, their the Seaweed, although you're right we don't ever play them now. However in terms of local rivals it's got to be Millwall. However we also don't like the big three of London, Arsenal, Spurs and chelsea, different fans might have different preferences to which of these team they hate most, personally for me it's cfc. Then there's man utd, based on the cantona kicking incident and all the stuff that followed that. Incidentally who do Millwall see as No1 rivals, West Ham, Palace,Charlton or Chelsea? Also does it depend on which division you're in!

Charlton are just pathetic. I suppose Millwall would be the bigger rivals of the two easily, but don't tell them I said that http://cpfc.org/ubb/wink.gif
I personally don't mind Chelsea at all. I think they play nice football, and of the fans I've met (a lot of my close friends are Chelsea), although they are cocky - and let's face it they have been entitled to be these past few seasons - they also realise when they play crap. What they don't do, is start throwing their toys out of their prams when they get a "disasterous" result, such as a draw at home to Leicester (purely an example). That's the Arsenal mentality, and for that, I dislike them far more. And Spurs for that matter.
Brighton would be the big game. Far bigger than anything else.
As we haven't played them for years though, it would have to be Man U. I detest them with a passion.
On friday, a group of guys walked into a pub (in London) with a santa hat on with "MUFC" written on the front with black marker, and Treble 99 on the back of their home shirt. It had me seething - no other club can do that to me.

What I hate about chelsea is that so may of their fans come from our area, and try and pretend that Croydon is somehow a chelsea area. I've even spoken to one who tryed to claim that he was from Caterham and watching chelsea was "like going down the road and supporting his local side", what cr@p! The amount of Croydon chelsea you see is a disgrace. Also these people have no reson to be cockey, I don't care if their side is amazing, they still are taking the easy option and supporting a glamour club instead of going down the road and watching Palace or whoever their local side is.

If you live or go shopping in Croydon, CPFC's home town, there are Chelsea scum fans everywhere. So in one way, they are our rivals, but in another we will never be playing them for a while so it is pointless.
I have been supporting the club since 1987 and, like many fans in the younger generation, have missed out on the history and don't hate Brighton.
Everyone hates Man U - boring.
Charlton hate us but geographically Millwall are more rivals. Living in the Bromley borough, I know a lot and bump into many Millwall fans in the area and from the Lewisham area. Rivals are meant to be the nearest team and they fit the bill perfectly.
I would love them to go up so we can start off a real South London derby every year. There has to be some interest for the season in this mind numbing division.
We may even beat them off the pitch aswell http://cpfc.org/ubb/wink.gif

For me it's Charlton. Tradition is not Brighton, NONE of our record attendances have been against them and it only became something because of hooliganism in the 70's and 80's. Traditionally Millwall are Palace's enemy dating back years. We've spent more time in the same division as them than the others too (I think!!). My 'elders' tell me that Millwall were around a long time before the seaweed and the record attendance figures proove it.
In terms of geography you'll find that Wimbledon is nearer than Millwall (check the position of Plough Lane) but they have no chance, despite being the highest placed south Londoners.
Chelsea, I too support everyone who plays them - I hate their Croydon fan base that seem to think that Palace aren't good enough for them.
Charlton though - similar size support who despise us, we play them often, local team etc. A good match to exchange a few blows with.

OK how many Charlton and Millwall songs are there?
none
There are at least 3 Brighton songs
Charlton hate us but it is not returned to the same degree. On boxing day I was in the West stand and believe me when they started the 'If you hate Palace stand up' song it was very bitter. Only MUFC(k) and Brighton seem to get the same hatred out of Palace.
As for Chelsea, when I first came to London the first game I saw was at Chelsea, but the pathetic dregs of humanity that followed them put me off instantly, sorry to say that they seem to have gone downhill since then.
Lets be blunt about this Chelsea are the scum team of the south east.

