Any bright sparks out there able to answer this...
Great Britain comprises of Wales, Scotland & England.
The United Kingdom comprises of Great Britain and Northern Ireland
So why does Team GB include althletes from Northern Ireland ?
Not that thats the issue...but shouldn't it be Team UK ?
I've asked many people and tried a bit of internet research, without any luck
Thanks

The full team name is Great Britain and Northern Ireland. That doesn't answer the question. Also, if you are correct, this means eg Mark Cavendish shouldn't be in "Team GB".

Wondered the same myself to be honest.
But I think Great Britain sounds better than United Kingdom anyway.

thanks but that doesn't answer the question.
In fact nothing has so far.
It's called Team GB. So why include N.I. ?
If it includes N.I. there is a name for the countries of Great Britain AND Northern Ireland and it's called the United Kingdom
So why not Team UK ?

So its; "Team GB - including Northern Ireland , if they feel like it"

United kingom is the descriptive
Great Britain is the name of the Island and the political entity that comprises England Wales and Scotland.
Its not Team UK because it would be like France calling itself 'team republic' or Australia 'team commonwealth'
I think they just ignore N. Ireland.
