also said this which is quite amusing
Tweet one:
Parish on #cpfc future. Jokes at Gold's expense: “The Government wouldn’t give me a stadium. I did ask them.”
Tweet Two:
Parish: "I'm still trying to work out how £15m for a £750m stadium is a good deal for the taxpayer [...] I'm only jealous."

this is very good for me (not so good for the mrs) as we are in the states for most of July and a bit of august. Wonder if it's the same tour as West Ham who (from some googling) will be on the west coast where we will be for most of the trip!

I would obviously love an east coast tour but wouldn't mind going to Portland. They won the MLS Cup last year & their fans are awesome and make a great atmosphere. I haven't travelled there yet, but have friends there so accommodation is easy I was disappointed DC United didn't get an away game with them this year. Would love to see Palace there & the 2 sets of fans together.

This isn't like the old days where they'd just let them sit on the plane and do whatever they like. They're prepared for the flight days in advance - so as to get them used to the time difference and the fatigue. Sport science works in every facet of what the club do now.

Palace fan in Cincinnati here. I'm trying to get in touch with ownership of FC Cincinnati for info on tickets in the away section, pre-game drinks, etc., and I'll share here whatever I learn.

A bit about the club. They are brand new, just having been formed within the past year and having played their first non-exhibition game a little over a month ago. They play in the USL, which is the league Glenn Murray briefly played in. It's considered to be the third tier of American soccer behind the MLS and NASL, but it's more or less equal to the NASL. (There is no promotion/relegation system here.)

The club has the backing of a very wealthy Cincinnati family, and they put their money where their mouth is. Hired former Premier League footballer John Harkes to manage at the highest salary in the league, and also spent the highest combined salary on their players. Their goal is to show that the community will provide enough support to become an MLS team. So far, the community has proven them right, as they've twice broken the league record for attendance already and had over 23,000 fans this weekend. I'd imagine they could have 40,000+ for the Palace exhibition.

Needless to say, I'm very excited that Palace is coming here.

Edit: As a heads up for anyone planning to visit, the stadium is downtown and walk-able from just about any downtown hotel. There are plenty of hotels in many price ranges but this is in the tourist season.

You can get to downtown (and 5 minutes walk from the stadium) on the Canada Line from the airport.

Posted on another thread but this seems to be the main one.

BC Place is downtown and within walking distance of the downtown hotels. There are lots of hotels in various price brackets but this is in tourist season. Downtown is quite safe. There is a sketchy area just to the east of downtown - between Chinatown and Gastown - but there are no tourist hotels there.

You can get straight to downtown from the airport on the Canada Line monorail.

FYI --
I just got off the phone with FC Cincinnati. Tickets for that match are going on sale in mid-June. I asked if there would be a designated section for the Palace Supporters and the guy said they hadn't worked any of that out yet, but has e-mailed me and told me that he should have an answer for me in a couple weeks time. Just wanted to share in case anyone was wondering.

Well, just about to return home from Vancouver today after a couple of weeks holiday here in Canada. The weather everywhere we've gone has been fantastic, except today it's like a typical London day - overcast & drizzling:D

Sadly, I won't be back next month, but for those of you coming for the game, you are in for a real treat. Vancouver is a wonderful city. Great hotels, lots to see, and a superb modern stadium that couldn't be more central (walking distance from all the major hotels). From what I've seen, the Whitecaps game will be a real test!
Enjoy.

Philly is really close to NYC I think it took 2 hours on Amtrak when I was there.

Amtrak is very expensive. buses take about 2 hours and are unbelievably cheap. If you shop around you can find fares as low as 10 bucks one way. Last time I went the one way fare NY-Philly, cost ten dollars. A two mile trip across town in a cab in Philly then ended up costing me thirteen dollars.

The philly section is being sold from back to front because the union are annoying so when seats get bought they open up more of the section! We've sold about 150 in philly and there are reports of a lot others that didnt know of the section or apparently wanted to sit close but not in the supporters section. Its a shame we have the "freedom" in the US to sit where ever we want at matches ha.

Cincinnati is over 200 now and probably will end up being sold our section of 350! Plus once again all those that are sitting in other spots of the stadium that we hope to connect with also!

I see that some posters are planning to spend a few days in Vancouver so here are some things I would do if I had a couple of days. The weather usually flips from spring to summer some time at the beginning of July but this year it is late. The long range forecast predicts this will happen the day after the game with rain and/or showers leading up to Tuesday.

Downtown Vancouver is quite compact and walkable. It is generally clean and safe with one exception. This is on Hastings Street east of Cambie, between Gastown and Chinatown. This is the skid row area. It is not really that unsafe during the day. You might also be surprised at the number of homeless people and beggars (panhandlers as they are called here). The City’s attitude is that they live here too so it does not attempt to hide the homeless away just to enhance the tourist experience.

If it is dry then the obvious destination is Stanley Park. This is a huge park just to the west of downtown. This contains the aquarium, cricket pitches, totem poles, a pitch and putt, beaches, an open air swimming pool and many forest trails. The seawall around the park is 10 km and you can do it by on foot, roller blade or cycle. IMO the best way is by cycle. You can rent cycles by the hour on the corner of Denman and Georgia. After circling the park you can carry on the cycle path along the side of False Creek, past Science World and the Olympic Village all the way to the beaches at Jericho and Spanish Banks. You might end up with a sore arse the next day but it is a great way to see some of the city and work off a few beers.

