Can't do much as I'm away (at the foot of the Mont St Clair in Sète, but without my bike unfortunately) until next Tuesday and have only got a poxy phone.
I'll let Forza or Palestinian put any team news or other info up on here.
I'll try and get a Velogames league going.

Velogames league:
CPFC BBS
18152449

I don't seem to be able to pick the team I wanted as only few riders' names appear on my screen and I cant seem to be able to scroll down! I'll have to find a solution to this before the weekend!

Change of tactics, but what will be, will be.

Strong field.

Very strong field but a complete lottery as to who will be on what kind of form.

Provisional team picked. Must remember to go back and make changes once the rider list is finished (unlike the Tour De France when I forgot and ended up with only 8 starters)

The rider classifications on velo are strange. Sky have 4 all rounders... more than a third. lol

It does seem strange and is very limiting on who you can pick. Can't see G repeating his Tour form.

Checked my team and all nine are starting which puts me in a better position that for with Tour de France.

Current odds for overall:

Nairo Quintana 2/1
Chris Froome 11/4
Alejandro Valverde 6/1
Fabio Aru 7/1
Vincenzo Nibali 8/1
Joaquim Rodriguez 16/1
Mikel Landa 16/1
Domenico Pozzovivo 25/1

Also on a boardwalk for some of it too. Having walked along the sand paths and boardwalks in that area of Spain I can see why. Think we will see a few riders dropping off with punctures and possibly some teams losing time as they protect their leaders.

Here's the first stage. As per BBK's link, the stage has been neutralised, so teams can battle for the stage win if they wish but there will be no time gaps.

It utterly beggars belief doesn't it? It is as though it is a stage that has been designed by someone from the local tourist board who have never riden a bike or watched any cycling, alternatively, perhaps they thought it was a cyclocross race.

I was impressed by Aru in the Poland time trial, there was some power there especially when you correlate it to previous performances. His climbing there wasn't that great but that was enough for me to plump for him.

Pleased with joint 2nd, especially as I have 9 different teams represented.

I have Aru in my team too as I think he might do something at this Vuelta.

Interesting just how far back SKY have left themselves, especially in relation to Quintana. How much is Froome likely to beat Quintana by in the ITT? A minute? More?

How come you've not selected JVB this time Gonz?

No value in him @ 10 credits is there when he has very little of note on his Palmares for the past few years. He will probably win the Vuelta by half an hour now but just could not bring myself to do it when it was actually pretty hard to put a team I was happy with together.

Interesting to see how Niemiec and Navarro get on.

Hadn't seen the neutralised the stage which explains SKY not taking it too seriously.

Yes, he was announced as out during the first stage but after the finish they said he'd got back up on his bike and finished the stage. Don't know if he's still in it though. Not bothered really!

What does bother me however is Van den Broke! :(
Can anybody tell me why I picked him?:D

And is he actually in the race still or will he ever be mentioned?

Where is Niemiec?

Cannot see him in the list of finishers (191 like there was yesterday), or in any list of retirements)

He crashed on the first day with Nibali and Ewan.

Not the TTT, the first race stage.

Can't but think Chaves was a little naive with that attack today, he could've gone later and still taken the seconds off Dumoulin for the jersey. Just feel he'll pay for it tomorrow while he still has GC ambitions while Dumoulin knows stage 11's 'Andorra's Box' will see him out of it.

Got to love cycling.

A race vehicle too out the man who was going to win the race, and then fine him 300 swis francs because he was upset by it.

Not likely to reduce the chances that their employee will now face legal action.

Can Dumoulin really take this?? Commentators are saying he is too big to be hanging in there with the climbers. But he is ....

Would be good for me if he can keep it up, you can buy a bike built on the same frame as what TD is riding for just £3k, stonking bargain!

