View Full Version : Rubins Signs
According to Simon Jordan on Talksport five minutes ago Rubins has signed this afternoon (Jordan quoted 2million) and is currently having a medical. He has already secured a work permit and may play tomorrow, if Alan Smith picks him.

I have to say this is the most eargely awaited signing i wanted since we signed Matt Jansen and we know what a gem he was.
Andjers Rubins is without doubt a quality signing and i praise Smith for signing him.
He will be a top dog for us.
Welcome to Selhurst and Palace Andjers!

Story is now on page 312 on BBC Ceefeax.
It says:
Crystal Palace have signed Latvian winger Andrej Rubins from Skonto Riga for £1.5m on a four-year contract.

Great signing, this boy is the bizzo, and not an overweight carthorse, like one or two other of our recent signings. This is a future £10 million player (transfer system permitting), so get ready to sell him in 18 months.
Apparently, he (Rubo) doesn't speak a word of English, so him and Al should communicate fine.

If he doesn't speak English at all, won't that mean that our venerable coaches won't be able to explain what they want from him?
Hurrah!

This is fantastic news!! Hopefully he can service the strikers with at least 300 balls a match but that still doesn't guarentee us scoring http://www.cpfc.org/ubb/wink.gif

I am very excited at the prospect of seeing Rubins tearing down the wing.Wenger reckons he's the fastest player he's seen (does that include Overmars)well done Jordan.Lets score some goals!!

Sorry to be a damp squid, but what use do we have for a winger if there is nobody that can score in the middle! Or let us hope he,s us,ed as a Striker.

I thought squids by their very nature were damp?

I must say I find all this blind optimism very worrying. I'm not going to slag the guy off (I have never given any player abuse from the stands), but I will certainly wait until I have seen him for a few games. Where is he going to play? Striker? If so then that is a worry. We need a striker and buy a winger... Will he play on the right wing? Great we lose Tommy Black... Is he going to play on the left wing? Good, he will be a useful team player in the position, but we STILL won't have the playmaker and striker that Jordan and Smith have been harping on about!
Funny how he cost us £2,000,000 too. Perhaps if our brain dead chairman didn't tell the whole world that we wanted to spend £4,000,000 on two players, we could have gotten him for nearer to £1,000,000 as was originally quoted.
WE NEED A LEFT BACK. WE NEED A PLAYMAKER. WE NEED 2 STRIKERS.
Sort it out Mr Chairman. You do pick the team after all.

Burr, i presume that Rubins probably is the playmaker Jordan has referred to. - A playmaker can still play on the left or maybe he'll be used in the centre behind the strikers.
I would expect we will still get a new striker in the fairly near future.
Don't use the signing of a very highly rated young player to make another attack on Jordan who has just spent another 2M to try to improve our club.

It certainly will be interesting to see where he plays. For me a playmaker should always be a highly skilled player with superb passing skills and vision, who is positioned centrally on the pitch. Rubins doesn't sound like that, but maybe he can do the job - here's hoping. Either way we will certainly have a strong midfield with good depth.

Fair comment I suppose, but I just find it crazy how he announces to the world what he plans to spend, before he actually buys the players. The guy comes out with statements like "With 4 more players we will be have a top 10 finish" and "We need a good striker and playmaker - 2 million pounds on each will get us the players we need". It seems like he has this golden figure in his head and should we spend a certain amount of money and get in so many players, then we will do well. Football just doesn't work like that. He doesn't seem to realise you could spend £15,000,000 on players and still get a sh*t team. With the way he thinks Valerian Ismael will soon be back here, after all he cost a club record fee, so he has to be good...

If he is being compared to Marc Overmars then I am excited. That sort of pace destroys defences whether used out wide or up the middle. Thierry Henry and Overmars are both wingers but I wouldn't mind either of them up front. He also wears 10 for Latvia which suggests that he can play up front.
Give the boy a chance, if he's the fastest player we've had since Don Rogers then I'd be more than happy!

Week / ten days ago SJ said that we would pay £2m for a play maker, now we pay £2m for Rubins and SJ is accused of telling clubs what we would apy. As Rubins already has his work permit - which takes a week or so - perhaps SJ had already sealed the deal when he said this. May be not, but perhaps that's why he got the price right. ( This is the case is the striker on the way as well?)
Also, picking up a point earlier - Wenger said he's the fastest player he has ever worked with - so to me that means yes- faster than Overmars. I just hope he gives our strikers a head start if he wants them in the box!

Well if he is as good as we all hope he is and is worthy of the premiership. We have him on a 4 year contract then after a couple of years we might get some really big bucks for him from higher clubs (like blackpool at the rate we're going) although if he is that good the fans wont let him go!!! We can all hang on to his foot
