That said, words that stand out are from the wonderful song entitled "Hello Dolly" :

I was going to pick a line from one of my favourite songs (Paint It Black by The Rolling Stones) but I couldn't decide the best line...
I see a red door and I want it painted black.
No colors anymore, I want them to turn black.
I see the girls walk by dressed in their summer clothes.
I have to turn my head, until my darkness goes.
I see a line of cars and their all painted black.
With flowers and my love both never to come back.
I see people turn their heads and quickly look away.
Like a newborn baby it just happens every day.
I look inside myself and see my heart is black.
I see my red door and I want to paint it black.
Maybe someday I'll turn around and not have to face the facts.
It's not easy facing up when your whole world is black.
No more will my green sea now turn a deeper blue.
I could not foresee this thing happening to you.
If I look hard enough into the setting sun.
My love will laugh with me 'till the morning comes.
I wanna see your face painted black.
Black as night, black as coal.
I wanna see the sun, blotted out of the sky.
I wanna see you paint it black

And Time, by Tom Waits:
"They all pretend they're orphans,
And their memory's like a train,
You can see it getting smaller as it pulls away,
And the things you can't remember,
Tell the things you can't forget,
That history puts a saint in every dream."
mmmmmmm, Downtown Train, again by Tom Waits
Outside another yellow moon
Has punched a hole in the nighttime, yes
I climb through the window and down to the street
I'm shining like a new dime
The downtown trains are full with all of those Brooklyn girls
They try so hard to break out of their little worlds
Well you wave your hand and they scatter like crows
They have nothing that will ever capture your heart
They're just thorns without the rose
Be careful of them in the dark
Oh, if I was the one you chose to be your only one
Oh baby can't you hear me now, can't you hear me now
Will I see you tonight on a downtown train
Every night it's just the same, you leave me lonely now
I know your window and I know it's late
I know your stairs and your doorway
I walk down your street and past your gate
I stand by the light at the four-way
You watch them as they fall, oh baby, they all have heart attacks
They stay at the carnival, but they'll never win you back
Will I see you tonight on a downtown train
Where every night, every night it's just the same, oh baby
Will I see you tonight on a downtown train
All of my dreams they fall like rain, oh baby on a downtown train
I thought that if you had an acoustic guitar, then it meant that you were....
A protest singer.
Well I can laugh about it now but at the time it was terrible.

Back to Paul Weller:
'I might get it wrong sometimes, but I come back in style.'
Then there's the Bowie song I can't stop playing at the moment:
'Don't you wonder sometimes, about sound and visionnnnnnnn.'
Matov's choice of the Wichita Lineman is a good one. The funny thing about the song is that it was written by someone (forgotten the name) well known for his lefty credentials, while Glenn Campbell is a typical conservative southerner. Apparently, they used to have huge political rows in the studio.

Another classic line form Mr Weller:
I first felt a fist, and then a kick
I could now smell their breath.
They smelt of pubs and Wormwood Scrubs
And too many right wing meetings
Another current fave.. Hurricane by Dylan - a whole story put to music (only the first of 11 verses)
Pistol shots ring out in the barroom night
Enter Patty Valentine from the upper hall.
She sees the bartender in a pool of blood,
Cries out, "My God, they killed them all!"
Here comes the story of the Hurricane,
The man the authorities came to blame
For somethin' that he never done.
Put in a prison cell, but one time he could-a been
The champion of the world.

There's just so many..........
.....but the first one that came to mind was What's so funny 'bout peace, love and understanding? by Brinsley Schwarz.
For those of you who've got any Brinsleys stuff, I bet you've not played it for eons. I know I haven't. Get it out now! If you understand my meaning.
Also Cat Stevens' Island albums are chocker with great lines - especially in Father & Son from Tea for the Tillerman.
Mind you, given time, I reckon I could find 1,000 great lines - just from my own record collection. It's just very difficult to pick an out-and-out favourite.

Whenever I've brought his name up before, i've been met with polite silences.