We'll see tomorrow methinks - I think he will struggle big time with all those Cat 1 climbs. I have been catching up for the last day and a bit after being away, just missing watching the passing of Stage 9 by a few hours. I cannot remember a more entertaining first week to a Grand Tour for ages but suspect the real battles will take over from what amounts to a phoney war in Andorra.

Landa after the stage:

Did you take off your earpiece?
No, but I was about to because Martinelli wanted me to stop and I didn't want to stop.

He asked you to stop?
Yes.

When?
When Fabio was already alone. I thought it was stupid. There was a 1.30 minute gap, I could win the stage and I did not think it was fair to me.

So what was your answer?
That I wasn't going to stop. He promised me that Fabio would let me win the stage... but I just didn't stop.

So Froome crashed on his own right at the start of the stage and could barely walk after being helped off his bike. Quintana was sick yesterday and considered calling it a day a couple of times during the stage. Valverde can't do those steep slopes. As for Dumoulin? I don't know what to think. I picked him in my TDF team 'cos I was sure he'd do well there. For the Vuelta he was my first name in my team but I changed to fit in both Froome and Quintana! :D

I suspect a break will make it as there are so few teams left with their main sprinters that don't have GC interest that I doubt that they will be bothered to chase down breaks.

I foolishly did the same with Ventoso, at least he is still there but I doubt he'll make much impact.

Well done Froome, 5k metres of climbing on a fractured ankle, ouch. Says he was knocked sideways. Also another Tinkov rider Sergio Paulinho knocked off by a motorbike and withdrawn. Brutal stage yesterday don't think it adds anything to racing pretty much as David Millar said all the changes were from being blown off the back rather than through exciting attacks. I think the new TdF commentators should be Bed and Millar quite enjoy their commentary.

I was impressed with Froome, that was a decent effort. And Boswell, didn't expect that.

I am a little confused by DUMOULIN. By rights he shouldn't be able to climb like that, and the fact that he's young and Dutch, does make me nervous, but I think I will try to suspend my doubts because I quite like him. Seems genuine enough.

Aru will see this through now although the way it's going his biggest challenge will be avoiding motorbikes.... although they only seem to go for Saxo Tinkoff.

And Ned and Millar, very good. Ned can talk for England though and maybe shouldn't attempt to fill in all the silences. Millar's insight is excellent, you can see why he was road captain so often. Makes Paul "Amgen Tour of California" Sherwen look daft (which he is).

I foolishly did the same with Ventoso, at least he is still there but I doubt he'll make much impact.

I almost did the same but remembered that he often seems to play that 'road captain' role these days plus you have to consider that Rojas could be favoured on the sorts of finishes he likes.

Instead I went for Matteo Pelucchi as a sprinter (in form) hiding in the unclassified section who of course crashed out at the earliest opportunity on the first competetive stage. I also had the foresight to select Nibali, Bouhanni & Henao (who crashed badly the other day but is struggling on).

Perhaps I'm being quixotic but I think he may have a tilt at the podium. I thought he might pop on the Andorra stage but fair play he managed to wiggo his way through it. It's the sharper 'puncheur' type stages that I'd worry about for him and he also lacks Sancho Panzas if isolated.

A big ask but I think he's a good lad and whilst famed for TTing his climbing ability isn't exactly an unknown. It's also a team that seems to have a good ethos about it.

I'd say good luck to him but then again perhaps I'm being quixotic and there'll be trouble at mill.

Tomorrow will be the big one. I'm looking at the gaps now, Dumoulin can probably take back what he's down at the moment in the time trial but I think he's going to lose big time tomorrow. How good is Majka's TT?

I think tomorrow is perhaps more important than the TT in terms of Dumoulin and probably Majka too - with both Aru and Purito being terrible at TT I can see real efforts being made to distance both Dumoulin and Majka by Astana and Katusha.

piaktow
06-09-2015, 04:01 PM
They will definitely distance Dumoulin, the question is whether he will lost 1-2 minutes or anything over 5. Majka will be harder, but that's why I asked about the TT, how much do Aru and Purito need to put in to him in order to feel safe against the clock?

