I see Reading are thinking of making a bid for Southampton's Lambert. Come on Ollie, get in there before them.

Pretty sure southampton have no intention of letting him go, why would they

Jack Daniels

Taken from a Saints website:
"But the report suggests Saints will only consider selling last term’s 15-goal top scorer if they land £18m Brazilian international Leandro, the leading marksman in last year’s London Olympic tournament."

This would be the greatest signing we have ever made.

Saints will not sell though, hasn't he just signed a new deal?

Would be the perfect player to play as the central figure of a front 3.

Can't see this happening in a million years though unfortunately...

Would also be an interesting battle when FFS was back from injury!

Two possible reasons - as with many clubs that have almost gone to the wall - they are prepared to gamble their future on a quick fix or Zingaravich is a seriously well off dude prepared to pump in huge amounts of personal money. Either way we should avoid getting drawn into an over-priced signing, it's not worth the risk, certainly not now. Was a very different proposition two years ago. If they do let him go somebody will pay more than common-sense would determine for him.

Would a player like Lambert represent gambling our future though? We have received a substantial sum for getting promoted and also sold our best player for a large fee. Whilst not cheap you feel that this is the sort of player we could realisticaly sign.

The Rickie Lambert of two years ago perhaps and the Rickie Lambert of today would be a gamble worth taking for the right fee / wages, but whilst a single player might not endanger much it is the knock on effect. Overpay for one player, or pay a player too much and, as SP has already mentioned, all of a sudden clubs and players demand more and it quickly becomes a pattern. Also, if you break a wage structure it has an effect on existing players and what they expect, or simply creates bad feeling and can split a dressing room, if only ever so slightly. Now I'm not saying that Southamption or Lambert would cause these sorts of problems, but I am saying that he would go to highest bidder and I suspect that highest bidder will go beyond what is "sensble" for Palace.

In terms of tall strikers we obviously have murray, wilbriham, and chamakh, but i still think we need one more to support the smaller players such as gayle and phillips etc in case of injury to the other target men. lambert would be ideal and with a decent offer i reckon it would reasonably realistic that we could sighn him. He is improving in the prem and can see southampton playing other target men up front as they are developing into a more stable prem team and and will be spending more money on individual players. Not only will he be good at helping the smaller players in terms of the quality they have but he is also a proven scorer.

I actually think we can find a better fit for us. For our side we need someone with pace as well as aerial ability IMHO. Diabate is the one I want. Plus Bendtner, who can also play wide due to insane technical ability.

People tend to get blinded by the top salaries, whereas Lambert spent the vast majority of his career in the lower leagues. Salaries are ok, but the career is not long enough to set you up for life. He signed for Saints in League 1, probably on good championship wages but considering that was 4 years ago he is unlikely to be set for life.

Signed a new deal in the summer but a bumper £70k a year for 3 years and he is set so why shouldn't he chase that and do the best for him and his family.

Don't think anyones blaming him for that, more wondering why people would pay that for him.

A decent career in the championship ought to set you up for life though. 250k a year for ten tears is a fifty year career at 50k p.a. How many of us earn that?

You ignore tax.

250k a year for 10 years is only £1.25m after tax.

That is the same as a 40 year career earning £47k a year (figure are very rough) so yes a 10 year career in the Championship probably should set you up for life if you choose it to.

Lamberts issue is he has only had 4 years playing at that level or higher!

17-01-2014, 02:17 PM
You think players pay full tax?

I'm sure a lot is offset, plus the money comes in a short period of time, those with sense invest in all sorts of stuff.

They don't all just retire to some desert island in the Caribbean at 35.

EryrExile
17-01-2014, 02:28 PM
those with sense invest in all sorts of stuff.

...and those with slightly less sense invest in a load of pretty terrible stuff. If you invest poorly now and it all goes belly up in 10 years time, you won't have any meaningful income stream to rectify it. It's quite different from an established businessman with a few different irons in the fire, it's not difficult to see why a lot of retired footballers end up as they do, even if they didn't just spend 5 years spunking £100k/week on some playboy lifestyle.