Sorry about this:
Keep you doped with religion and sex and TV
And you think you're so clever and classless and free
But you're still ******* peasants as far as I can see
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be
So now I'm goin' back again,
I got to get to her somehow.
All the people we used to know
They're an illusion to me now.
Some are mathematicians
Some are carpenter's wives.
Don't know how it all got started,
I don't know what they're doin' with their lives.
But me, I'm still on the road
Headin' for another joint
We always did feel the same,
We just saw it from a different point of view,
Tangled up in blue.
You don't need a weather man
To know which way the wind blows
I'd beg for some forgiveness
But begging's not my business
Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery
None but ourselves can free our minds
Have no fear for atomic energy
Cause none of them can stop the time
How long shall they kill our prophets
While we stand aside and look
Some say it's just a part of it
We've got to fulfill the book
Won't you help to sing, these songs of freedom
Cause all I ever had, redemption songs, redemption songs, redemption songs
Rockets, moon shots
Spend it on the have nots
Money, we make it
Fore we see it you take it
&
Natural fact is
I can't pay my taxes
Crime is increasing
Trigger happy policing
Panic is spreading
God know where we're heading

Nothing you can sing that can't be sung
Nothing you can say but you learn how to play the game.

Been thinking about this for a few days and it ain't easy to come up with one favourite or even one verse. First thought it would have to be something from the 60s - especially from The Who, though a fav of them is from the 70s "Woke up in a Soho doorway, a policeman knew my name". In the end, the 70s won in the shape of Bruce Springsteen so here are all the words from "Born to Run"; never got tired of hearing this...knock out
In the day we sweat it out in the streets of a runaway American dream
At night we ride through mansions of glory in suicide machines
Sprung from cages out on highway 9,
Chrome wheeled, fuel injected
and steppin' out over the line
Baby this town rips the bones from your back
It's a death trap, it's a suicide rap
We gotta get out while we're young
`Cause tramps like us, baby we were born to run
Wendy let me in I wanna be your friend
I want to guard your dreams and visions
Just wrap your legs 'round these velvet rims
and strap your hands across my engines
Together we could break this trap
We'll run till we drop, baby we'll never go back
Will you walk with me out on the wire
`Cause baby I'm just a scared and lonely rider
But I gotta find out how it feels
I want to know if love is wild
girl I want to know if love is real
Beyond the Palace hemi-powered drones scream down the boulevard
The girls comb their hair in rearview mirrors
And the boys try to look so hard
The amusement park rises bold and stark
Kids are huddled on the beach in a mist
I wanna die with you Wendy on the streets tonight
In an everlasting kiss
The highway's jammed with broken heroes on a last chance power drive
Everybody's out on the run tonight
but there's no place left to hide
Together Wendy we'll live with the sadness
I'll love you with all the madness in my soul
Someday girl I don't know when
we're gonna get to that place
Where we really want to go
and we'll walk in the sun
But till then tramps like us
baby we were born to run

Ha! I've got a duo going with my eldest - at bedtime when I pack him off to bed I go "Up the stairs, mister" and he responds "Eat y'self fitter" - the mighty Fall.

My choices are:
1. Dylan
.....They say that patriotism is the last refuge
To which a scoundrel clings.
Steal a little and they throw you in jail,
Steal a lot and they make you king.
2. Marley
....Until the philosophy which hold one race
Superior and another inferior
Is finally and permanently discredited and abandoned
Everywhere is war, me say war
That until there are no longer first class
And second class citizens of any nation
Until the colour of a man's skin
Is of no more significance than the colour of his eyes
Me say war
That until the basic human rights are equally
Guaranteed to all, without regard to race
Dis a war
That until that day
The dream of lasting peace, world citizenship
Rule of international morality
Will remain in but a fleeting illusion
To be persued, but never attained
Now everywhere is war, war
3. Lady Day
.....Pastoral scene of the gallant south,
The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth,
Scent of magnolias, sweet and fresh,
Then the sudden smell of burning flesh.

I've been living in your cassette
it's the modern equivalent
Of singing up to a capulet
On a balcony in your mind
Semisonic - Singing in my sleep
We both went back to her place
and we waded through the johnnies
she put another notch in her bedpost
while I watched the Two Ronnies
The Macc Lads - Charlotte
Well thats tarts and whores but you're much more
You're a different kind coz you want their mind
The Jam - Butterfly Collector
Does his make up in his room, dabs himself with cheap perfume
eyeholes in a paper bag, greatest lay I ever had
Placebo - Nancy Boy
During the war-time, an American pilot
made every air raid a time of excitement
She moved to his prairie
but married a Texan
She learnt from a distance how love was a lesson

So pleased that you've mentioned Marley. I've been desperately trying to find a one or two liner but have come to the conclusion that pretty much every line of his music is a classic. :p :afro:

