View Full Version : How many grounds have you done?

Also is there a ground that is your holy grail, somewhere that your team hasnt played at for years & years & you've never had the chance to do yet?

I've done 74, i count grounds that are now gone that i've done, ie old Hull, still to do but done the old only three to go, new Colchester/Rotherham/Shrewsbury.

Most of those were obviously following Chelsea but i've also done the odd ground when i've been away for weekends ect
main reason is i'd never get a ticket if Chelsea ever played there, like Hartlepool for example, went there a few years back when they played QPRhahaha, the away end only holds about 6/700 so i'd have no chance if we ever played there.

I'm desperate to see us at Port Vale/Bury/Rochdale places apart from youth games we havent played at for years, the furthest i've still to do are Carlise & Torquay.

Grounds to do

Cardiff(missed Ninian Park)
Doncaster
Huddersfield
MK Dons
Carlise
Bury
Colchester(new, done old)
Sc**thorpe
Yeovil
Rochdale
Chesterfield
Crawley
Shrewsbury(new,done old)
Torquay
Burton Albion
Accrington
Port Vale
Rotherham(new done old)
Morecambe
Hereford
Dag & Red

Ive also got 7 x league clubs now in the conference that ive lost, Barnet, Wrexham, Halifax, Bristol Rovers, Kidderminster, Macclesfield, Aldershot, Lincoln,

Somewhere in the late 70's at last count. Most with Palace but a few random.
e.g. Crawley v Barrow.:p

Close to 80. Some have now gone out the league (Grimsby, Stockport etc). I also include former grounds. Only Barnet and Crawley are non-Palace matches of all these clubs.
Fairly sure they are all lower half of the league clubs where I haven't been, but then Palace haven't been down there since 1976.

Been to around 70 grounds, some no longer being used, somewhere on the BBS theres a thread covering the subject....furthest in the league was a 1-0 away win at Carlisle in the 80's..iv'e always fancied an FA Cup game away at Weymouth funnily enough...i suppose that stems from 3 beaut holidays there back in my teens, the FA Cup and League cup are a great way to increase the away ground tallys..........places like Maidstone and Torquay,:p

High 80's now but about a dozen of those have been whilst watching Accrington rather than Palace (mainly north west stadiums such as Bury, Carlisle & Rochdale along with other grounds like Hereford and Chester /Chesterfield). Ive also done most of the Conference and Conference North grounds.

Seen Palace at 110 different League grounds, although that includes Wembley (which I count as one ground despite having done both 'old' and 'new') and the Millennium Stadium, both for football league play offs (amongst other games)

I only count the ground itself, so Priestfield (for example) I count once despite having seen both Gillingham and Br*ghton home games there.

I do count friendlies, testimonials and even reserves games though, which I suspect don't 'count' if you are a 'strict' 92 Club member.

I guess the most obscure I've got in my total is seeing Palace play a friendly at Dorchester, which I count as a football league ground as Bournemouth have played league games there. All the grounds I count are featured in the "Ultimate Directory of Football League grounds" by Paul and Shirley Smith.

No doubt some Palace fans can claim Merthyr, scene of our first ever league game, as we played a friendly there about a decade ago.

New league ground ticks are few and far between now although in recent seasons there has been a reserves game at Colchester's new ground and of course last season the Emirates.

Holy Grail for me is Northampton's Sixfields Stadium - Palace Reserves played there 2 or 3 years running, including one game in the afternoon, prior to a 1st team evening cup match at Sheffield Wednesday, but I managed to miss them all.

MK Dons is the one I most look forward to - when Palace eventually get a game there, we should take several thousand and it'll be a top day out.

My 5 year old son is on 63 League grounds (not including Palace abroad in Ireland and Germany)

I've done quite a few non league grounds, for friendlies of course, but have never seen Palace play a competitive match at a non league ground (I'm not counting the Withdean!). Last time Palace played such a game would have been the FA Cup at Enfield(?) circa 1982(?)

Over 70 but all watching Palace just visiting a ground does not count IMO, done quite a few as doubles (that I count as 1, Baseball ground/pride park, Highfield Road/ Rioch Highbury/library etc etc) The Etihad (man city will be a double that wont count as one for me) I will never make the 92, but not that bothered tbh

86 grounds, some two different grounds, or 3 times in case of Brighton, from those currently in the league, all competitive 1st team games.
A further 8 in Conference, Conference North and Conference South, although i think only Stockport was a competitive game of those.

As well as 60 odd English grounds with Leicester....iv'e been to away games at Atletico Madrid in Europe and Vienna for us v Red Star Belgrade....also Old Wembley World cup qualifyer in 1989 and Rotterdam for the 1993 World Cup qualifyer...
OG....is that the game you mentioned?....the reason i ask,all ferries to Holland by rail the night before the game were suspended and we were helped out by Tottenham and travelled via Oostende where we spent the night with Chelsea in a bar, well half of them, the other half were behind bars of a different sort....early morning train to pick up the Rotterdam link but as we arrived at the station a riot was underway on the next platform and we were approached by a slightly younger Palace/England fan......

