A betting controversy is surrounding the appointment of Nick Hewer as the new host of 'Countdown' after a flurry of suspect activity.

It was announced yesterday that 'The Apprentice' star would be the show's new host, beating competition from more likely candidates including Sir Terry Wogan, Giles Brandreth and Rory Bremner.

But a series of high value bets has caused bookmaker Paddy Power to pay out a five-figure sum and they had to slash odds from 100-1 to evens in the space of a week despite Hewer having not previously being linked to the show.

It's said that the deal between Channel 4 and Hewer was only sealed on Tuesday this week, but a spokesperson for Paddy Power told the Mirror: “The secret got out. People clearly knew.”