While I respect that Brighton is the target of our traditional and hatred and the feelings are mutual, I do respect that individuals hate other clubs for different reasons (age, location etc) For example I don't live anywhere near Brighton to get stick off their fans on a daily basis, yet I used to live deep in the Charlton catchment area and got heaps of stick from their fans, so as a consequence don't like them very much. As for Millwall I don't like them either because they are racist. Also on the subject of Millwall it really does make me angry that their fans get away with murder, their club should have been thrown out of the league a long time ago due to the actions of their fans, yet we face being thrown out of the league because the actions of one fan. Sorry Millwall: Lions 1885 as I guess you are a reasonable fan and not one of the yobs who follow your club but you did ask.
Now try telling me that I should have no ill feelings towards Charlton and Millwall, you won't get a very good response, I must warn you.
Growing up in Peckham and going to school in NewX, I for one would welcome the chance to play Millwall. It would give me the opportunity to see all my old mates, those that aren't in prison that is.
I realy can't see any real rivalry between us and them more than the usual every one hates them and they don't care attitude. Above that they hate Cardiff and West Ham. For us it's Brighton, Man Utd with Charlton more recently and growing.

Which game would produce the 'best' atmosphere at Selhust? Which away game (allocation of tickets allowing) would see most Palace fans turn out?
There is only one answer - Brighton.
They are our rivals. The fans that were not around for a seaweed derby game, 29,000 home or away, have seen nothing of what real rivalry is about.

I agree with Chocky - if we played Brighton, I reckon a lot of fans that haven't bothered for years will turn out and you could be in for some pretty ugly scnenes before/after the game.

A particularly joyful sight I once saw was in the amusement arcade on the pier, at about 11.00am on a matchday.
A narky little Seaweed upstart unfortunately decided to have a go at a huge, pissed psycho Palace lad.
He picked up the scum and threw him onto a pinball machine. His head hit and smashed the glass at the back and the machine began ringing likre f*ck!

It would probably be the best game in terms of atmosphere and fighting etc v Brighton. But will we ever play them again. Are we gonna forget about any rivals until we play them again? It could be years. By then the Palace fans who enjoyed the Brighton clashes in the 70s will be old men. And everyone else will be saying Brighton who?
Keep the Brighton rivalry on the back burner if we play them but can we have another rival in the meantime please.

The majority of postings on this thread seem to show that seaweed are still the old enemy no1. However factors like that there are so many clubs near by means that we have quite a lot of other rivalries. Also it depends where our fans live. Millwall is an old grudge rivalry however there's never been an exculsive thing with them as they hate everyone. I don't like Charlton's fans at all as they seem to be bitter idiots who just slag us off continously. However I can't really feel any hatred for Charlton as a club. After being beaten on boxing day at Valley(I was also in the West Stand), I was obviously very disappointed but not like with millwall, chelsea or seaweed when it would of been especially gutting to lose to those particular sides, more because of the points we missed out on and how that defeat symbolised the decline of Crystal Palace.

Brighton is really from a time gone by - although I acknowlege them as our rivals due to the past, so I'd love us to play them some time.

Clownton - or should I say who ? - come on be serious. We, Millwall and West Ham all ignore them. They're just there for the amusement value and nothing more.
As written in a footy mag a while ago - Charlton, the team with no rivals - they desperately want all three of us to hate them, and yet we just ignore them completely ! - you can;t get funnier than that http://cpfc.org/ubb/smile.gif

Truth is, who's going to try and sing anti-Charlton songs with the intimidation of B block these days? It's bad enough trying a new song. One fact is though when at half-time the scores were read out and Charlton were 2-0 down to Tranmere there was a big cheer from the Holmesdale.

I am using my sons computer here so if I make any mistakes bear with me.
I dont beleive we have any real issue with Millwall save for the usual team next door rivalry.
Everyone hates Man U.
I have a deep dislike of Charlton which was kindled at a home game in the early 70s when one of our boys was hit by a flying brick in the Holmesdale and another was stabbed outside the ground.
From my point of view our real rivals are Brighton. I was at those games and the trouble didnt start at 9a.m. in Brighton it started on the Friday night and continued up to and throughout the game and in the town after. I was an exuberant teenager in those days but although I have mellowed in middle-age I am sure that if we ever play them again I will be charging around Brighton like a headless chicken.

Historically it's definitely Millwall. Used to really piss me off in the 70's when they'd invade the pitch if they looked like losing to us. Happened at least a couple of times I seem to remember.
Brighton are more recent rivals, but we grew to hate them with a vengeance. Me and a mate even used to go down to Brighton to support the opposition sometimes if Palace weren't palying - and that meant teams like Mansfield etc.

