China's Fan named Asian player of the year

SHANGHAI, May 17 (Reuters) - Chinese international defender Fan Zhiyi was named the Asian Football Confederation's 2001 player of the year on Friday.
Completing a hat-trick for China, the AFC awarded the country's national side the title of team of the year, while Fan's team mate Du Wei was honoured as young player of the year.
The versatile Fan, who recently moved from English first division side Crystal Palace to Scottish club Dundee, was instrumental in helping China qualify for the World Cup for the first time. He is currently on loan with Chinese side Shanghai Zhongyuan Huili.
"Fan, whose consistent performances throughout the year swung the votes in his favour...was also cited for the key role he played in China's first-ever World Cup qualification," the AFC said in a statement.
Du caught the eye of former Argentina captain Diego Maradona during a youth tournament in Hong Kong, the statement added.