Granville Island is worth a half day. There is a little ferry from the south end of Howe Street (the Aquabus). The Island is former industrial land now known for artisan’s workshops and stores. There is a large indoor market for foodies.

If you want to experience something of what makes the Pacific North West unique then head for the Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia. It is out of the centre but the 44 bus from downtown will get you close. The museum has a large collection of native art, especially the work of Bill Reid. You can also see a monumental bronze by Reid at the departure level of the airport.

You will see a lot of advertising for the Capilano Suspension Bridge on the North Shore. This is expensive and very touristy. A much better option, IMO, is the Lynn Valley Suspension Bridge. It is in an ecological area, is not touristy and it is free. Right in the middle of my price range. Take the Seabus to North Vancouver then busses 229 and 227. Take stout shoes and explore a bit of the rain forest.

Also on the North Shore is Grouse Mountain. Only do this on a clear day. Take the Seabus then bus 236. There is a gondola to the top but you can walk it if you are fit. The trail is known as the Grouse Grind.

I appreciate all this will cut into drinking time. The much shorter version is to stroll around the cruise ship terminal at Canada Place and the convention centre just to the West.

For eating, fast food in Vancouver is sushi. Places everywhere. One of the best is Miko Sushi on Robson Street. Vancouver is also the home of some of the finest Chinese Restaurants outside of China. Sun Sui Wah Seafood Restaurant on Main Street is one of the best but is quite expensive. There is a good mix of reasonably priced ethnic restaurants on Denman and Davie streets. (Don’t be surprised to see men holding hands on Davie Street.) Chains like Earls, The Keg, White Spot, Milestones and so on serve more typical North American food. Food Courts in shopping malls are also OK for a quick bite.

Craft beers are all the rage at the moment. It would be impolite not to try some. http://www.canadiantraveller.com/The_Ultimate_Vancouver_Craft_Beer_Brewery_List

Jonboy - All great suggestions. I might add that a good stopping point around the seawall of Stanley Park is the Tea House restaurant. Park your bike and relax for a very civilized lunch overlooking the wonderful view to the west.
I doubt we'll get too much strenuous activity in as it would cut into my daughters' swimming pool time back at the hotel! Vancouver is a fantastic city to visit and we can't wait...

I have family in Vancouver so have been a few times, the Grouse Grind is great and Deep Cove is well worth a visit if you can get there. I'd also echo Jonboy's comments about Lynn Valley Suspension Bridge.

When I went last time my favoured watering holes were the Black Bear in North Vancouver (too far out for most I would think), Steamworks at Waterfront, Craft at Olympic Village and the Tap and Barrel at Lonsdale Quay. I've heard good things about Steel and Oak in New Westminster but didn't get out there.

If you fancy running off the beer the seawall trail is a must, it's about 14 miles but there's tonnes of places you can stop off on the way.

Last time there, the bus taking us from the German Pub to the stadium got stuck in traffic. No toilet on the bus, and most of the occupants had spent the afternoon consuming large quantities of German Lager from liter glasses. Within a minute of our arrival at Chester, Penn, a newly created, man-made stream flowed gently towards the stadium, from the nearby concrete pillars.;)

Tbh. Thunderstorms are part of leaving on the east coat of the USA, there is always a chance as the humidity is so high. The good news is that most thunderstorms are short lived, even if they are heavy. In most cases the thunderstorms happen bet 4-7pm, well at least here they do here and by early evening the skies are clear.

Question todays game is sold out so if all turn up ie 40,000 the biggest crowd we have ever played in front of for a friendly?

Some allegedly big crowds on the Chinese tours in the early 2000's, but no substantiated figures, so I'd say probably yes

Looked at my ancient Palace programmes - 1971/72 season - Palace played Feyenord in Rotterdam (lost 0-1) July 28th 1971 - 34,000 crowd.

Never discussed this game with anyone to verify it.

Crowds of 10,000 at PSV Eindhoven and ADO Hague.

1971 only 210 at Bromley v Palace Reserves and 436 for Dulwich v Palace Reserves.

Only 4,125 for home friendly with Maccabi Nathanya at Selhurst Park after the Holland tour.

It looked like there were a lot of people at the games on that South Africa tour.

Anyone remember one of those goals videos when a few of our players were watching, slightly perturbed, at some kind of slightly aggressive tribal dancing?

I was on the Holland tour and the Feyenoord crowd was big I never saw it officially announced. There were about 20 Palace fans out there so different to today's following although our home gates ( and capacity ) were far higher than now

I was only a kid back then, but Feyenord were pretty big in European football, as I recall, second only to Ajax.

1971 was the year Palace changed from Claret and Blue stripes to the Ajax style all white with two broad claret and blue stripes - similar idea to the 2016 design (nowehere near as good without the mainly white background I think).

I have not read all of this thread but am I correct in thinking that the Cincinnati coach John Harkes played for Sheffield Wednesday?

Anyone know when the management and squad arrive back in London town?

Odds Against

Senior players were on the 20:45 BA flight from to Vancouver to Heathrow last night, so should land in the next hour or so. The rest of the squad are coming back today.