Trouble was we were on the Dutch side of the station and this Palace fan and a young Arsenal lad joined us for safety in numbers ......now i don't know if either of these 2 had previously upset anyone but us now 4 were soon under a bit of pressure by a load of Dutch and it took an arm full of cutlery and plates to get rid of these Dutch......i can't claim to have been to Rotterdams ground as i was lifted outside the turnstiles for not having a match ticket and put in a fenced off area nearby......for some reason the heavyly guarded 3 coach convoy we were in were then taken to a train station and escorted to Amsterdam by riot police then allowed our freedom...very strange.

What a great few days that was. I still have the Sunday French paper - headline (translated) "a friendly game for the players but not for the fans".

I think you had to be in Calais to understand what happened - most were early 20's and having fun. It is hard to explain the atmosphere after the game - you were there and know.

After the fun of the game, a good friend and regular poster on here hit a French fairground worker that night and we got chased back to our hotel. I remember his slip-on shoe came off as we ran into the hotel - the mob were about 20 metres away and his shoe was half way. He ran back to pick it up and survived. Our room overlooked the front of the hotel so (without turning on any lights) looked out at the baying crowd.

What a weekend.

what the "away day vibe" in Germany. Its widely recognised that German grounds have pretty good home atmosphere, where in England Away ends is generally where the atmos is.

Well, it Really depends on the team.
For the first and most of the second bundesliga I would say the home atmosphere is really good.
But there are teams like vfr aalen, SSV Sandhausen or 1. FC Heidenheim for example. These Are Teams That have a Really small Stadium, with a Bad Fan reputation. Home and away.
But there are teams like 1. FC Kaiserslautern, Karlsruher FC or union Berlin for example which get supported well home AND away from their supporters.

Heidenheim, aalen and all these rubbish teams are all teams with nearly no history in professional football. Mostly there is a locus sponsor that tries to promote the club as much over the years. But these clubs have almost no active fan base.

I can also give you a short insight in the third bundesliga, in that my team, MSV Duisburg, is located.
MSV Duisburg is a team with a long tradition in the first two leagues. But they were relegated two seasons ago due to financial problems.
We have to face in this league on the one side teams like Sonnenhof Grossaspach or some u21/u23, amateur teams of first league teams that bring just 10-20 supporters with them.
But we also face teams like dynamo Dresden or hansa Rostock that bring much much more fans with them.
So it's really depends on the team.

One first league example is TSG Hoffenheim, rubbish supporters, small fan base, just 100-300 away supporters in general.

Sorry for writing so much, hope this answer your question. Otherwise pm

I have been following Eintracht Frankfurt for about ten years mainly away and I would say some of the away support is amazing. About 5 years ago I went to Dortmund v Eintracht crowd of 80,000 with about 9000 away fans and we had to get tickets in the home end no trouble but amazing support and atmosphere. Last season Eintracht took over 12,000 midweek to Bordeaux in the Europa league and outnumbered home fans. I don't think I have been at an Eintracht away game where they took less than 3000 fans and that would be at a lesser club or smaller stadium where they only get limited allocation.

Think in Germany the away support is allowed up to 25% of tickets rather than the 10% or 3000 allocation in this country.
If this was the case we would take 15k to the Emirates. I might even manage to get hold of a ticket if this was the scenario.

i reckon its high 40's league grounds for me but some that are no more and some that have dropped out the league, probably another 10 or so non league for pre season games.walsall was a new one to me this year but most were clocked up 15 or more years ago and then have a massive gap with none being added till last few years adding on average 1 a year.will try and count up later properly.

ok counted up now by using league tables and have watched palace away at 48 current league teams on 50 grounds(southampton and derby the only ones ive done old and new)not counting away games for dons and charlton at selhurst) crawley were non league at the time and stockport have dropped out league +wembley new and old if that counts twice being on same site? and the millenium making 54,not sure how many non league but basingstoke, poole town and dorchester definately pretty sure bognor? so 57 in total that i am sure of and a few more i cant remember following palace and a tiny amount of non league for non palace games

Thanks! interesting stuff. Interesting that even in Germany, go below the 2nd tier, and some of the clubs are tiny. I guess England still has the strongest pyramid in world football (but of course the PL want to ruin that by introducing B sides)

I done nowhere near as most on here - I think about 33 including Wembley (both old and new) and the Millinneum Stadium.

I did used to go to watch Whyteleafe a lot when I was younger (as I lived near Church Rd) and have done Sutton Utd and Carshalton as well.

Don't do away games now (apart from Wembley 2013:love:). My last trip was Layer Rd, Colchester in 2007. Now that was primitive !!

49 pro league grounds for me (I'm sure I've forgotten a few) plus Celtic Park, Cappielow (Morton) and Hampden. It seems more, but just because you've been to them so many times!

I forgot about Dumbarton - one stand, three open sides and a big rock!

It's just about possible to tolerate your Chelsea leanings, but please stop there.

Only tend to do one or two away games a season so am at a horrendous 17 of current league clubs and 2 of them were watching Bromley. Will hopefully manage to do a couple more this season. Also have a few more non league clubs whilst following Bromley.

54 of the current league clubs current grounds. Tricky to get too many when we've only been outside the 2nd tier for 2 (and a bit) seasons since I started going to games.

Around the 80 mark, mainly accumulated from the mid 80's to mid 90's