Palestinian
06-09-2015, 04:08 PM
Majka is a much better TT than Purito and Aru, with respectable placings on those he has done in 2014 and 2015

Ah right that's what I thought. I think it's possible.
Tomorrow should be good, Astana will have their train on full force, Katusha will do what they can and hopefully Movistar will try something as well.

Very exciting race and I've just realised I'm top of velogames!

Fantastic finish again and tomorrow promises to be even better. TBF all the riders looked pretty cooked, and for the moment Dumoulin is just hanging in there. Tomorrow Katusha, Movistar will have to attack from further out though that will be risky 'cos the final few kms tomorrow are frightening IIRC!

It was an incredibly tough stage, brutal - the main contenders just hung in there with Purito attacking well inside the final km and only then did Dumoulin start to lose touch. Aru did well to limit his losses on Rodriguez - it is very evenly balanced going into the TT on Wednesday. Dumoulin will need to both recover the deficit and give himself a cushion because there is another tough stage on Friday (?), it will be interesting to see whether his efforts in the mountains have blunted his pace in the race of truth.

It's perfectly set up for the TT.The top 4 are pretty much in reverse order of time trialling ability.TTs at this stage can be unpredictable but I expect them to all put time into each other and the gaps will close. If I had to guess now I would say Aru will be just in red at the end of the stage.

ITV highlights shows I think it was average output and TD was flat throughout while the other GC riders failed off. Aru tailed off least in the final section on the and lost only a handful of seconds in that 3rd part of the course.

I am really enjoying this years Vuelta felt a bit sorry for Purito looked to me like the bike was too big for him or saddle too high just looked so awkward on the bike. David Millar really has come in to his own in the studio and commentating on the highlights. Much better than when he was standing at the TdF outside broadcast.

It was actually time loss over each part of the course.Obviously Dumoulin can't lose time to himself which is why he had a flat line all the way through.Aru didn't lose much at the end, possibly helped by the climb.

David Millar really has come in to his own in the studio and commentating on the highlights. Much better than when he was standing at the TdF outside broadcast.

He identifies most of the riders very quickly, probably because he knows most of them.ITV should consider him and Ned Boulting for commentating on the Tour because they are much slicker and informative than Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwen who chat about nothing for most of the stage.

Nothing worse than when they both have the same facts and notes and talk about the same thing within minutes of each other, and it happens far too often.

Right on both points - I gave up with ITVs TdF coverage about an hour into the prologue, they are terrible on rider ID and add little or no value. For the Vuelta I've done a mixture depending on what is most convenient but really like Millar's input and Boulting has the enthusiasm that Phil and Paul used to have but have lost along the way, both add to the viewing and are honest about riders doping past.

Purito always looks awkward on a TT bike, compare his position with the likes of Wiggins, Froome and Dumoulin. I do wonder whether he spends enough time on trying to improve his TT - Aru and Quintana have obviously been working on it , maybe it is too late for him now.

Surely there'll be fireworks tomorrow. It could be a very special day. Anyway fair play to Dumoulin. I had him in my TDF team 'cos I thought the climbs would suit him more than the very steep ones in Spain.

Here's tomorrow's parcours again with 4 Cat. 1s, a descent and a false flat run-in to the finish:

Since he won me the Tour de Suisse he's a must.I'm not keeping the same faith in Trofimov and Kruijswijk from the Giro though.:D I think Movistar will really push early in the stage because Valverde and Quintana will both still want to win.The others will need to follow them and then it becomes a race.

9th for me...

Nibali, Froome, Sagan, Degand all abandoning, an injured Howes and an average Hayman left me relying on Majka, Rodriguez and Dumoulin.

At least I chose somewhat wisely, though taking Chaves out to find a way to fit Nibali in instead of Aru was not highly intelligent.
