Congrats to England that was a great performance. Good to see the positivity that Eddie Jones has given the squad.

I was at Eden Park for the Wales game. A fun game to watch but NZ are just a step ahead at the moment even when playing below par

Wales did better than I expected and I thought held the All Blacks pretty well for 60 minutes but when the AB's went up a gear we couldn't live with them.

England did very well. It'd been good if the tours had been reversed as I think we would have stood a better chance against the Aussies and England would have probably stood a better chance than us of beating the All Blacks.

I guess they thought the clock would run down and they would still need the conversion to secure a draw which wouldn't be a formality if they went over in the corner. They backed themselves to go again. To be honest I thought it was going to pay off. Fantastic test match.

Ireland beating the Springboks in their own back yard with 14 men has to be one of the greatest achievements of recent time in Test Rugby. They were down to 13 at one point. Total warriors.

Yeah, well done to the men in white. Thought we (Aus) looked really good early spreading the play and opening up the Eng defence. Gave away some schoolboy penalties in our own half that hurt us. Best team won over the course of the match which is what counts in the end. Looking forward to the second Test now, should be a belter.

There are people in this part of the world who are unfairly disparaging of the home nations' rugby. This weekend will have dispelled a few of those misconceptions. England were very solid and bounced back from the early pressure. Ireland were mighty - plain and simple. To beat the Springboks with 14 is awesome. Wales were, as evvo suggests, well beaten in the end but that doesn't detract from the first sixty minutes. I think the difference isn't so much that the All Blacks took it up a gear and more that after a body-sapping hour, the New Zealand substitutes coming on were as good as the starters - what other country can say that?

What is even more scary is that this is a relatively new group of players for the All Blacks. I reckon they must have a cloning factory somewhere on one of the islands :)

I was looking for a thread like this when Sarries beat Racing Metro a couple of weeks ago.

As for yesterday I didn't see much, but listened to the first 30 minutes of the Welsh game and it was fairly apparent how it was going to end. You cannot go toe to toe with NZ and expect to win. You'll lose intensity and they won't.

I saw the first twenty minutes of the England game, and aside from two outstanding interventions from Itoje and one of the back row basically on the try line, it looked very very ominous. The end result is tremendous but it sound's like it could have been a different result if Foley had kicked even half decently, or there was a Southern Hemisphere referee. I've since seen some limited highlights, so would be interested to know views of people who saw the whole thing.

Well, if you thought Wales was on the up, tonight just shattered your heart. 40-7 against a Chiefs team missing eight All Blacks. The taffs may have had pleanty of possession and position but they lacked creative flair to break the line and defensive steel to stop the counter-attack. Well played Waikato.

That was a painful display to endure. Their red zone was pathetic and their line out has regressed to the good old days of just handing over possession.

From one missed line out Wales managed to concede 4 tries in 12 minutes. Infuriating.

Another game where they were right there and just a lapse of concentration let the All Blacks get away and once they head in that direction there is no coming back.

Patchell had a good game and so did Faletau.

This NZ team is just devastating when you dont make your first tackles as their offloading skill is frightening.

Didnt manage to catch the England game but sounds like another fantastic performance. Glad Jones is getting the best out of this squad. Dont think talent has ever been in doubt just needed to get their heads in the right place to play their own game not this dull robotic one they had been forced into under Lancaster.

Btw the Cake Tin is a great stadium, looks like an absolute dive with no atmosphere from the tv angles but in reality is a nice little ground, good viewing angles and right in the heart of town.

Looking forward to caching a replay of the England win. Thats an awesome series win, the future looks bright finally for them.

Was in Dunedin for the final test of this series. Wales looked shattered and just completely outclassed. This ABs team is something else, squad player slip in seemlessly and youd never even notice.

The Lions tour next year is going to be brilliant. NZ is such a fantastic country outside of rugby and when you combine it with the passion for the game there is no better place to tour for me. Cant wait to try and get to as many of the games as possible.

Think id have to jump on the Jones bandwagon as well, got to go with the guy who has the current midas touch. Would take Gatland along just so he actually gets to see his family once in a while as they still live here

Quite right. In fact, they were the best side last year too and it was only the abomination that is play-offs deciding a league that took their trophy away.

