A fabulous end to the season, Inter Milan at home then a holiday to Switzerland and a chance to see palace win the return leg at the San Siro. Happy days!

As far as I know there is no programme for the away game. This is the closest I managed, their club magazine of the time, which I got off Italian ebay. Tiniest mention of the Palace game ever in it, so just about a connection!!!

http://footballprogrammecentre.co.uk/forum/userpix/597_inter1_1.jpg

It made the cover of World Soccer at the time

and also the book of football

(I think there was another issue with a shot from the same game)

Go to ITN Source for brief BBC highlights of the Inter game and Amazon for some rather nice jigsaws from the same match.

i was at the Cagliari game. There were certainly a lot of Italians there all chanting 'Riva Riva' he was obviously a very popular player.

Memory failing - can't remember the score, but is it true that we were the first English team to win in the San Siro ?

Yes. We won 2-1, but I can't remember the scorers.

Went with my dad. Someone gave him a ticket in the old stand which i had while he went in the enclosure (our normal spot). Brief highlights were somewhere on TV where my dad was in one of the crowd shots.

[edit - just watched the clip http://www.itnsource.com/en/shotlist/RTV/1971/05/30/BGY508050500/?s=crystal%20palace%20inter%20milan - good job that wasn't henessy in goal he'd have been slaughtered!]

Never went but do have a match program from one of the fixtures knocking about in a box in my mums attic.

For some reason I think it was Lazio. Did we play Lazio ?

played Lazio in 1972/73 season (2 years after the Cagliari/Inter matches)was first game after beating Chelsea when Big Mal had become manager, put a reserve XI out because of important match at Sheff Utd on the Saturday, beat Lazio 3-1 (John Craven hat-trick) then lost at Sheff U at the weekend, we also beat Verona 4-1 at Selhurst and beat Bari 1-0 away and drew 2-2 at Fiorentina (was not home and away against the same team that year), then played Newcastle over two legs in the 'English semi -final, 0-0 at home walloped 5-1 away, I thought Newcastle went on to win the final but I could be wrong on that. I'm sure there is old threads on this.

I went to all those games and have the programmes. It kicked off in the Whitehorse when we played Lazio.

Every second page in the programme was advertising fags.

I went to all of these, collected autographs at the time and got most of the Italians who were at the World Cup.
Fantastic times.

Yep those of us in E2 in the sparse Palace support enjoyed trading snooker or golf balls with the scum. :D.

Great memories brought back on this thread. (Don't recall seeing the clip of the Internazionale ever before - thanks.)

Seeing those what seemed exotic playing strips and fancy dan players at Selhurst Park was fantastic. Daft to think that we assumed all the Italian fans were London waiters skiving off work.

I went to both the home games.

I wonder if there is any footage of our win in the San Siro - would be well worth a look.

Following links on former Palace players - Bob Spottiswood who later managed Inter Milan - found this photo of Sandro Mazzola. Would have been taken when they played at Selhurst Park. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/cc/Sandro_mazzola_inter.jpg

Took me back to those heady days :p

I remember seeing Riva playing centre forward for Lazio from memory. Seemed incredible to see him at Palace having watched him in the World Cup final against Brazil. From memory he was sent off for deliberate hand ball but I may be mistaken.

Riva played against us for Caligari, I think, in the midweek prior to the Inter home game.

I don't know how suspensions worked (if at all) but he definitely played in the return leg in Sardinia as he scored both their goals.

Now that is a stylish kit. Genuine Italian chic. It's depressing to compare it to what we'll be turning out in this season.

Inter's kit is one of my favourites ever. I love how simplistic the Black and Blue always looks.:p
