Due today. David Bowie, Gemma Hayes, and The Coral have already been announced.

What do you lot reckon have been the albums of the year?

Id be inclined to say Doves or Idlewild

Never been a big fan of the Doves and the Idlewild album is nowhere near as good as the first one.

But the Streets would definitely be up there for me.

Who cares and why. All these awards are just a back slapping thing.
Free lunch for them why we get stitched up paying tooooo much
for CD's etc. :grrr:

for CD's etc. :grrr: How can you say that? There's no excuse for paying more than £13 for most albums when they are released (some can be got for around a tenner if you look hard enough) and you'll often find them coming down a month or two after release.

Agree that awards ceremonies are generally a waste of time, although the Mercury prize has slightly more justification in that it is for albums which are supposed to be non-mainstream, and probably wouldn't get much exposure otherwise.

I generally find these awards a good guide of which albums NOT to buy. :)

I have actually got the Pulp, Gomez and Badly Drawn Boy albums, not because of the prize, but due to general singles airplay, heard in a record shop and M.T.V. exposure ( ) respectively.

Past Mercury winners
1992 Primal Scream
1993 Suede
1994 M People
1995 Portishead
1996 Pulp
1997 Roni Size and Reprazent
1998 Gomez
1999 Talvin Singh
2000 Badly Drawn Boy
2001 PJ Harvey

I didn't realise that the Roots Manuva album counts for this year's awards.

Definitely one of the bests. And the Streets as well. Don't really like Bowie's Heathen to be honest.

ESP are good as well. Wouldn't mind them or the Coral winning (who are brilliant live).

The Streets - think Ive heard some of that claptrap - if the name of the album is anything to go by, Im sure Ive heard a song with that line in.

Doves must win!

I think these albums are pretty much away from the mainstream apart from M People and Pulp, who I think won with Different Class.

This years crop seems a little slack thought. No Michael Grech? No Boards of Canada? No Nora whatsername, didn't Black Twang release an album last year as well?

I've only heard Run Come Save Me from that lot but find it hard to imagine anything could better it.

Yes. The Blak Twang album is very very good.

Ah I see they've got Roots Manuva and Beverley Knight - their quota for black artists is not just filled, its overflowing.

I got The Coral's album yesterday, and it is pretty darn good. It's the sort of thing that might win the Mercury Music Prize as well, because it's quite a unique style, in much the same way that Gomez, Roni Size and Talvin Singh were a bit different.

Verily, their condescension cup runneth over.

its a pretty poor selection this year, but that just reflects british music at the moment. My fave albums of the last year are by, the strokes, the von bondies, the hives, the vines, the white stripes and soundtrack to our lives none of whom are british.
