"Alan Lee Alan Lee"

The great man should be playing on Saturday. A Hillsborough hero (along with Scannell if he's fit), he deserves a warm welcome. As do Scannell and Vaughan. It would be sad if we ignored these guys, who ran their plums off for us, during that season.

(cue "I only support my team / why should I applaud the oppo etc etc).

I agree that we should give him a clap when his name is announced. The same for Scannell and Vaughan.

But never forget, the guy was/is an awful footballer at best despite the cult that developed around him.

Yes, because every player who has been slagged off on an internet message board always scores hat-tricks the following week. If that was the case Marlon King would have scored 3000 career goals!

12 goals in 71 games playing as a striker suggests he was terrible for us.

He'll always be a hero for Hillsborough, but a championship striker he is not.

Smashing character..always knew he was tecnhically lacking but wanted the best for him

remember that clip the club released of the lads on way back from Sheff Wed..he looked exhausted and proud as f*ck, just quietly coming to terms with the magnitude of his input on the day

forever a hero for his efforts

Have a lot of respect for Alan Lee, there was a video of the team coming back from Sheffield, whilst all the youngsters were buzzing, Alan was just sat there knackered, warn out but sounded so proud and was just glad he did his bit, that header and his celebration I will remember. Big clap for him, Scanz and JV - couldn't ask for more decent characters who got Palace

Scoring one in twenty Alan Lee

mcmean
18-12-2012, 10:13 AM
Old fashioned centre forward. Got a lot of respect for the effort he put in, and scored some important goals.

People tend to overlook his contribution in games that he didn't score too, he unsettled defenders and won countless headers to set up goals.

He'll be getting a decent reception from me

Pub Idol
18-12-2012, 10:32 AM
I started a thread a few months after he joined having a pop. He looked fat and disinterested. Warnock agreed it seemed and loaned him. He looked well out of favour and was nearly sold but Stern Johns injury gave him a lifeline and he looked much better after that. He lead the line well battled hard and although goals werent plenty he was making like hard for defenders. I think the one of the Villa players said he gave him his toughest game of the season. But apart from this he seemed be leading the charge when the club was in turmoil. His winding up of the players before games and his attitude on the pitch was crucial in our survival. When the offer came in in August 2010 it seemed like a decentt deal financially for all but we lost another leader and after, Hill Derry, Butterfield and Ertl we could not afford to loose another stand up guy. And it nearly cost us.

18-12-2012, 10:34 AM
The Chuck Norris jokes got tiresome very quickly, but a top bloke and part of Palace folklore for that header at Sheffield Wednesday. He wasn't a great footballer but he'll always have my best wishes.

Pub Idol
18-12-2012, 10:51 AM
He was bought (IMO) as forward who could still run. He got injured and when he returned any legs he had at Ipswich had gone. I think that disapointed everyone and he lost confidence. What made things worse was it was rushed signing. Warncok wanted Chris Ilummo and missed out on him through a phone call to SJ not being picked up. He went on scored 20 for Wolves!

PauLo
18-12-2012, 10:54 AM
I liked that he always looked so pleased when he scored. Other than that, he's just another ex player.

Do you think we would have survived 2010 without him ? I know he wasnt exactly world class.... but he played a big part IMO and without that relegation or worse was massively on the cards.

PauLo
18-12-2012, 11:25 AM
He'll get a polite round of applause from me for all he did. Same as I would do for any other ex player. He just seemed to have gained a cult status for showing a bit of bite and determination. Calvin Andrew had the same just scored 8 goals less and played a few less games.

I'm not taking anything away from the heroes of Hillsborough. I was there and it will stick in the memory and Alans contribution will always be remembered.

Just a thought though, shouldn't this be in 'Memory Lane'?

I was pretty shocked by the abuse Jobi McAnuff got at Watford away a while back and I thought he gave quite a lot to us in his time, including winning goals in the last minute at Brighton and at Leeds and theres the hero worship of a barely scoring centre forward?

He was, but wasn't ready to take it.
IMHO, Sean still has a good chance of making it - he has all the basics - but may be a late developer, a kind of superior version of Grabban.
He needs to get his head together and find a manager who believes in him.
He has another couple of years to make his breakthrough.
It's nuts to write players off at 21, (not saying that we were wrong to move him on though).

I would disagree with those saying Alan Lee is an awful footballer, a good striker doesn't have to score goals. The ones that are remembered generally are goalscorers, but recall how smaller strikers say Emile Heskey is the ideal strike partner? I really don't think he's that bad a player.

Scanz played in the middle for 3 games at the opening of last season. He played well against Peterborough and scored, and then also scored against Coventry.

Then Dougie decided he wanted to play 4-5-1 and he was put out wide again and that was largely that.

It was sad that he moved on, but I think his development was going to stall if he didn't try going somewhere else.
