Forget about gold medals my only concern will be he returns fully fit for the start of the real stuff, bad enough the he will miss a large amount of pre-season time while this jolly up is going on.

Good for Palace in that he has a real incentive for the rest of the year to shine.

Good for Palace in that if he gets into the team and plays well he will come back more confident and potentially worth more if sold.

Bad in that he could lose all his summer, be knackered and not even make the team or worse get injured.

Good luck to him.

Palace youngsters Nathaniel Clyne and Wilfried Zaha have been named on the long-list for the GB football team for the 2012 London Olympics.

Both players have enjoyed fantastic seasons so far with Clyne winning the Championship's Player of the Month award for October and Zaha scoring five goals and earning rave reviews for his performances in the Carling Cup.

Zaha has already expressed his delight on his twitter feed, saying: "Nominated for Team GB olympic football team :) #buzzing".

Both players have until mid-January to confirm whether they wish to be considered for inclusion in the final squad.

In the past I'd have agreed, but hardly any of the Olympic sports are amateur these days. Athletics certainly isn't any more. I think football is done well at the Olympics with largely young squads and a few over age players. It gives some of the young up and coming players a taste of a big international competition.

England isn't a country according to the UN, GB is.

It's just a few sports that allow us to compete individually. In FIFA the other exceptions are The Faroes (part of Denmark) and another that I can't remember.

Probably should be in an Olympic thread somewhere but agree with the above. The Olympics should be the pinnacle of the sports involved, which it is for athletics, swimming, sailing, hockey etc.

For golf, tennis, football etc it isn't the biggest thing they should win so shouldn't be in it. They are only there to attract more sponsorship and viewers.

i dont mind 'big' sports being in the Olympics but id like to see them try to do something original in them. For example football could be a 32 team random draw competition, tennis could be a mixed sex team tournament and golf could play as teams using stableford scoring system.

also for some countires the Olympics is considered the pinnacle. I rememember seeing a article about Diementiava (sp) that said her Olympic gold was considered more improtant in Russia than Sharapova and Myskinas grand slams. Not sure how true this this.

Just been reading an article in todays Daily Mail which states that Nathaniel Clyne has made the cut for the next stage of the selection process for the Olympic team.

No mention of Wilf though but would imagine he would have made it too surely, it was cut from 119 players to 98, will eventually be cut down to a squad of 18.

Crystal Palace are delighted to announce that Wilfried Zaha has been called up to Team GB by Stuart Pearce.

The call up caps a remarkable season for the highly rated youngster, where a string of blistering performances saw the youngster voted the npower Championship young player of the year for the 2011/12 season.

Wilf has been selected as part of Pearce's provisional 35, with the squad expected to be whittled down to its final 18 and four standbys on July 7. A product of the Palace academy, Zaha burst onto the scene in 2010, scoring on his debut against Leicester City. Now the winger is likely to join up with Craig Bellamy after the Liverpool star let it slip last month that he had been selected.

I hope Pearce doesn't take the PC route on this team and although, it's a GB team, the English players selected should be those who may make a break through into the full England team in the next 3-4 years.

Without wishing to make an overly politically correct point, Zaha is exactly the type of player that a Team GB should incorporate. Aside from the fact that he clearly has the game to entertain, he was born in the Ivory Coast, moved over here and made it his home, very much the product of our academy and the London area, he should be in the last squad. Simple as that.

I see somone has edited to replace Moses with Zaha now :p :D
Can see their point about Butland not playing - but it was supposed to be to ensure they all got a rest. He was doing all the training for the Euros and will do all the training for the Olympics. Not sure when he gets a break, still doesn't matter to Palace!

Marvin Sordell is a surprise inclusion in the Great Britain Olympic football squad which Stuart Pearce will announce on Monday. The 21-year-old striker made only three appearances for Bolton Wanderers last season following a £3m transfer from Watford in January but has scored two goals in seven appearances for Pearce's England Under-21 side.

Other more familiar names scheduled to be announced include Chelsea's Daniel Sturridge, Josh McEachran and Ryan Bertrand, Manchester United's Tom Cleverley, Swansea City's Joe Allen, Arsenal's Aaron Ramsey, Blackburn Rovers' Jason Lowe and Birmingham City's Jack Butland.

There is no place for Sunderland's Connor Wickham or Liverpool's Jonjo Shelvey but Arsenal's Kieran Gibbs and Tottenham Hotspur's Steve Caulker could be included alongside the much-coveted Crystal Palace pair Nathaniel Clyne and Wilfried Zaha. Although born in Abidjan in the Ivory Coast, Zaha has elected to represent England at international level.

Richards might play at centre back though. The squad will only have 18 men in it, so with 14 playing in most games and a second keeper included, all outfield players would be likely to get game time at some point.

Let's hope they get the nod.

5 full Welsh internationals and 2 full England players. To be fair you couldn't have Bellemy, Giggs, Beckham and Zaha on the wings.

A bit surprised that Clyne wasn't selected as he can deputise at left back in an emergency.

In the end you had to trust that he has got it right as he has watched all these players in the same way that you must trust DF and the coaching team as they watch the players every day while we watch then every couple of weeks.

Dissapointing but at least we will have a fully rested Zaha for the start of the season.

Strange thing is that for the U21's which was selected by Pearce, Zaha had a great debut and looked really promising. He said he 'picked the team on form' but given Zaha won young player of the year in the championship last year that clearly is not the case.

It's surprising when you look at some of the names included in the squad, but from a Palace perspective, at least he'll be fresh for us and won't have had any outside influence to turn his head, as so often happens when players mix away from their usual teammates.

The day that **** Pearce becomes England manager is the day I give up on them. Clueless, useless prick.

I am now officially hoping that team GB go out as soon as possible with the heaviest defeats possible. **** 'em :veryangry

Wilf has probably played more 1st team games than 2 or 3 of these prem squad players put together who are never gonna make at there clubs stuffed with ready made foreign imports.

OTT reaction, Zaha was not in competition with Sordell for a place. From that squad the likeliest player to play on the left is Scott Sinclair at present a far better player than Zaha.

Unlucky Wilf! Don't hope that players get injured, but was so hoping that he would make it - would have been amazing to watch him for GB, let alone for him!

Next season, he can show them what they were missing!!!!!!!

Stuart Pearce once again proving that he's an inept manager. Surprise surprise.

edit. If somehow GB manage to win a medal, I will retract this statement.

Did we really expect a Palace player to be in the squad??? Pearce is a twat and probably doesn't even know where SP is

I'm afraid yes and no.This is almost certainly true. It does not however disprove the fact that Stuart Pearce is a clueless twat who should be kept away from any form of professional sport until the End of Days.

Well done pearce Wilf will probably choose Ivory Coast now as 'Physco' is manager of the U21's

The FA must be proud

It is good news for us, as a couple of good performances from Wilf would have greatly increased the immediate demand for him. He is so integral to our prospects next season that we cannot afford to lose him just yet.

I have no interest in the GB team, the Olympics generally, and our players getting injured in a pointless game of football that no-one really cares about

It's quite amusing how seriously Pearce is taking this, when no-one else really cares about footie at the Olympics. I think Pearce sees this is as his big chance, when the reality is it will be his only chance to manage anything resembling a "senior" international side.

At least his press conferences will be funny. Pearce trying to convince everyone that it really is important