FWIW, I watched one of the Welsh tests in Wellington with my uncle and all his Canes supporting mates and they felt that Cruden was the man for the AB10 jersey, because "Barrett can't kick." I'd be keen to hear what they say tonight. Barrett is an incredible all round player.

to be fair before this season he was comfortably the worst place kicking number 10 out there. This season he has been a revelation and is slotting them like a champion. His hand kicking has always been good.

He is constantly one step ahead of everyone which is why he gets so many intercepts and his try tonight showed it with his anticipation. The depth to this ABs squad is frightening.

A listening device has been found in the All Blacks room in Australia. http://www.nzherald.co.nz/sport/news/article.cfm?c_id=4&objectid=11697828

Key quotes from the story:

The Herald understands the foam of the seat appeared to have been deliberately and carefully cut to make way for the surveillance device and then sewn or glued back together to be almost undetectable. The Herald has been told that hiding the device was a highly skilled and meticulous act and whoever put it there would have needed a significant amount of time to have pulled off such an accomplished job.

The All Blacks suspected some of their team rooms may have been bugged during last year's World Cup in England but they didn't have the sort of sophisticated equipment they needed to detect any listening devices.

In Sydney, they had access to high level equipment and were able to detect the planted device - but that was after they had held a team meeting in their off-limits room the night before. If the device was working - and the indications are that it was - then whoever had access to its transmission would have heard the All Blacks' gameplan for tonight's test and their preparation plans for the week.

Wherever the All Blacks stay, they are allocated a room by the hotel where the players can gather and where private meetings about strategy, tactics and selection can take place. This room is always clearly marked as private, is usually roped off or inaccessible to anyone other than players and management and sometimes even has security personnel monitoring the entrance. If the device was planted with the intention of listening into the All Blacks, then whoever was trying to do that would also have needed to have known which room to place the chair and have been able to get it in there undetected.

I don't know how much coverage these incidents have been getting in the UK but NZ Rugby has had three high profile off field scandals lately.

Firstly, there was the Waikato Chiefs stripper shitstorm (http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=11711414). Essentially the Chiefs hired a stripper for an end of season piss-up. They then treated her so badly that, while charges were not laid, that appears to be in part due to a closing of ranks. The Rugby Union held an internal inquiry which has been universally denounced as a whitewash, including barely speaking to the victim and only at the last minute. No Chiefs were punished (beyond a telling off) and the woman was dismissed from her job. At least one sponsor has severed ties with the franchise.

Then there was the young player contracted to the Wellington Lions who, along with his brother, committed a serious assault (http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/rugby/84723870/losi-filipos-contract-terminated). At first, he was discharged without conviction, using a New Zealand law that tries to give first time offenders a second chance. However his victims (two men and two women) went to the press. Attention initially focused on the judge, though he was only following sentencing guidelines for young (17 at the time) first offenders. Then it turned out that the WRFU had known of the charges and, despite conduct conditions in his contract, had taken no action nor, as with the Chiefs, spoken to the victims. While in the resulting media furor, his contract was terminated, once again this smacked of "see no evil." (http://www.nzherald.co.nz/sport/news/article.cfm?c_id=4&objectid=11717824)

Today, it's the third time (which is not a charm) and, IMO, the least serious. But because it's so salacious and involves a prominent All Black, I'm sure it will garner massive attention, probably more than the other two. Aaron Smith had sex with a "female friend" (i.e. not his girlfriend) in a disabled toilet (http://www.nzherald.co.nz/sport/news/article.cfm?c_id=4&objectid=11723446) at Christchurch airport. He has been sent home from South Africa (http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/rugby/all-blacks/85015214/star-halfback-aaron-smith-leaves-all-blacks-tour-in-disgrace). And already one columnist has reacted furiously (http://www.nzherald.co.nz/sport/news/article.cfm?c_id=4&objectid=11723506). It's exacerbated because Smith has form: a previous relationship fell apart when he cheated with a woman trying to become a minor celebrity and he sent a naked selfie into the public domain.

