1st one hasn't gone through to board - hoping this will.
SIMON RODGER's TESTIMONIAL
If the opponents for this game are, as we believe, as yet undecided, please take strong account of the following:
1) Brighton are unquestionably Palace's biggest and longest standing rivals. I attended the last league game in 1989, we love playing you and would love to do so again soon.
2) We have not played you for years in any game (lat one a pre-season friendly I believe).
3) On to the serious stuff - without any effort AT ALL from the testimonial organising committee you could get 1,000 Brighton fans +, plus extra Palace fans for this game. More money for Rodger.
4) With judiciously placed ads in local papers and programmes, message boards and chat sites witha 'Palace v Brighton, its back' theme you could do much bettter than this for the player.
Any Palace fans who want this game, please post this elsewhere or on your forums, or lobby the club. It would mean more to us to attend this game than anyone else.

You lot only brought about 50 fans to the last friendly!...But it would be nice to "play" you again.

The Seaweeds are our longest standing rivals..I think it is fitting that our longest serving player should get them for his testimonial.
With all due respect, Tooting Gull, I think Simon Rodger has a slightly "bigger" team lined up. Last I heard it was Bognor Regis.
I'm sure Jolly used to go to school just outside Brighton........

I'm sure that Simon would be delighted with the Police bill for a match like this. Plus, the attendance would be cr@p, don't delude yourselves that Chelsea or Arsenal wouldn't bring far more.
Everyone is thinking of themselves instead of what this is meant to be - a testamonial for Simon Rodger, not a relapse to the violent 70's.
"Biggest and longest standing", what rubbish. Charlton have much bigger support and Brighton didn't wander in until the 70's - it was Millwall for 60 years before BHA.

More to the point though - that would be more preferable to us as fans and more profitable at the gate - as Simon has suggested himself, the opposition will hopefully be made up of ex-Palace players such as Lombardo, Martyn and Wright.
Anti, Why do you think there'd be trouble at a friendly. We used to have loads of pre season friendlies and I can never remember trouble at any of them.
And if you think Arsenal fans would bother turning up for you you are having a laugh,

AD, I'm not talking about real Arsenal fans, i'm talking about those South London defectors that get their one a season chance. To cap it they get to see 'their' team possibly beat Palace so they can justify why they chose them over us. Don't deny they don't exist because i'm talking about glory hunters and there are loads of them.
So if there's no trouble at a Palace Brighton match then whats all the fuss about? I see plenty of anger at Palace v Charlton games.
All these older fans talk of 'immense hatred', 'taking the pier' and 'charges at each other across the park'. Sounds a load of BS to me.

Oh hell, not Brighton again..I would have thought Simon is deserving of somebody way above Brightons level. The club should consider a top English side at least. My vote would go to a top European side PSV owe us a friendly. One was planned when the new floodlights were put in by Philips seven years ago (PSV are largely owned by Philips as they grew out of the companies sports and social club) But the F.A. blocked it because we had a fixture backlog at the time. Barcelona would be nice, we both play in Red n' Blue and if the Trust can pull off all their plans we can have a stake in the club as most Barca' fans have in theirs.
If a tatty old third division side showed imagination and managed to get the Great Real Madrid side here in 1962. Todays Palace should go for it. Not only would it show our appreciation for Jolly, but it would be a great lift for us all.

I think its a top idea for the following reasons, 1) the big crowd would give jolly a nice little earner, 2) it would show the younger fans what real scum look like, 3) a 6-0 thrashing for us would finish off a good days work
1862
According ot your own Seagulleater he hails from Shoreham. Whatever. I would like to see the game, and have therefore said so. I would have thought the point is what gets the most money for the player in terms of crowd, and if one or two of you choose to sneer at us, there are plenty of Premier teams who would do exactly the same to you. How many would Chelsea bring to such a game if they had European games the Wed before and after, and Premier games at the weekend? Given that fact, I can't think of any other club that would bring more fans, although I can't speak for what will get Palace fans out of the pub. If not, we'll just have to wait til next season...

As much as I hate to agree with a Spunkgull he/she/it has a valid point.
A Palace/Brighton(spit) match, promoted in the way that stoked the fires of hatred and malice, would bring in a bumper crowd
the one way to FILL the stadium would be Lazio with Lombardo as opponents, but that aint likely !

When I last spoke to him I suggested the Fa cup final side of 90 to be the team, Jolly said he was thinking of a top Italian side, I will ask again this week as it was a while back, watch this space

Some major heluciagenic drugs are being taken if you think Juve or Barca or Lazio or PSV are coming to Selhurst.
I heard this happened the other day....
Simon Jordan: "Hi Juventus? I was wondering if you would come and play in Simon Rodgers testimonial match"
Roberto Bettaga: "Simon who?"
SJ: "Simon Rodger, midfield lynchpin of the Palace team for ten years"
RB: "I thinka you havea the wronga number"
Yes, you do.

I also heard that it was a big possibility that it would be a team of old Palace players who have played during Simon Rodger's time as a Palace player.

Apart from the last one down there when a bike mysteriously found it's way through a pub window where some of my mates were drinking before the game. As well as the friendly reception at the station after the game.
Admittedly I saw none myself at the Priestfield when we last played you.

I don't know about that Anti
If I got a chance for a Palace /Brighton game I would jump at it.
Had some great times at those games (And not so great)I feel we would get a decent crowd as well and for the younger lot they could see what real rivals are.
My final attempt, and then I'll leave you in peace. For Denis Irwin's testimonial, it is no exageration to say United could have got ANY TEAM IN THE WORLD to play that game. They would all have been flattered to be asked, and would all have found the time to play. Irwin knew what was what, and chose City, who in a playing sense are not fit to lace United's boots, and got a 45,000 crowd.
Palace are not in that position anyway. Save yourselves the embarrassment of being turned down by Lazio (I'm sure they'll do it very gracefully,('no room in the calendar, sorry') pick your rivals and promote it properly.

oh how I miss the heady days of the seventies. We even used to go down to brighton on non Palace days to support the away team, such was our rivalry.

Campaign? it would be the lowest gate of the season. Why would anyone want to travel to watch a conference side take a thrashing from Palace is beyond me. But then again conference football is known to be of a higher standard than div 3.
