The Rules :

Only 3 months to go now so time to dust off the spreadsheet, convene the stewards meetings and decide on the Rules and Regulations for 2016.
If any one would like to suggest any changes feel free, but this thread is not democratic and the power hungry despot in charge will as per F1 make his own mind up. Changes also have to be easy to implement but Master Yoda has offered to mod the spreadsheet so perhaps we should consider his suggestion of "more points for being one pos out rather than the basic 2pts for being top 5." Any other suggestions welcome.

2016 GP Drivers and Teams :
Blue colour indicates a confirmed 2016 contract
Green indicates a confirmed/current Test Driver for the team
Magenta indicates we don't know if they will be taking part.

McLaren have recruited former Volkswagen motorsport boss Jost Capito as the new overall head of their Formula 1 programme. The German, 57, will be appointed chief executive officer of McLaren Racing, reporting to chairman Ron Dennis. Capito will join at an unspecified date to be agreed between McLaren and VW.
Jonathan Neale, who had been in that role following the sacking of Martin Whitmarsh in early 2014, has been moved out of the racing department. Neale will be chief operating officer of the McLaren Technology Group.

Other point of interest is that Capito has been running the VW Rally team for the past few years and has made them unbeatable having previously done the same job for Ford. Great news for McLaren.

From the BBC

Manor have signed former Ferrari chief designer Nikolas Tombazis as chief aerodynamicist.
Tombazis, sacked by Ferrari after nine years following their winless 2014 season, joins the back-of-the-grid team with immediate effect. It is the latest in a series of changes as Manor try to improve their form.

The team finished last in 2015 but have secured Mercedes engines and recruited Dave Ryan, who spent 30 years at McLaren, as racing director. Manor technical director John McQuilliam said Tombazis would "provide us with the strength to design and develop consistently competitive racing cars to help steer us towards our long-term ambitions".
Manor are still without a team principal following the resignation, at the end of last season, of founder John Booth and Graeme Lowdon, who was the team's president and sporting director.

The team have yet to announce any drivers for 2016. Indonesian GP2 driver Rio Haryanto has been linked to the team and is reported to have secured £10m in backing from the Indonesian government.Among the other contenders are former McLaren driver Kevin Magnussen, who is also in the frame to replace Pastor Maldonado at Renault, and Manor's 2015 drivers - Englishman Will Stevens, American Alexander Rossi and Spaniard Roberto Merhi.

Hi MasterYoda, thanks for the offer and of course I would consider it assuming we decide to change any of the rules, points etc. Ridcully, my predecessor as the person who runs this thread and who created the original spread sheet is still around so we would have to negotiate a transfer fee during the window. :)

I'm fairly certain it wouldn't be overly tricky to say add say 3 to the score if the position was only one out - so giving 5 instead of 2. If anything in this era of mercedes dominance it might help add a new dynamic.

From the BBC:
Formula 1 bosses have agreed to reduce the cost of engines for customer teams. Two days of talks have resulted in a deal to cut prices as well as ensure the whole grid is supplied, sources at governing body the FIA said. In return for lower prices, it was agreed F1 would stick with the existing V6 turbo hybrid engines until at least 2020. Details are still being finalised, with the intention for the new regulations to come into force in 2018.
Four engine manufactures - Mercedes, Ferrari, Renault and Honda - supply the power units for the 11 teams on the grid. The lower price at which engines will be sold in the future has not been made public at this stage.
In a further measure to help reduce costs, it has been agreed that drivers will be limited to three gearboxes per season - down from the current limit of five.

Surely that gearbox rule is going to result in even more grid penalties?

BBC report:

Germany's Pascal Wehrlein is to drive for the Manor team in 2016. The 21-year-old, who was the reserve driver for Mercedes in 2015, takes the first of two vacant Manor seats.
Wehrlein won the DTM German Touring Car Championship in 2015 and has experience of driving F1 cars in testing. "Pascal is a sharp driver with a very promising future," said Manor boss Stephen Fitzpatrick. "We've chosen a driver with the talent and hunger to match our ambitions."
Wehrlein, who has a deal with Manor for the entire season, said: "Manor Racing is a great place for me to start my F1 racing career. I'm very pleased to be here. It's a small and totally focused team and I soon hope to know everyone."

