View Full Version : Ireland's All Singing, All Dancing Euro 16 Thread

Muted build-up to the competition on these boards from the Ireland fans.

Perhaps due to the hang-over from the pain at Wembley.

Perhaps because we all suspect we're going to be ridden like a sea-side donkey all around the group stages.

Perhaps because we're still amazed that we qualified from The Group of Death (Don't have Georgia on your minds, Scotchlanders! ;) )

Whatever the reason, fudge it, we're here, let's remind everyone how indefatigable and lonely we are around those fields.

Bring your hopeless optimism and eager pessimism to this thread.

I, for what it's worth, have a sneaking suspicion we're going to bumrush Belgium.

Coybig.

Oh and another thing, McGeady needs to pull his thumb out of his hole pronto, if he doesn't want to watch his career fall down the rabbit hole.

Belarussians love their children too.

I'm going to the Italy game - not expecting much but I wasn't in 1994 either and look what happened. I don't think Ireland will get that far but I hope at least they'll **** up some of the other teams expectations.

I don't think the expectation or excitement is anywhere previous years due to several factors. It no longer still feels like the first time, we were humiliated 4 years ago, we haven't played well in 15 years and couldn't beat Scotland or Poland in the qualifiers. I think the overkill of tv football has lessened our thirst for the sport too.
Having said that, I can't wait. I usually fail to enjoy being in any competition due to nerves and feel a bit crushed when we do go out. I'll only fully be able to enjoy it when we're 4 up with 10 minutes to go in the final v Portugal featuring a crying Ronaldo.

A fantastic gesture from the South. Terrible circumstances but nice that the fans can unite to pay respects to the young lad.

A few fans signing "Your Irish and you know you are", doesn't mean there's going to be a united Ireland team within 5 years ffs.

Anyway, nice to see myself in a YouTube video. Enjoyed my trip to Turners Cross that day, bar the defeat, obviously.

I think we needed England to win last to ensure that a win against Italy was enough to qualify.

Is that situation unchanged, or do we need to win by a margin now?

I have no fudging idea what's going on...

Depends on results at 6pm/9pm today and 6pm tomorrow. There is still scope for 4 points to be enough regardless of GD.
At least the BIG will know what they need (in terms of required margin) when they kick off in the final group match slot at 9pm tomorrow.
Tough ask it is, but they have the lucky breaks of being in the final group game slot and playing a team that are guaranteed 1st place already.

I think if you beat Italy you will go through, Albania obviously finish on 3 points, and I can't see us getting anything off the Germans today so I assume we will finish on 3 also.

My Uncle Sean (true this) from Dundalk phoned me last night. He said Ireland were given 5,000 tickets for the game and that loads of people were prepared to pay serious money to get one. They're like gold dust down here. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for one but I'm not very optimistic. Looks like I'll be watching the game with French friends (poolside and BBQ)!

Yeah, the ybig forum is all askers, zero offers.
Playing France of course means any spares would be very hard to get hold of.

Maybe it's best not to go to the stadium anyhow. To see my team play against the oppositions and the referee again so soon after Wembley will be hard to take. Ireland will need to be >> better than France to have any chance.

The team performed well and had the right mentality. It feels kind of ok to go out after pretty much fair refereeing. Perhaps that was a corner at the other end prior to the equalizer, but it was an honest mistake I feel.

I was there for the Italy game(the Irish totally outsang the Italians and made them all seem a bit sad) and only saw the first half of the French game on TV (I had a ticket for the Germany vs. Slovakia game the same day so that was all I could manage to see before getting the Metro to the stadium) - but like I said elsewhere, good to see the Irish make a difference in the later rounds and not just roll over, making France realise they're not that great after all and weren't born to win the tournament.