Not just cos there all from Hampshire/Cornwall/etc, Not just cos of CUUntona, not just cos of that Palace boy getting stabbed, but that Feckking Mark Hughes and the fact that had we beaten them at Wembely, Fergie would have been sacked and the world would have been a better place.
Oh, and that "CHAMPIONIES" chant.

Yeah, and what does he get instead - f***ing knighthood. For what? Scraping through a cup final by the skin of his teeth in a season when they finished nowhere in the league? By managing to buy success - i.e. £10m on a full back, £4.5 on a spare goalkeeper?
My old lady could run Man U on that kind of money!

Yes, its one of the "seaweed" here. I know we all hate eachother and all that, but I do have to admit, my best mate is a Palrse fan and we enjoy a bit of banter, especially as we are s*** at the moment and you are so far away.
We have this thing going with Orient at the moment, can you believe it? Orient, the cesspit of East London. I remember the days in the 70's and 80's...most of them good honest battles, on and off the pitch but always in the best possible taste, but Orient, I ask you.
I sincerely hope you come through your trauma's with Noades having stiched you up like kippers... I still remember Palarse fans standing side by side on Fans United day.

I've always found the criteria for rivalry a bit odd. We don't give a toss about Charlton or Millwall and are almost proud to say so. So why desperately try to get the attention of Chelsea etc who would say the same about us? At least Brighton fans feel the same way about us as we do about them.
On the other hand I do really hate Chelsea - the way Croydon's full of them, the way they take over our ground, the way that they wouldn't let us have Vialli off them for free 2 years ago (OK so maybe this is a bit tenuous).
The other teams I dislike are Sheffield United, Sunderland, Portsmouth and Bristol City cos I've had racist abuse off them. Even though Millwall fans are notoriously racist at least the two occasions I've been chased it was because I was Palace...

I pretty sure the rivalry dates back to when Palace and Brighton used to share a ground not too far from East Croydon Station.
Regardless what you think of Brighton fans, there is nothing I hate more than racist tossers.
We've had our fair share. Fortunately,
they always get sh1t back as a result.
It seems that people in the West Country - probably due to their upbringing in incestuous families - are more backward thinking. You mentioned Bristol City. Some of our players got racist abuse this year away to Cheltenham (yes, you may laugh at our Div 3 status).
I would imagine that even you at Palarse are grown up enough to consider this behaviour a disgrace.
Anyway, in addition to our normal rivalries, I'd have to say that many Albion fans also dislike Swansea and Cardiff. Simply because their fans are complete Welsh wa**kers.

Its interesting that most of you have no opinion on CAFC (apart from the rabid few) and seem content that we appear to hate you. This hatred is not testimony to your importance as a rival in our history but more in recognition of your money grabbing conspiracy to promote a South London United. It is well documented that our Directors and a certain Mr Noades were keen on amalgamating the Clubs back in the dark days. Your profiteering ways are well remebered by your Tenant fans (gate receipts continually stolen by CPFC turnstile operators, Palace colours on corner flags for our home games and refusing to switch on floodlights until 'Rent' had been paid.) All through this the Palace Fans were oblivious as we were forced to sell quality players for peanuts. Funny how you Guys believe that you actually helped us during that period. Our Directors must take the blame for knocking us down but you had no excuse to kick us. Prior to that period Palace were not CAFC's 'Rivals' because we had spent over twenty seasons in the top flight while you had been grubbing around with MFC in the 3rd Division for most of that time.
I dislike CPFC for what they done to us and for their Fan's disdain and ignorance. The best show of Fans at the Brighton Fans United day were from CAFC because we remember what it is like to be in your position. Unfortunately you cannot expect our support during your bad times apart from the generous fee paid for Matt Svensson. The reason that Palace are disliked is that they represent the profiteering motives that are killing football. Just because you are now victims of this philosophy you have the audacity to cry Foul and complain that the world aint watching. Our Club has Fans on the Board of Directors, 16,000 season ticket holders, a reasonable stadium and a very strong squad. This has been achieved through the efforts of supporters and the Board of Directors who value and respect the Fan's input. Your Club has a long way to go to resemble CAFC. Our Club is a team comprising Fans, Investors and the Community. If you had kept your eyes open during our tenure at Selhurst Park you may have avoided your current dilemenas. As far as 'bashing up' Brighton, Millwall or CAFC why don't you sad penniless twats grow up.