From the BBC:
British driver Will Stevens has been dropped by Manor for the 2016 season and replaced by Indonesian Rio Haryanto. The 24-year-old has not scored a point after 18 grands prix starts.
Stevens secured the Manor drive last year through a sponsorship package believed to be about £6m. Haryanto, who is bringing in about £10m in sponsorship from Indonesia's state oil company, finished fourth in last year's GP2 series, winning three races.

Manor... The team to go to if you fancy a bit of a joy ride. It's a bit hard to take them seriously to be honest.

The only things in history Virgin / Marussia / Manor will be remembered for is Jules Bianchi getting a 9th place, and then ploughing into a crane and killing himself. (:( RIP Jules)

Oh and Maria de Villota. :( (RIP)

Pertamina Oil Co. and the Indonesian Government stumped up the cash. I think roughly 50/50 between them. His dad used to drive in the 80s and has helped him throughout his career

His past career ticks a few boxes. Only aged 23. Started karting at aged 6, came up through the ranks starting in Formula Asia in 2008, so only aged 15, various other Formula and then GP3 aged 17 and GP2 aged 19.

Whenever I watched GP2 or GP3 I always looked out for him, concentrating on the lower half of the top 10. However last year he started off with a bang but them tailed off to finish 4th overall.

Hope he does well, but he needs a better car than Manor. Would be good for Indonesia, who have high hopes of hosting an F1 race in the next 5 years.

Sebastian Vettel has lead proceedings for a second consecutive day at the opening pre-season F1 test after putting in a blistering lap on the new purple-banded ultra-soft Pirelli tyres while the majority of teams ran marathon numbers of laps.
Vettel and Daniel Ricciardo were involved in a tussle for top spot in the final 45 minutes of the morning session as the Ferrari and Red Bull drivers moved on to the quicker super-soft compounds before both debuting the new purple-banded ultra-soft Pirelli.
The four-time F1 world champion made an instant improvement with a best lap of 1m 22.810s, nearly two seconds under Nico Rosberg's pole position time for the 2015 Spanish Grand Prix, and Ricciardo struggled to match the pace of SF16-H.
The top two's times were unrivalled for the rest of the day as none of the other drivers strapped on the ultra-soft compounds while marathon amount of long runs and race simulations were completed in the afternoon session.
However, Renault did not produce as much joy after Jolyon Palmer's RS16 shuddered to a halt at turn three midway through the afternoon session with a suspected engine breakdown, causing a red flag. Palmer's day was ended there and then as Renault confirmed it would complete no further running until it fixed the issue, finishing the day bottom of the number of lap charts on 42 and only above Max Verstappen's Toro Rosso on quickest lap times.
Leading the lap charts was Nico Rosberg in the Mercedes who notched up a mammoth 172 laps, the majority of which on the medium compound tyre, which largely accounted for him finishing fourth on the timesheet. Focusing purely on performance, data collection and set-up the Mercedes looks in ominous form without completely stretching itself in a qualifying-style run.
As a result, Sergio Perez jumped into third place having set his best time of 1m 23.650s on the red super-soft Pirellis as he made his debut in Force India's VJM09 having taken over from new development driver Alfonso Celis.

Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone says the introduction of a new elimination qualifying format will be delayed until the fifth race of the season. He said the software controlling the new system would not be ready for the start of the season on 18-20 March. "My guys who do the timing said: 'Mr E, we don't want to be put in the position because we don't think we can get it done properly in time'," he said. He added the system "wasn't my idea" and he wanted a different approach. Ecclestone said the new system would go ahead, however.

Governing body the FIA announced on Wednesday that a new qualifying system had been agreed that would feature the slowest car being eliminated every 90 seconds in three knock-out sections of qualifying.

Formula 1 bosses have decided to press ahead with the introduction of a new elimination-style qualifying system from the start of the season. The idea was voted through unchanged on Friday by the world council of F1's governing body the FIA, sources say.
It means the system will be used for the first time at the season-opening Australian Grand Prix on 19 March. The World Council has decided to ignore suggestions for tweaks to avoid an empty track at the end of qualifying.

The decision comes despite F1 commercial boss Bernie Ecclestone saying last week he had been told the timing software and on-screen television graphics could not be changed for the Melbourne race. Senior figures pushed back at Ecclestone on that issue, and it is understood his company, which is responsible for timing and graphics, has now said it can be done in time.

