BBS prediction/fantasy competitions have added some fun to lots of other sporting events, so I thought I’d start a thread for the Olympics. I hope this doesn't tread on anyone's toes; if it does, please say and I will happily pull the thread!

My suggestion is that we each pick a squad of 15 medal hopes. I then keep track of how many gold medals these picks win. Highest score wins the competition.

Simple enough?

The 15 must be constituted as follows.

Athletics (including track/field, marathon and walk)
2 Brits
2 Others

Cycling (including track, BMX, mountain biking and road racing)
1 Brit
1 Other

Swimming (including pool and open water)[/U]
1 Brit
1 Other

Tennis
1 pick for the individual men's or individual women's competition

Football
1 pick for either the men’s or the women’s competition

Team sports – handball, hockey, volleyball, water polo only
1 pick for one of the above sports

Other sports (can be anything not covered above, with the exception of basketball because this would make things too easy, but please specify sport and nationality when posting)
2 Brits
2 Others

As a tiebreaker, please also guess the winning time in the men's 100m final (Usain Bolt's world record is 9.58 seconds). Nearest guess wins.

Deadline for entries is the finish of the Opening Ceremony on 27 July.

So, for example, to show how easy this can be, you might post:

Athletics
Chambers
Ohorogou
Bolt
Blake

Cycling
Pendleton
Cancellara

Swimming
Adlington
Phelps

Tennis
Andy Murray

Football
GB men

Team sports
Russia, men’s volleyball

Other sports
Daley – diving
Tweddle – gymnastics
Smith, USA – archery
Jones, AUS – modern pentathlon

Tiebreaker - 9.80 seconds

You then hope that the above picks win lots of gold medals.

The BBC website has a fairly decent list of athletes if you need some help or just want choose some names at random.

A quick bump with four and a bit days to go. It was also suggested to me that I include a tiebreaker - now added.

It's just a bit of fun. If you're stuck for names, another place to look might be

Is anyone in?

I’m up for this but a few clarifications on the rules would be helpful
• Do we have to specify the event? So for example if I were to put Usain Bolt, could I just leave it at that as I assume that he will run in both the 100m and 200m, or do I have to specify one of the events too?
• Do gold’s won as part of a team count if I pick the individual? So again if I was to Usain Bolt, and the Jamaican’s win the relay gold would I pick up points for that too?
• Are field events allowed in the athletics?

No, yes and yes in that order.

You pick competitors in the above sports and he/she scores 1 point for every gold medal in his/her hands on 12 August regardless of whether he/she won it as an individual or as part of a team.

So, for example, in my team, Usain Bolt can score up to 3 points from his 100m, 200m and 4x100m events. Likewise, Victoria Pendleton up to 3 points from the team sprint, individual sprint and keirin. And so on.
