5-6 top liners, average to good beyond that.

Soft early draw will help.

Might be on the money there Bung.

Not sure what to make of that effort by the Tiges. Blues were hard at it and had a crack, Richmond looked poor for 105 of the 120 mins.

Round 1 I know, but I thought the Tiges had so much to play for and prove early doors. 4points in the bag though, so we shall see.

Might be an idea to wait till the Blues start their ascent up the ladder in years to come and coincide that with a sizeable wager on Cripps for the Brownlow. Ball winning beast!

Martin, Rance, Cotchin, Deledio, perhaps Reiwoldt maybe Ellis, falls away very quickly after that talent wise, for the Tigers.

Biggest problem with the list is they haven't been able to snare an absolute gun, through the past few years trading.

Not happy with Hahn Super Dry being the beer of choice or the $13.50 for a Jim Beam.

Need a new coach with a better game plan. How many times do we have to watch this mob on a Friday ******* night. My god they're boring to watch.

Had some texts from mates who are all members with the tiges, have been for 30+ years. They firmly believe he's (Hardwick) is no bloody good and he's had long enough.

Maybe, but Carlton and Essendon have repelled more inside 50 attacks in the first 4 rounds. It tells me that Ross realises they must score more and in re-jigging the gameplan, are being hurt the other way. Interesting to see if he starts introducing young players to the team (remembering the state he left St.Kilda in when he walked).

No chance. He stays with the tried and tested, hence the reason they cant play another style/brand of footy. Great coach defensively, shit going the other way. Stubborn as a mule is Ross Lyon, the game has moved on from his Sydney/St Kilda days and he hasn't.

This seasons situation has given them an out and they are taking it.
There were some disgusting efforts today and the AFL set the edict that top ups need to have been on an AFL list in the past 2 years.

That deliberate out of bounds against McDonald was probably the worst decision of 2016 so far.

Worst of all it was made by a former player in Jordan Bannister. Just awful.

If they are calling those and incidents where a player clears the footy out of a pack 30-40 metres down field which eventually bounces out of bounds and gets pinged they should rename the law. It is definitely not deliberate.

Not sure if anyone noticed a play earlier where Brent Harvey could have easily taken possession of a footy that was headed for the boundary, he chose to leave it for his opponent to take possession, that player's momentum took the ball out of play. Harvey immediately appeals to the umpire for a deliberate out of bounds free kick. The appealing to umpires in these incidents are quickly becoming a blight on the game. Terrible.

Bones14

The SANFL is using a rule that rewards a free kick for any kick or handball that goes out of bounds without being touched this season.
They have also capped the interchange rotations to 60 per team.

I was at the Port v North game and to tell the truth, didn't notice the rule in place. Good positive footy with faster transitions. Umpires put the whistle away for long periods. Dougal Howard dominated that standard.

Ruck Contest (http://www.aflcommunityclub.com.au/index.php?id=132)

Law 15.4.5 (f) A Field Umpire shall award a free kick against a player who makes prohibited contact with an opposition player by unduly pushing, bumping, holding or blocking whilst contesting a bounce, throw up or boundary throw in.

Free Kick -

Straight arm block preventing opponent contesting the ball
Early leap making contact with opponent, then lands on ground and hits the football
Crosses the centre circle line going past the flight of the football then makes contact with opponent
Makes contact with opponent whilst not watching the football
Obvious push, bump, block or hold
Crosses the centre circle line before ball is bounced or thrown up
Straight leg or foot - block

Former AFL Grand Final Umpire Shaun Ryan offers his advice on how to adjudicate ruck contests.

When we talk about ruck contests the primary thing that we need to have in the forefront of our mind is that the ruckman who wants to contests the ball shall be given every opportunity to do so. So really, from an umpire’s point of view, if you bring it back to the bare basics you should be looking out for the ruckman who is trying to prohibit the other ruckman from contesting the ball.

Dumb from Hickey.

oz_da II

The Crows should concentrate on getting to the footy first and working on their tackling techniques, especially Scott Thompson, instead of whining about the umpires.

He put his arm out across Goldstein's leading leg to thwart Goldstein's jump at the footy, went past the position of the "ball up" to get in that position (see red line below) and didn't have his eyes on the ball when he initially makes contact with Goldstein.

I watched most of the game and the umpiring wasn't very noticeable, people only started getting worked up when the stat was pointed out by the broadcasters. One big miss was a headlock on Hardigan which went unnoticed (could have been positioning) and led to a goal. Thought a lot of Crows were sloppy with their tackling while Footscray were spot on with their techniques. Something the Crows need to work on.

The worst and most influential decision of the night was the Adcock deliberate out of bounds when Eddie Betts was the last player to touch the footy, led directly to a Crows goal with about 7-8 minutes to go.

Sauce Jacobs giving away the dumb 50 metre penalty near the end wasn't too clever from a veteran of the club.

Bones14

The hickey one is a free kick to the absolute letter of the law I'll grant that. But if you pay that then seriously there should be no body contact from above the waist from a ruckman at any stoppage.
I don't care who wins or loses but the interpretation of the rules at present is very ordinary. The more they **** with the rules, the harder it is to umpire. Basic rules should apply to umpiring. If your not 100% sure, don't pay it. The adcock one was disgraceful, same as mc Donald last week. Hickey one is very rough, Harvey got a cheap one tonight. Tis a worrying trend at present.
Not a fan as such but the Saints have copped some average ones late in games.