L'Addique, stop trying to blame Palace fans for what happened to Charlton during the dark days of the eighties for a start and look to what your directors did before you came to Selhurst.
As for "gate receipts stolen by CPFC turnstile operators" and "I dislike CPFC for what they done to us and for their Fan's disdain and ignorance." - What a load of pathetic rubbish.
Also "The reason that Palace are disliked is that they represent the profiteering motives that are killing football." - so Charlton aren't trying to make a profit out of the Millennium dome at the moment aren't they? Maybe they should knock it down and move it to Birmingham after all.
You mention Brighton and their Fans United day, and said "the best show were from CAFC because we remember what it is like to be in your position" - rubbish. You lot went there because you know they hate us and you just wanted to be there to join them in slating us - NOTHING ELSE.
As for "Your Club has a long way to go to resemble CAFC." - alright I'll just go down the fancy dress shop and put on a clown uniform them, how about that? Don't flatter yourself L'addique, even if we are at the bottom of the third division and you are sitting on top of the Premiership, we'll always refer to you as the clowns, end of story.

In addition to Ian's comments above about the Fans United , the other principal reason Charlton fans went down there was an your interest in how Steve Gritt was getting on - don't come all over all righteous about going down there with best intentions.
Also you harp on about your 16,000 season ticket holders. Only the most blinkered Charlton fans won't admit that that figure is due to the season ticket deal offered so that if you go up your ticket price next season will be very reasonable. Many of your current season ticket holders are West Ham & Arsenal etc fans first and foremost who have tagged along for the ride, who feel little towards your club and probably were regularly going to Wimbledon until two seasons ago. Fair enough - it's not that it makes any odds anyway.
One last point - forget all the cobblers about fans on the board etc etc involving the community etc - many, many clubs around the country are run that way (and you call us arrogant!!). Charlton's current "popularity" and status is down to one person, and more accurately his influence and the esteem (or should that read fear of) that the all important media hold him in. You have a lot to thank Michael Grade for.
1f86
The clownton fan above is making the same mistake that all the clown supporters seem to. He is beleives the behaviour of Noades is indicative of the attitude of Palace fans as a whole. In fact many of us don't like Noades and I for one blame his grubby money grabbing ways. The way he treated Clownton may well have been wrong as is the way he has helped Wimbledon and dumped on Palace in recent times.By the way how many would the Clowns be getting every week if they were in our situation? That is how the size of a club's support is really determined, not by how many fair weather fans (half of whom are probabley on freebies etc.) go when things are good.

I can vouch for the Bristol attitude of ten years ago. The common chant from the minority in the East End was "City are white, City are white".
Don't tar them all with the same brush though.
I resent this comment
"It seems that people in the West Country - probably due to their upbringing in incestuous families - are more backward thinking."
I was raised in central Gloucestershire. I am not inbred, nor ill-educated or even backward thinking along with the majority of my schoolfriends. What you have to accept is that the pace of life in the South East is far faster than the West - everything is done in a hurry. That doesn't make you shag your sister, it isn't Woolwich you know.
for me its the usual brighton, millwall, chelsea, charlton in that order for some reason i`ve never been a man u hater i do amire the way they play. but what about teams you can`t stand for no reason at all i`ve always had a massive irrational dislike of Everton although i`ve no conection with them ever.
oh yeah and newcastle "most loyal supporters in the land" every pundit claims my arse! before kweegan came along they were lucky to pull in 15000 at home, twats
Laddique, I have seen the mentality of your supporters, close up and at first hand. Some years ago I went to the Valley, as a guest of one of your supporters, and i might add an invester. WE watched that terrible game where we lost, Armstrong got sent off, but as a bonus it was my 6 year old daughters first away game. I also went with another friend who took his 6 and 10 year old sons with him.
Me and my daughter sat in out Palace shirts, and had to endure these 3 or 4 sub human retarded morons hurling insults and stuff at us. I even asked them to keep it down, only to be threatened. They were obviously jumping at the bit to fight a Palace fan and his 6 year old daughter, so it would give them something to brag about at the DHSS next morning. THAT WOULD NEVER HAPPEN AT SELHURST PARK, it is one of the most family friendly places I know. I also noted, Charlton were not doing particularly well atn the time, and the place was half empty. When Palace aint doing well, we all rally round, when Charlton aint doing well, I doubt there will be enough of you to form a queue at the toilets. Enjoy it while it last LeDick, because as always it wont last, and the Valley will be a very empty place.

