They only set a WR as it is the first time the race has been run. China broke it second later and again in the next round.

Not quite - this event has been in the world champs for a while now. This is just it's first appearance in the Olympics.

Ah ok, and the London track is quick so that explains why.

The chinese are fast becoming my most hated country over the americans in the olympics.

This sport (or at least this event) is completely ****ed. Medals should not be decided by officials after the event.
Very dissatisfied!

They get relegated behind the team they were up against in that particular round - hence why GB got put down to eighth as in that heat they "beat" the team now in seventh.

Same as the athletics though. Both teams broke the rules. End of

Yeah, it just seems flawed to me. Not sure how else they'd do it mind.

How come the men got away with their start rider, Hindes, falling over and gaining a re-start?

Because the cause was mechanical failure I think.

He did it deliberately in order to get the re-start.
Re. the relegations of the chinese and british teams in the women's sprint - I think it is a ridiculous rule. Completely pointless.
Pendleton (& yes I'd love to jump her bones) gains no real competitive advantage by passing her partner early. She actually has to work harder in having to ride with no slipstream for longer.
I can only think the UCI introduced these rules (was in the world champs also) to have a bit of 'jeopardy' in the race - a bit like the baton handover in athletics. Whilst there is a need for a baton and an orderly handover zone in athletics there is absolutely no need for it in cycling.
Cycling fans want to see racing not the ruminations and quandries of UCI offiicials - nothing dodgy or problematic is obviated by this rule. Just let them set the time however they want as a threee - no need for this whatsoever.
Fairplay to the chinese women's conduct at the medal ceremony however, regardless of where my eyebrows may be regards chinese women athletes.
At the end of the day rules is rules, however stupid, and team GB have made a proper error here when you consider their reputed meticulous planning.

I totally agree, they are travelling round the track at silly speeds and they have to handover in a 30m zone which isnt very well marked, both china and us have been disqualified for doing something they gain absolutely no advantage from, its made the event a bit of a farce.

Yes, basically Germany were handed the gold medal over two nations that were better than them.
Having said that, I thought we were very lucky in the men's to be allowed a restart. I thought I heard it wasn't mechanical - he merely lost balance and couldn't correct the wobble.

Just wondering - being the quicker rider, doesn't she gain an advantage for passing early as she doesn't get stuck behind a slower rider for an extra few metres after she has the slingshot off the bend?

It's not a case of being a 'slower rider'. The advantage of being in the slipstream is huge on the track.
It's timing in this case which is their error. I appreciate your point about coming off the corner - you need to put some legs in to the corner in order to maintain speed, which actually means acceleration in terms of velocity.
It's not material though in this case and I really don't understand the rationale behind the rule - however, they should've raced to it.

Ok, I just don't really get the first point. Say for example Pendleton is faster than Varnish - Pendleton can only go at Varnish's top speed when behind but can go faster when ahead so passing early means more time at top speed? Sorry for asking again, just seems strange.

Most of a track-cyclist's energy at the short end of distances is expended on cutting through air resistance.
Point is she gains nothing by coming out early.
They should just let the team sprint go how ever they want to. It's a pointless rule - nonetheless one they knew about and should've adhered to.
As a cycling fan I'm more annoyed about a pointless rule rather than the GB situation. Two best teams were GB & China. Germany won gold by default and through UCI commisioners adjudicting over pointless shit.
Sport lost.