From the BBC:

Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel set the fastest time on the final day of Formula 1 pre-season testing. The four-time champion ensured Ferrari were fastest on five of the eight days in Spain. World champions Mercedes are regarded as favourites before the first race of the season in Australia on 18-20 March. But Vettel said: "The new car gives us the chance to close the gap. How much? We need to be a bit more patient."

The German's fastest time at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya was just 0.04secs slower than the fastest time of the winter set by his team-mate Kimi Raikkonen on Thursday, on the ultra-soft tyre. Vettel was using the super-soft, which is said to be between 0.4-0.6 seconds slower, and was 0.282 seconds quicker than Toro Rosso's Carlos Sainz, who was on the ultra-soft tyre. Headline lap times in pre-season testing are a notoriously poor guide to form, as they are subject to a huge number of variables and teams do not reveal the specification in which their cars are running.

Williams' Felipe Massa and Force India's Sergio Perez were next on the super-soft tyre and world champion Lewis Hamilton fifth on the medium tyre, 1.6secs down on Vettel on a tyre regarded as about 1.7secs slower than the super-soft. Nico Rosberg believes there will be little between Mercedes and Ferrari in Australia. "We know that Ferrari is very close," he said. "They've been very quick. All of the teams have their strategists, so we know more or less what fuel the other teams are running and they know our fuel. So we know more or less where we are compared to Ferrari - that's why I say it's close. But we're not sure if we are ahead or behind." Mercedes have shown remarkable reliability over the testing period and have done so many miles that they have been using two drivers per day rather than the normal one to avoid tiring them out. However, they had their first on-track stoppage because of a transmission problem on Hamilton's car shortly before lunch on Friday. Hamilton said: "Best test ever in terms of how many laps, but it is not the best test in terms of it gets a bit boring after a while going around and around without learning too much. It has put us in a good position for the first race, but I have never been a fan of testing. It's been gruelling. The car just goes and goes and goes. So on one hand it has been great; on the other it's like: 'Oh my god, how many more laps have I got to go?'" Hamilton said he was pleased to have the reliability problem in testing so the team could fix it in time for the first race.

Jenson Button was seventh fastest in the McLaren-Honda on ultra-soft tyres, just over 0.1secs quicker than the Renault of British novice Jolyon Palmer on super-softs.

Fastest times
1 Sebastian Vettel (Ger) Ferrari 1:22.852
2 Carlos Sainz (Spa) Toro Rosso 1:23.134
3 Felipe Massa (Brz) Williams 1:23.644
4 Sergio Perez (Mex) Force India 1:23.721

If any one would like to suggest any changes feel free, but this thread is not democratic and the power hungry despot in charge will as per F1 make his own mind up. Changes also have to be easy to implement but Master Yoda has offered to mod the spreadsheet so perhaps we should consider his suggestion of "more points for being one pos out rather than the basic 2pts for being top 5." Any other suggestions welcome.

If it's not too late, I would like to propose a very simple scoring system. It seems silly for a 1st place prediction to be worth the most when it's generally the easiest position to predict. So my suggestion is 5 points for each correct position prediction and 1 point for each incorrect prediction that's elsewhere in the top 5. Pole and fastest lap could be 5 points each too.

Red Bull have already suggested Toro Rosso could start the year ahead of them.Force India look pretty good,Williams still do and McLaren will probably improve enough to get themselves in the midfield battle.Difficult to tell.

Hi folks, been a bit busy so not had time to rethink the scoring for this year despite some good suggestions. Perhaps next year?
Master Yoda suggested 2pts (as now) for an incorrect placing in the top five with 3 more points if only one place out. The more I think about this the more I like it.
Biggus Mikkus suggested some points for the "Driver of the Day". My question is who picks this and it might favour a naughty boy who started from the back. Could create some decent arguments on the thread though :)
Swamp Thing suggested 5 points for all correct forecasts in the top five. with 1 point for an incorrect forecast. 5 points for Pole and fastest lap. Like it and might even suggest an even more different scoring system with a higher score for getting place 5 correct as against first. It has been harder this past few seasons to get 5th correct.

