CRYSAL PALACE will today complete the near £1.5 million signing of Latvian
striker Andrejs Rubins.
Rubins will fly into London this morning with Latvian coach Gary Johnson and
will complete the deal following a medical and subject to a successful work
permit application.
And the 21-year-old winger could even be thrown into a daunting First
Division debut against leaders Fulham at Craven Cottage tomorrow.
Palace boss Alan Smith, who signed Latvian goalkeeper Alex Kolinko last month
for £500,000, has beaten off a number of Premiership clubs to sign Rubins.
Rubins was labelled “the fastest player I have worked with” by Arsenal boss
Arsene Wenger who pulled out of a £2 million deal in the summer when he
signed French star Sylvain Wiltord for a club record £13 million. Johnson,
who has now masterminded the sale of £6 million worth of players to England
from Latvia over the last two years said: “It is a great signing for Palace.
”I think Rubins is good enough for the Premiership and will prove to be great
value for money.
”A deal was agreed with Arsenal for the player in the summer but it fell
through because they signed Wiltord instead.
”Rubins is probably the best player in Latvian football right this minute and
the Palace fans will love him.”
The most famous of the Latvian arrivals is Southampton’s striker Marian
Pahars whilst Arsenal last month captured centre half Igors Stepanovs for £2
million.

I couldn't find this story on any of the usual transfer sites.Only the same posting on holmesdale on line. Rubins was also on trial at wolves last month but a deal fell through because his club/agent wanted too much money (as reported on footballtransfers.co.uk)

I can't say I know him - doesn't even ring a bell from the Scotland game that I saw last month.

However if you guys are even close to right about how good he is - then I might just have to buy you a beer sometime soon to celebrate http://www.cpfc.org/ubb/wink.gif

Well, I saw it in a press release issued to The Sun yesterday (monday) afternoon - seemed reputable enough. Put it like this, I checked it out with the sports editor and he thought it was kosher. They're running a couple of pars today, I'm told - a bit less than if he'd joined the Arse, but it's a start. Also see back page for Jordan sticking the knife into Venners over England job and Palace. Get in there, Simon!

hahaha nasty but very funny. http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/image/ez_icons/emoticons/roll.gif

The thing that confirms to me that this must be a good signing is because Latvian Eagle says that this Latvian player is totally wicked. Hopefully all the above is true.

I find the story too well written for it not to be true. Apart from the start where it says Crysal Palace!
We shall wait and see what developments there are on Tuesday but it does sound very promising and i'd be delighted if we could sign him.

Maybe years of supporting Place have made me too cynical but it seems a bit inacurate. Since when has a work permit been issued within hours of a player being signed? Unless Lat ia counts as Europe now- possible I suppose as Greece is!!

Can anyone get a player profile? Or at least some description of what he's like? The article calls him both a striker and a winger - which is he? Is he the big centre-forward we're after, or more similarly built to Pahars?

I love the anticipation of having a new Palace hero!

I read this in the "Daily Telegraph" this morning. It also states that Palace are considering a move for Henrik Pederson of Silkeborg valued at 1.5m

Small point.. but without dampening enthusiasm (the player sounds a class act)- if he's a right winger, where does this leave Tommy Black ? He's clearly not the target man we need, so has he been signed as a winger, or a striker ?

Raf

Can't find much about this bloke, except that he's at Skonto Riga at the moment (same place Kolinkas came from). Also he's not an out and out striker, he plays on the left wing.
An Arsenal fan I know reckons he's a pretty decent player, and apparently he shone in the Latvia Scotland game. The same Arsenal fan also reckons he's better than the Latvian they bought, Stepanovs. Sounds good to me, I hope it's happening...

even if we do sign him it will not be soon enough for Foolham....work permit. With any luck he'll get a home debut against Portsmouth.

If he does play on the right we can always move Tommy into the middle where I feel he'll do more damage anyway alongside Pollock and move Mullins back to defense, Austin switching back to right back and Smith dropped. Perhaps.

This Is London

Crystal Palace were today poised to complete the signing
of a Latvian winger described by Arsenal manager Arsene
Wenger as the fastest player he's ever seen.

Palace manager Alan Smith was
due to sign Andrej Rubins for a
fee approaching £1.5 million
subject to a medical and a
successful work permit
application. However, he may
be struggling to complete the
deal in time for the player to
appear in tomorrow's Division
One match against leaders
Fulham at Craven Cottage.

The 21-year-old from Skonto Riga was given trials by
Arsenal and Tottenham in the summer and Latvia's
national coach Gary Johnson believes Palace will be
signing yet another bargain from Skonto following their
£500,000 purchase of Alex Kolinko.

The goalkeeper made his Nationwide League debut
against Birmingham at the weekend.

Johnson, the former Cambridge United manager and
Watford youth academy director, said: "Rubins will turn
out to be a terrific buy for Palace and the fans will love
him.

"This is a great signing for Palace because I believe Rubins
is good enough for the Premiership. Arsene Wenger told
me he was the fastest player he had ever worked with and
a £2m deal fell through only when Arsenal signed Sylvain
Wiltord for £13m."

Nottingham Forest, Bolton and Wolves had Rubins
watched 10 days ago when Latvia crashed 4-0 at home to
Belgium in their World Cup qualifier in Riga. Rubins had a
quiet game that night but the electrifying pace which gave
Scotland a World Cup scare last month was enough to
convince Smith to take a gamble.

Johnson is delighted that Rubins is set to become the latest
Latvian star to make his name in England.

Southampton striker Marian Pahars is now rated one of
the best strikers in the Premiership and recently Arsenal
spent £2m on centre-back Igors Stepanovs.

Londoner Johnson added: "It is important for Latvian
football to have as many players playing in the hardest
league in the world because it will toughen them up for
international games."

Seems like great news. Lets hope it is an upward turn in our fortunes!

Incidently, I'm wondering who this Gary Johnson is. I take it he is British, and this probably explains why so many Latvians are reaching our shores of late. I see he is described as being the Latvian national coach, but he seems to be brokering bringing every Latvian international Skonta Riga player to England (Have they any players left?).

Considering English football now houses so many of these Latvians, are Latvia becoming the new Norway?

Also are Skonta Riga the only decent club side in Latvia. I can't remember them ever being in the Champions League?

Looks like Jordans really putting his money where his mouth is. It sounds like an outstanding buy, you can't go wrong buying a player with electric pace and who can take the ball with him! He's only 21 aswell and signed on a four year contract according to Sky Sports teletext.

Let's hope we're still in the market for a big centre-forward.This is a very exciting buy,Rubins has the potential to be the biggest Palace hero since Lombardo.Certainly a bigger buy than Ruddock.

18-10-2000, 03:31 AM
It appears to me that Rubins is the playmaker that Jordan says he wanted so i expect we will still get a big centre-forward (Pedersen?) in the near future too. With a better performance at Birmingham and now this news hopefully we can begin to move forward.

Don't know if they are the only decent(?) side (probably). They did loose to Chelsea in the Champions League Prelim round last year.
