Not the most reliable source, based on lines like this...

"His job will be to put pressure on Cardiff's current goalkeeping incumbent, Julian Speroni; the Argentine is, like Simonsen, a former Dens Park player."

HOL_Beagle

Anyone read the piece?

Alexander, meanwhile, released by Rangers at the start of the summer, has signed for Barclays Premier League side Crystal Palace, thanks to a chance phone call with the club's goalkeeping coach, George Wood, with whom he worked at Cardiff City. One thing led to another, reacquaintances were made, and he signed a one-year deal. His job will be to put pressure on Cardiff's current goalkeeping incumbent, Julian Speroni; the Argentine is, like Simonsen, a former Dens Park player.

Why would we be signing a goalkeeper from the Scottish lower divisions who is not even first choice at his club? Because he knows George Wood, I am guessing it ends the debate on Jules he is obviously the Number 1 despite rumours that we were after the Portugal keeper. We do need back-up I think that Price will stay and we will have a third in this guy. Any injury to a keeper and will be in trouble otherwise.

I am not sure he is its about the 25 man squad rule I guess, we need to name them at the end of August. Though this now limits the signings a little on that , I think we might see a couple more transfer out soon.

My only concern is around the 25 man squad rule, we need 7 or 8 home grown players this does not help. Looking at the squad and adding a couple more non England or Wales players we are going to have to be very careful.

That's put a dampener on today then. Never mind. We seem to have been linked with a lot of very exciting players, but I guess SP's tough negotiations mean we won't pay enough to get a lot of them. I'm sure we'll pick up a few gems before the end of August, but I do think we're in for a rude awakening on Sunday!

Watching Kevin Phillips recent interview on Sky Sports 1 made me think that perhaps SP is being too tough. KP said that after assurances from Holloway he went into negotiations thinking a 1 year deal would take 5 minutes. Instead it took over 5 weeks. And that is for a very grounded player with a real desire to end his career in the Premiership, and who has just played a pivotal role in securing our promotion.

Yes - it's not that hard to lose two keepers. Because it is so specialist you can't "muddle through" even for a game or two. Probably go years and never really need the third keeper, but when he is needed he could be vital.

I assume Price is staying.
3 keepers seems to be the norm these days, and the only sort of players happy to be 3rd choice are the semi-retired Carlo Nashs, Stuart Taylors & Mike Pollitts of this world (as opposed to someone young and ambitious like Foderingham was).

If Alexander came here thinking it was to be anything other than 3rd choice he's crazy.

Still a little surprised more faith wasn't put in Fitzsimons or one of the even younger keepers (King, Gregory).
Perhaps I'm overestimating their ages though?

Some people need to lower their expectations. All the talk of Darren Bent has gone to some peoples heads and a signing like this are seen as 'disappointments'.

3rd choice keeper, but needed. If, and I know this is unlikely, Speroni AND Price (if he's resigned) get injured, do you want a kid with NO LEAGUE EXPERIENCE WHATSOEVER in goal against Man City?

In terms of numbers, a goal keeper was much more important.

Signing a second/third choice GK is not more important than securing some defenders - that's if Price is still here, which I thought was the case.

I'm not disputing the validity of signing another keeper; I was just hoping a defender and Bent would be the two Browett mentioned yesterday.

As someone else said, if Bent is the other one then it's been a great day.

Ollie has obviously decided to take a gamble on the defence so we'll keep our fingers crossed that they can hold their own.

Look at what happened to Watford in the final league game of last season. They lost their first two keepers to injury and had to put an inexperienced kid in goal. Then lost to Leeds and missed out on automatic promotion due to errors by the youth keeper. The rest is history...:lux::lux:

An experienced 3rd choice keeper is a must at this level. It's no time to use kids.

you've never heard of him? He played for Cardiff for a few years - over 200 games. And Ipswich.

Price is in his 30th year and has played a grand total of 102 games.

Why are people getting so bothered about this?. It's not as if he is going to be first choice.

As CPFC2010 explained earlier on this forum, we need three senior keepers, Lewis Price is currently out injured; so we needed to recruit this experienced keeper on a 1 year deal ahead of the new season.

"He was with us at Rangers for 5 years and was number 2 to Allan McGregor. Alexander often got Scottish Cups games whilst McGregor got league games. Alexander always done really well when he got his chance. When Rangers went bust last year, and McGregor left, I was happy that Alexander stayed. He did well last year but seemed to switch off at times. He had long running contract wrangles that may have messed with his focus.*In short he's a good shot stopper and brave. He doesn't always command his box with great authority but is reliable and a total pro."

Alexander always done really well when he got his chance. When Rangers went bust last year, and McGregor left, I was happy that Alexander stayed. He did well last year but seemed to switch off at times. He had long running contract wrangles that may have messed with his focus.*In short he's a good shot stopper and brave. He doesn't always command his box with great authority but is reliable and a total pro."

says it all really

mcgregor is shockingly bad

At first I just assumed this was a youngster who would be back up keeper and not count towards the 25. Now realising who he is, doesn't it seem odd to have 3 keepers in the 25.

When was the last time we had to use our third choice keeper?!

Yeah but what happens in the past has no effect on what could happen.

Obviously IH doesn't think Fitzsimons is ready to be the third choice, at least not in hre Premier League.

I wonder if we should have tried to tempt Foderingham back as number2.

He'd rather be at Rangers apparently! And thinks our first game is at WHL :D

He also thinks our first game is away from home.

That edit came in as I was typing!

You're always going to have at least 2 keepers in a 25 man squad. Unless you're Neil Warnock! ;) .... but I think SB said that you MUST have 3 senior goalkeepers in the listed squad.

Let's just hope he's not there, if Speroni gets injured in the first game!

was the Rangers hero in their UEFA Cup semi-final penalty shoot-out a few years ago.

Based on YouTube comments of that, and the fact he stayed on when they were demoted last year, I guess he's somewhat of a favourite up there.

Can't believe people everyone is so sure Price is better than him.

Our fans put our players on such a blinkered pedestal sometimes

Glad we're signing back-up instead of challenging Jules' starting position. Sounds like the perfect chap.

Yes because he supports them. Zaha would rather be at Man. U than here - so what?

I just replied to CPFC2010's post saying that his injury was slight and that we need 3 keepers in the Prem, which suggests to me that Price is staying:p

Cos it's sad how everyone wanted Bent so bad and then as soon as he goes to a better club its suddenly oh didn't want him anyway. Who would want Bent on there shirt etc etc. Yet we've just signed more quantity