Due to my tardiness in sorting this out I don't think we can apply changes this season but would like views on the above with the possibility of introducing change for the post summer break.

I thought start of Q1 it worked well. But it really doesn't work in Q2 or 3.

I give it another race before it gets altered. The thing is normally in the old style quali if Force India finished 9th and 10th I would have been happy. Today as the clock ticked down I lost my excitement as it felt like we missed out on any of those moments where you think, **** we might sneak a cheeky 4th place here.

There's just something not quite right about it and looking at the qualifying as a whole, it all seemed a bit inevitable in the end. Mercedes and Ferrari the top two, Manor, Haas and Sauber the worst three teams.

In fact I think it only really worked in Q1 because it forced all the cars out from the start, after the crap cars started being eliminated, it all became a bit inevitable really.

Decent first race. Typical that both Hulk and Checo pitted then the crash happened the very next lap and that compketely screwed our race strategy.

Even though it was a very familiar result of ROS, HAM, VET, I felt the season showed sone promise. I kind of tailed off the last two seasons through sheer boredom, but I think this year shows some real promise. All teams look decent, even Werhlein in the Manor looked like he might do something at one point. Also like to mention Joleyon Palmer. Seen him a fair bit in GP2 over the last 5 years and got to say even though he didn't make the points on debut, he certainly looked like he belonged in F1 unlike say someone like Max Chilton who just bought their place.

Well done to Grosjean and Haas, that's a great effort.

Toro Rosso won't be too happy, supposed to be picking up points early in the season.

My own work season is starting to go into full swing, and doubt I'll be able to catch much in the way of coverage this year. The trouble with working in the events industry and having most of your work at weekends!

So, Mike, I would like to lock these predictions in until further notice please. Fingers crossed a bit of boring sameness creeps into the season and it pays off again. I think I ended up top-5 last year with a similar strategy!

For those who missed the news, McLaren's Fernando Alonso has been barred from racing in the Bahrain Grand Prix after suffering "rib fractures" and a partially collapsed lung in his 180mph crash in Australia.
Medics made the call after conducting scans on the two-time world champion.
He will be replaced by McLaren reserve driver Stoffel Vandoorne, who will be making his F1 debut in Bahrain.

Btw little al, if you did pick Alonso in your first selection, you were the only one who did.

He's back on pole -

The world champion subsequently escaped punishment for reversing in the pit lane, which could have seen him stripped of pole. But stewards only handed Hamilton a reprimand, after governing body the FIA said "no clear instruction was given on where he should park".

We've ended up with a situation where races are better than qualifying. They need to revert to the old system of qualifying.Predictably a wider choice of tyres and making starts harder has had a positive effect.Wouldn't mind getting rid of DRS.

It is much better, although doesn't DFS (admittedly, very artificially) add to the spectacle, by aiding overtaking ?

Hooray!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Formula 1 is set to return to its 2015 qualifying format after teams won a power battle with the sport's bosses. An elimination qualifying system was used at this season's first two races but met with widespread criticism. Jean Todt, president of governing body the FIA, and F1 commercial boss Bernie Ecclestone have now agreed a return to last season's format is "in the interests of the championship".
It could be in place for next week's Chinese Grand Prix. It still needs to be approved by the F1 Commission and the FIA World Council, but an FIA spokesman told BBC Sport he was "optimistic" it would be approved.
Todt and Ecclestone had been adamant there would be no return to 2015. But their hand was forced by a unanimous stance from all 11 teams, saying they would not back another new proposal.

Just watching a replay of the race.
Hmmm if Bernie wants more exciting racing he should be looking for more ways to have Ferrari and Mercedes racing from the back!

And with 7 laps to go Button has just posted the fastest lap!! WTF!!??? Have Honda got their engine sorted out??

Losing the bonus points and now I'm off the top!

 A few drivers went for supersofts at the end.Button did supersoft, medium, medium, supersoft.I think he killed the tyres trying to catch Alonso and dropped away in the last few laps. But McLaren are definitely more competitive and will probably make Q3 in some races.

Had a coffee with Maidstoned, and told him about Hamilton. He said he was not arsed with changing his picks, but loves me till the end of time!!!!
Thats the last time I grab an Empire for him at W.H.Smith at Gatwick I can tell you.
