in his Chelsea days I would've laughed at the thought of him ever wanting to come to a 'smaller' club but it's been reported that WBA have triggered a release clause on £2.6 mil in his contract

Personally I think he is worth a lot more than that.

Does he represent much better value for money than Bent?

Good player, but his wages would be stupid.

Good player, but his wages would be stupid.

I was wondering with deals like this where good, experienced players are available for free or a low fee whether it's worth going down the route of large signing on bonuses which can be used to maintain the wage structure whilst providing the player with the incentive to sign.

For example, £500000ish of signing on bonus equates to £10000pw in wages.

So... I'd say Kalou is worth in the region of 4-5m. Triggering a release clase of £2.5m and giving a signing on fee of £1m with wages of £25k gives effective wages of £45k for the first year.

So as a club we could effectively look at this as £3.5m fee plus £25k wages. Kalou is happy as he effectively gets £45k per week. We're happy as we get a player for for below his value and don't break the wage structure. Other players are happy as one if their colleagues isn't getting paid more than them.

There could then be a loyalty bonus in the contract triggered by his second year based on us staying in the premiership.

I know it's a bit of a backhand way of paying above the wage structure, but in this instance semantics are important, I feel.

14 goals in 28 apps last season - impressive.

Never thought he was good enough for the Chelsea squad, but would be brilliant in our current team. However, reading this:

Manager Rudi Garcia was pleased to see Kalou join Lille but admits that it wasn't easy to convince him to join the French side.

Makes me think we would find it even harder to convince him to sign for a newly promoted side.

It took him a helluva long time to settle over here last season, and come Christmas it looked like he was going to be one of the biggest transfer flops in recent French football history. However, after the winter break, he came back completely transformed. 2 "Ligue" goals up to Christmas and then 12 in the second half of the season!
As you say, if he took some convincing to join a club which was in the CL, what would he think about popping down to Sarf London for a season? :D

How much did Lyon pay for Gourcuff? ;)

Maybe we should try and re-unite him with Chamakh!

You're right there! I probably meant one of the biggest flops of last season!:o
As for Gourcuff, he came off the bench last night in the CL pre-pre qualifying match against Grasshoppers. He still isn't doing anything to justify the ridiculous money Lyon paid for him and are paying him every month. He's lost his place to a young lad called Clément Grenier who is definitely one to look out for.
Chamakh and Gourcuff at Selhurst Park, and why not Platini and Raymond Kopa too?! :D

Grenier has looked good and Lyon must be glad they've extended his contract.

It does beg the question over what to do with Gourcuff though, I can see him ending up at Arsenal or PSG.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the 2 loan thing only applies if loaning from an English club? Foreign loans don't come into it.

I think with this kind of stuff I just assume bollocks until something is made of it.

If I recall Kalou did very well after his move to Lille, surprised to hear he is out of favour now.

Good player, would be an excellent addition to our squad.

2003–2006 Feyenoord 69 (35)
2004 → Excelsior (loan) 11 (4)
2006–2012 Chelsea 156 (36)
2012– Lille 67 (30)

We simply must have him in our squad if it were at al possible.

Would be a superb signing, his goal scoring record is also better than I thought.

I won't get excited about this one just yet though.