Anti-Addick, can I add that I lived in Bristol for three years, and, while I was never a regular at Twerton Park, would regard Bristol Rovers probably as my second team. After all, they did sell us Big Nige... A couple of years ago I had to plead with my (Bristol) bank to waive some sort of fee they'd charged me. I still reckon the reason the Gashead bank clerk let me off was cos she was sorry for us that we'd bought Gareth Taylor off them!
Most Palace fans will regard this as the most difficult season we've ever had to endure. I for one will be delighted if we are still in division 1 next season, particularly if Rovers join us.

I thought I'd drop in and see what went on on your board.
I am amused by the Palace fans that come on our board and tell us how they don't care about Charlton and then whinge and snipe at us. The same seems to be true here. Can't we all accept that because we are relatively close to each other there will always be rivalry (with Millwall also).
Yes there is some bad blood due to what Noades tried to do but that was a problem with both sets of Management at that time. I have no problem with Palace fans. One sat in front of me when you came to the Valley and we spent most of the match having a laugh and a bit of banter. That is what football is all about not the pathetic name calling I see here and on the our board (I include name calling from Charlton fans in this as well.)
Actually most Charlton fans I know (and that is quite a lot) would say that they hope Palace get their problems sorted and they become a successful club. Obviously we don't want to you to beat us. Yes there are some obnoxious fans who support Charlton (i sat beside some at Coventry at the weekend) but that is probably true of all clubs. We can all quote stories of the "I met some really bad.....fans...." (including Palace).
Trouble is at the moment what a number of you say looks like jealousy (even if it is not meant to be)

Kev could you please explain to that self righteous git L'addique, that Noades didnt ask us our opinion on how much rent to charge you when you were at Selhurst, just as Curbishley didnt ask you how much should you buy Svensson for. I agree with you there's good and bad at every club, and I've never considered CAFC scum (a title befitting BHAFC, CFC, MFC, MUFC), only local rivals, but when you here nonsense like L'dick spout's it gives your club a bad name with us.

Cheers Kev Addict for demonstrating not all Charlton fans like L'Addique. I know many decent fans who follow you're club (although many admit to an illogical hatred of Palace).
I disagree with you on the proximity=rivalry thing though. The same can be said for Fulham and QPR who we don't dislike (just as most of us don't dislike Charlton).
I'd rather have some one from south London support Charlton than manU any day.
------------------
This is the odd thing about charlton, all we ever hear is what marvellous friendly warmhearted souls their fans are, what a nice family ground the Valley is etc.In yesterday's Evening Substandard some pompous columnist Matthew Norman or someone was getting all excited about their marvellous fans etc. Yet I bet the majority of us can all recall a totally differant sort of atmosphere to that when we've been to the Valley. Every time I've been there, there have been clownton muppetts looking for aggro, in fact it was the same when a few of us bumped into a coachload of them on the way up to Sheffield for a match as well. On one occasion I witnessed the most disgraceful incident I've ever seen at a football game anywhere, from some of their fans. Also I get sick to death of hearing how marvellous their fans were when clownton were on the verge of extinction a few years back. Whilst some of them did form a political party and start up the 'back to the Valley' compaign, this was only a very small minority, a couple of 1000 tops. That was their weekly support then. Also a Leeds fan I know told me that for their old style play off game with Leeds when they faced relagation if they lost they took a massive 250 to Elland Road. That is for a huge match. That's why our 14,000 every week puts them to shame.

Good posting but I'm not sure I agree with your jealousy comment, we've yo-yoed between the Premiership and the First Division for years now and although Charlton have taken that role for now, I'm sure that Palace will come back to compete at least in the top half of Division One and knock on the door of the play-off positions but not this season.

1st Brighton. As a matter of fact our biggest crowds were often when we played Brighton. I do not recollect us ever getting a big crowd against Charlton (except in play off match, but we would have got a big crowd against anybody for that).
2nd Chelsea (too may supporters in Croydon)
3rd Pompey
4th Charlton
Millwall? I quite like them and are happy to see them win. I even went along to watch them a couple of seasons ago when Palace did not have a game on a Saturday.
