Not sure if there is a need for two separate threads on these final group games in Group C.

As a rule Greeks are partial to anything at the back.

Puts me in mind of a young female work colleague many years back who used to go to a particular Greek restaurant with her boyfriend and would tell us they were going out for a "bit of Greek tonight". She'd get very flustered at our sniggering. Wonder if anyone told her?

Jesus do Ivory Coast not want this?

They're through with a draw?

Risky, but maybe they think playing Costa Rica is more up their street than playing Uruguay.

Plus they're really lazy and always like to do the bare minimum

Now watching this game....I presume it's as bad as it sounds?

I'm switching to watch this one in the second half - because both teams have something to fight for. Greece will probably qualify if they win (unless Japan win big against Colombia). Ivory Coast only need a draw (unless Japan beat Col by 2 goals). Good chance of more goals I think.

I want the african countries to do well in this competition, even though Im a bit sad about Ivory Coast not making it to the last 16 Im still happy as Greece did it and proved that good work rate, dicipline and defensive football is successful compared to Ivory Coast and their players why barely ran and didnt seem to care.

Ivory Coast will probably be a better team when the so called golden generation quits.

His swinging leg got caught against the defenders leg and thus Samaras kicked against his own leg, like golf club catching a thick bit of rough.

I can't believe how many people think that was a dive on twitter (maybe I shouldn't be surprised knowing how many morons live on there). It was a stonewall penalty. Samaras goes to strike the ball, the defender sticks his leg in (absolutely nowhere near the ball) and catches Samaras- who ends up volleying the ground because of the defenders contact. Pen. https://vine.co/v/MtnO7MAx0OQ - whoever thinks that is a dive needs to stop watching football.

Is there a better clip to justify your case? Because that one makes it look as though Samaras kicked the other guy deliberately, and dived.

The defender came the wrong side of their attacker and clips his leg. I doubt there is a striker in any team that wouldnt have made the pmost of it. IC barely complained.

Don't let that deflect from an awful performance from the Ivory Coast or brainless end to the match by the likes of Toure. Could easily have seen the game out.

What's the wrong side? The defender in that clip has not initiated any contact. Samaras appears to have deliberately kicked him behind the knee, then kicked the ground, and then perpetrated one of the worst dives I've seen in a while that would never have been triggered by that sort of contact anyway - what's with the legs flicking up backwards?

Never a penalty in a million years.

Billyd
25-06-2014, 08:36 AM
It was accidental no question but it was still a foul. Very unlucky from Ivory Coasts point of view. But not a dive and certainly a penalty.

From Greeces perspective it really proves if you can defend well your always in a game, as we all know!

I had to look back to make sure you were talking about the same incident!

100% a penalty, as certain as you'll ever see. Samaras doesn't even know Sio is there, he's totally focussed on striking the ball and has his leg clipped as he goes to shoot. Same as any other incident where a defender is behind an attacker and catches his trailing leg - it's not intentional, but it's clearly a foul.

Regardless, it was a fantastic game to watch (compared to the dross in the earlier games). The competition is poorer for not having the Ivory Coast still in it. Poor substitutions cost them big.

...are you drunk sir? Samaras deliberately kicked him behind the knee?? Samaras doesn't even know the defender is there - Samaras is clearly focused on the ball. The defender isn't going for the ball, he's reaching in trying to block off Samaras as he goes to finish. He clearly didn't win the ball and it was the contact which caused Samaras to kick the ground hard - he impeded the player - It's a foul. Penalty.