Not really. Eyes on the ball, don't stop your opponent from contesting the footy by grabbing and/or going past the position of the ball up/bounce. That's a block.

If you do that you can make all the contact you want other than obvious pushes or a Ty Vickery roundhouse.

Yep I get all that Oz.
My inference is he was in position first (1 metre) rule, so therefore he should be able to protect the space within a metre of the ball drop. He didn't charge Goldstein or bodycheck really, it was a stiff arm and he should be allowed to protect the space he is given by the 1 metre rule. Ruck freekicks are the worst to get a handle on and nobody knows 75/80% of the time which way they're going. The advantage rule from a ruck free kick is also a massive blight on the game.

Strange game, we controlled the match like we did against the dogs without kicking away on the scoreboard and st kilda looked out on their feet halfway through the last quarter. It's an interesting debate Kayjay. I think his power and explosiveness is what captures your eye first and foremost. His ability to win the contested ball is also a bit of a feature. Downside is his foot skills are average or below for Afl level tbh, as is his goalkicking which comes back to his skills. Harsh opinion but fair I think.

Bonus for me being a cats fan is he takes some heat off Selwood, which in turn flows down the chain, ie Guthrie, Duncan, Caddy etc get more of it.

Simon O'Keeffe-fair point
Joel Reynolds- yep, no good
Shane Harvey- was a risk, but all clubs take risks on these types
Ricky Dyson- dreadful
Jay Nash- simply no good
Jay Neagle- father son, put a lot of time/effort into him for no reward
Jake Melksham- serviceable for the ability he has. Ability lacking though
David Myers- not good enough
Scott Gumbleton- oh dear, what a waste of space he was, faaark
Kepler Bradley- see above

Some shockers in there

Oh forgot your captain as well

TBF, he had some fairly average injuries, and the medical reports weren't great on him. We took a risk and its paid off in spades. I know of one of the Cats ass coaches that wasn't keen at the time, but was made to look a bit silly afterwards.

TEAM OF SELECTS!
Jake Melksham

Went Pick 10, Fyfe Pick 20
Claremont must have hidden him away for the Dockers

Story on Fyfe's late draft selection is that clubs, particularly Port who had three first round selections that year, had him inked in as a key forward and were worried about his spindly frame at the time.

Geelong has an ass coach? Maybe those rumours about the Scott boys have some substance? :D

Haha Jim. Ass coaches are everywhere in the AFL, or so I'm told;)

The Scott boys rumors, hmmmm. Nervous conversation that one.

The Toronto Maple Leafs (NHL) of 1944-45 had an Ass Man and an Ass Train.

Can someone tell me how Jarryd Blair gets a game? Feck me, he is the worst small forward in the game at present. He was seriously shocking yesterday, no impact, no pressure, soft.............................................. Ahhhh the list goes on.

If you're referring to McMillan, should get 1 week for simulation,
and throw in a 2nd week for terrible acting.

Hilarious stuff listening to Norf fans bombarding SEN, complaining about the frees to Lindsay Lougainis not being paid.

You couldn't make it up. :D

Poor kicking cost them the game last night, nothing to do with the umps. :clown:

Listening to talkback radio yesterday, it seems that David Mundy and an Essendon player were both penalised a free kick against for throwing an opponents football boot away.
I know Oz_da has been known to flirt with the rulebook at times, when the f**k did this become a rule???
Also on Friday night, the umpire held up the game until Ceglar had put his boot back on.
Did anyone see that one?

$30,000 out of pocket for the pleasure of receiving Chinese whispers. I wonder if Geoff Walsh will "help him out", probably should...

A free kick for removing an obstruction from the field of play? Seemed a bit harsh. Mundy did throw it into Row Z of Subiaco Oval though.

Pool ol' Geoff is having a bit of a bad run. He was viewed on Channel Bruce's cameras having a very heated argument with the North club doctor a few weeks ago.

Once again my club flatter to deceive. When we're the hunters, we're a good team. When we're hunted, we really are an average side. Well done to the saints, great pressure, leg speed and perseverance.

Don't want to be nasty, but he really is a front runner. Does my ****en head in Stevie Motlop.
We've got some real issues at present. Strange saying that being in the top 4, but Chris Scott needs to get some ****en leg speed down back. You'll never get out of a full press unless you have elite kicking (which we don't have) or genuine leg speed to run and carry.
So disappointing, collingwood, Carlton and the saints losses.

A lot of Bears players seem more keen on racking up SuperCoach points than doing what is required to win a game of footy. I'd put the captain in that category. Big change needed.

Often this season I'll watch them and they'll start off fantastic kicking the first two or three goals, opposition gets one or two back, heads drop, skill levels do the same and ten minutes later it is game over.

Lack of leadership.
Have to go with the Carlton model of getting in someone fresh to coach and have a look at the captaincy/leadership group.
Will take time as the key defenders/forwards need games under the belt.
If Mitch Robinson is leading your b&f....

Without a doubt.

In the same category of duds as Neeld, Rhode, Primus etc, retarding the development of their kids and unable to establish any sort of winning standards, culture or mentality amongst the players.

Brisbane have some really good kids on their list and could be a decent side sooner rather than later, if they act now before too much damage is done.

kayjay

look at how many of the kids have walked as well.
Need the culture re-established.
Unfortunately, not a big enough market for two clubs.
Suns struggling as well.
Ardent Southport fans haven't come across in the way the AFL were hoping.
