History seems to have been re-written over the years regarding this.

In my mind Steve was manager 3 times.

Once between 84-92

Then from 97 to 98

and finally from 98 - 2000

He was Director of football in 95/96 but that's like saying he Iain Moody was manager last season.... Ray Lewington. was head coach and picked the team.

Am I wrong on this ? Ray was eventually moved over and Bassett came in but Steve stayed as DOF.

:(

I don't really know the arrangement in early 1995/96 but certainly Ray Lewington and Peter Nicholas were Head coaches with Steve Coppell as DoF. Bassett came in around February time was it? He left around Novemberish of the 1996/97 season?

Coppell was indeed DOF in 1995', before leaving for the ill fated City job in late 96'
Bassett departed for Forest in February 97' and I'm sure Coppell's first game back at the helm was at Oxford United away in a comphrenive 4-1 win (great scenes on the terrace)

Blimey, I thought the whole City thing was before 96.

He also worked as an agent for Palace in the 2002-03 season.

Steve was DOF in 95/96 and although he played a key part in recruiting players - Loads of players in fact but Ray Lewington was picking the team. I think had Steve been picking the team and managing then we probably would not have needed Bassett to come in.

If we don't have a life president, then that's a job Steve could have with a start date of today.

Met Coppell at the golf day last week. What a total gent...still giving up his time to help Palace (he obviously attended and then auctioned a days golfing with him, proceeds to the academy which went for well over 1000)

Honestly never met a nicer football man.

And as a bonus he told me he'd been helping out Harris at Millwall recently so effectively aided their relegation

None since Peter Morley passed away

They have some really weird rumours / urban myths about Coppell's time at City in Manchester. Not at all credible.

That's what I thought DE. On Tuesday, it's the 25th anniversary of the great man leading out Palace at Wembley. A fitting time to make him Life President, we'll never see his like again.

Indeed, and he's probably at Selhurst for Geoff's dinner.

I'd like to eventually see the new Main Stand named after him, but I doubt that will happen in his lifetime

It's all correct what you say but I find myself falling into the '4 trap' talking Palace to people because it makes for a better story! :p

Bassett came in early Feb 96 and left late Feb '97 so a fraction over a year with him in charge and let's face it, that was a hell of a 55-week run in terms of goals and action! :p