Agreed that Marley's lyrical output was tremendous and spoke to the entire world, be you resident in the 1st, 2nd or 3rd. This particular song resonates loudly given the various conflicts that a gwoan in the world today.
For me, it wasn't until I worked in French West Africa (Cote d'Ivoire) during the early 80's that I truly understood the international dimension and popularity of Bob's music. There were young and old African folk there who spoke only a little English but who were word perfect on Bob's lyrics and would want to discuss/debate their significance with you (in French). In fact a lot of people in Abidjan thought his song Trenchtown (off The Confrontation album) was not written about the tough ghetto area in Kingston Jamaica, but about the tough ghetto area in Abidjan called Treichville... and amended the lyrics accordingly.
Bob was a musical great whose output is as relevant today as when it was first written.....and I miss him loads

I feel there's an absence of female artist acknowledgement on this thread. So, here are some faves that have sprung to mind:
"Oh Lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz? My friends all drive Porsches, I must make amends." Mercedes Benz, Janis Joplin
"I used to ride with a vending machine repair man. He said he's been done this road more than twice. He is high on intellectualism. I've never been there, but the brochure looks nice." Every Day, Sheryl Crow
"You're my favourite mistake." Sheryl Crow
"The only boy who could ever reach me, was the son of a Preacher Man."
Aretha Franklin/Dusty Springfield
"Give me one reason to stay here and I'll turn right back around. You see, I don't want to leave you lonely. You'd better make me change my mind!" Give me one reason, Tracy Chapman
"Mother of us all. Place of our birth. We all are witness, to the rape of the world." Rape of the World, Tracy Chapman

I am actually a very happy, spangly soul :D I just appreciate that the best music is often produced during darker times or deeper thought. They seem to promote more intense emotion, which for me is quite uplifting, reassuring and mysterious. :vader:

OK Miss Chief. A good point, well put.
:p
Although I agree that the "darker" moments make for more meningful or thoguh-provoking lyrics, does it make me a bad person coz I like things that come from happiness??
Hold on, I'm coming. (Wilson Pickett??)
Do it to me one more time. (Carly Simon??)
Bang Bang, the mighty fall. (That scottish Tw@t)
And he looks me in the eye when he shoots (Johnny Reggae - The Piglets)
there are many more, but you may not curtsy again if I continue
;)

It certainly doesn't make you a bad person because you like things that come from happiness. Earlier in the thread, I acknowledged 'The Doors' and 'Bob Marley' who have produced really wonderful, pretty, soulful, unforgettable lyrics. I also enjoy such beauty. In fact, I'm off on hols soon and it's such a task (a nice task, of course) for me to decide on what music to take to fulfill all my different emotions and tastes.
Here's a goodie, dedicated to the England side and all Palace supporters, with my glass half full for next season.
"We've come a long, long way together. Through the hard times and the good. I have to celebrate you baby. I have to praise you like I should." Mixed by Fat Boy Slim but no idea who did the original- any offers?
I'm all out of curtsies, but I shall salute you instead!

An old one - Julie London - Cry me a River
'Said that love was too plebian,
Told me you were through with me an'
Now you say you love me
Well just to prove you do,
Come on and cry me a river
Cry me a River
I cried a river over you'
There's not been any Billy Bragg mentioned yet, so from his old band Riff Raff's Romford Girls:
'Underneath their clothes from C&A's
Romford Girls have bodies that amaze'
Plenty of great lines from the Buzzcocks too - like
'This pathetic clown
Will keep hanging around
That's if you dont' mi-i-i-i-ind'
But I'd have to concur that Tom Waits has knocked out more great lyrics than anyone else I can think of, funnystuff to genuinely moving. My favourite is Kentucky Avenue, where one kid describes to another all the great things they can do together, jumping off the roof, following the firetruck, killing rattle snakes and then he hits you with;
'I'll take the spokes from your wheelchair,
and a magpies wings
And tie em to your shoulders and your feet
I'll steal a hacksaw from my dad
And cut the braces off your legs
And we'll bury them tonight in the cornfield'

Half Man Half Biscuit have a whole collection of classic lines including:
"99% of gargoyles look like Bob Todd"
"Do the Len Ganley Stance"
"All I want for Christmas is a Dukla Prague away kit"
"Feck me, It's Fred Titmus"
"I hate Una Stubbs"
John Cooper Clark:
"You make life like a fairy tale - Grimm"
"He makes love like a footballer, he dribbles before he shoots"
"Motor cycle Michael wants to buy a tank. He's only 29 years old and he's learning how to w@nk"

One of the greatest songs ever written.
Another goodie is Christmas Card from a Hooker in Minneapolis:
"I'd buy a used car lot, but never sell any of them. Just drive a different car every day, depending on how I feel"
