View Full Version : Who have we played most?

On MOTD at the weekend they said it was our 111th match with Watford.

Given the relative size and histories of the clubs I should imagine there aren't many teams we've played more than them. Who are our most played against opponents?

Is this info even accessible?

I would hazard guess at Nottingham Forest being quite high?

We have played Millwall 132 times in all competitions, including the Anglo Italian Cup according to Wikipedia. I would be surprised if they are not our most played against opponents.

I thought it was Norwich but having looked into it we've played them 111 matches which is the same as against Watford and 3 behind Coventry.

We've only 20 draws against Norwich though so I'd imagine we have the most wins (47) and defeats (44) against them.

Yeah - with a large proportion of the games coming in 1991.

Just found this. Pretty cool:

According to this we've played Millwall 97 times. Perhaps it just feels like more.

Only 61 times.

Coventry 114 - we went 24 years and 16 matches between 1967 and 1990 before we beat them. A real bogey side back then.

:)

And we probably haven't played them for 10 years. Watford may well overtake them over the next season or two.

In fact we've played them 13 times over the past 10 years!

Going through it trying to find a club we haven't played.

God we have lost to some real minnows in the FA Cup over the years !!!

Unless I skipped any - we have played every team in that list.

EDIT: Doh - its not listing every team - just the ones we have played.

Yep and that was just the third round replays in 1990/91

Won't be an overall high number, but it felt like we played Preston every bloody week for a few seasons a while back.

You can count on one hand the number of times we've played Wigan.

I'd imagine someone like Morcambe or Fleetwood have yet to play us

I think I'm right in saying Wigan is the only team from top two divisions (ish)where we've not won at least once. Now they are sinking back into obscurity so we've possibly missed our chance!

Then there's Bournemouth - I think we've never played them! Bizarre that first two games will be in Prem.

Until recently this also applied to Bolton Wanderers until we got a win a few weeks before Dougie jumped ship to there. But we never managed to win at their old ground.

We beat Wigan at Selhurst in the League Cup run where we got to the Cardiff semi finals

Bournemouth - played them for 2 or 3 seasons in the late 80's. Awful policing.

Interesting! I've been watching Palace since early 1990s so have no memory of us playing Bournemouth. I was relying on CPFC 'The Complete Record' Obviously this has some gaps!

:)

Still think we've not won away at Wigan, is that right?

Correct. 0-5 in the League (Kember sacked) and 1-2 in the FA Cup a couple of seasons ago

The home game against Watford will be the 100th Football League/Premiership game between us.

Millwall appear to be the club we have faced the most number of times.
By my reckoning it's:-
86 League.
10 FA Cup & League Cup.
20 Southern League.
26 Wartime Leagues.
14 Others (inc that Anglo Italian, also Kent Senior Shield etc. ).
1 Abandoned game (Nov. 1950 FA Cup).
19 'Friendly' games.

In terms of Football League/Prem. only it looks like Norwich leading the way on 105.

I did some dreadful Premier League history thing on the BBC website the other day, in the 'stat bank' or whatever, it stated that we are Norwich City's bogey team, and that they are ours, providing the facts you mention above.

Bournemouth away in 1988 and 1989 were games that were marred with violence, over zealous policing at its worse. Fireworks thrown at the end of one game I remember.

Yes, although 92 years of it occurred during the 80s

We seemed to have an umbilical cord between Forest and us in the late 80s-1990s. Sick of the bloody sight of them. Given there were a spate of abandoned games at the City Ground, we must have travelled up there loads of times in recent years.

We always seemed to get them in Simod/FA Cup etc, followed each other up and down the divisions too.

But a wonderful quaffing session. beginning at 10am, in the Harvester, (Copper Dean??), just down the hill from the ground ..... I think.

Don't know if this was the same pub, but can recall glasses being thrown, also fights between fans and stewards and trouble after the game. It was a bit like playing Brighton at times.

Bournemouth? eh?
Played them in the 1970s and the 1980s.
At the old Dean Court.
Which has now been totally re-built, and pitch re-aligined, new stadium in my book.
There was a riot (virtually) at a Palace game at Dean Court, 87/88 or 88/89, serious bother with the Police, remember it well.