However, I can't help but feel that this is the only one of the three that should be dealt with quickly and with the minimum of fuss. The only person hurt is his girlfriend, whose name and photo appears in every report (and possibly the other girl if she gets outed - the Stuff report initially published blurry pictures of her, now withdrawn). And while using disabled toilets for sex is a first order dick move, it's not at the same level as sexual or physical assault.

Of course it will all be much worse if we lose to RSA! :wallbash:

Went to a fundraiser at the local rugby club last night which was hosted by Eric Rush and Sir Gordon Tjietens was the guest speaker. Lots of other former players like Steve McDowell and Frano Botica there. Eric Rush is a brilliant host and has never ending stories. Amazing he was still captaining the NZ 7s team when he was 39. He has two teenage sons who are already bigger than him and are on the Blues books.

He was incharge of giving all the players nicknames and took the job very seriously especially stitching them up. Some of them were classics but my favourite was Caleb Ralph who was called The Mangrove due to having an indiscriminate rooting system!

Titch was not holding back now that he is no longer employed by NZ rugby. He felt the 7s side gets the shit end of the stick. He was asked for a wish list of ABs and basically all of them from Kieran Read, Fekitoa, Smith, Barrett all said they wanted to play in the Olympics and then were pulled out by the NZ rugby union. Even a week before the Olympics when NZ got an injury they went to Ben Smith and asked him to play and he spent a couple of days agonising but felt he wouldnt bring enough to the squad.

Do you think tickets will be available from the locals at a modest premium? That usually happens but is a heck of a risk. When I went to Australia in 2001 you could get a basic package with flights and hotels but it looks like you need to pay top dollar for tickets as part of a package now.

Id say it was pretty unlikely mainly due to the size of the stadiums. I have got tickets for the Blues, Chiefs, Maori ABs and Provincial Barbarians as i have a Blues season ticket and access to early sales.

Looking already a couple of those are nearly sold out and so wont even get to the general public stage of sales id imagine (theyve been on sale less than 24hrs already). For the games against Super Rugby sides then maybe but even us here have to go into a ballot for the chance to buy the Test tickets so no chance of getting those outside of a package.

Thanks. Wouldn't some people buying them domestically though be doing so to tout them?

Suppose so but you have to remember that the 3 biggest stadiums are Eden Park 50k, Wellington 35k and Dunedin at 30k and this is a Lions tour so not only do you have most of NZ wanting to watch the games you have a large number of Lions fans coming over and the price will cater to them, id be surprised if tour packages wouldnt end up cheaper.

Added to the fact that there is a domestic ballot for the Tests and only a small number of people will get tickets for them id imagine tickets for the Super games will like gold dust for people who just want to get to a Lions match. Especially with the success of this NZ side at the moment.

Dont get me wrong, im not trying to put anyone off as i cant wait for the Lions camaraderie and hope as many as possible come over, just trying to be realistic on the availability front but i may be a tad pessimistic as trying to gauge ticket sales in NZ is tricky and i dont know if they are holding some back.

I think Aus look a much better all round side these days and I think they've been a bit unlucky at times this year. At the moment its NZ, then daylight. England, Ireland and Aus are all pretty good but out of those three England have a deep player base and it tells from the bench and over a series.

He was then dumped on his arse.

Recently came back. Almost identical game, but included an excellent finish... dumped again.

If people keep (wrongly) citing Wade's defensive play, he's still no worse than the current crop, including May and Yarde (plus Roko and Solomona).

ITV4 are showing the World Cup U20s final at 3pm today if you're interested. NZ are favorites here. England are holders but have lost 5 players to the Argentina tour (the Curry brothers, Isiekwe, Maunder, Cokanasinga). But on the plus side they have the 9 and 10 that won it last year.

A winger I hadnt heard of before is apparently up for Player of the tournament and produced this superb try. England were 16-3 down at the time and came back to win 20-19.

the new laws look heavily in favour of the attacking team - allowed for little to no rucking and therefore turnovers were extremely rare. Increased the flow of the game and a lot more quick ball.
Teams are going to have to revert back to the choke tackle to slow things down again.
Was at twickenham for the double header - sarries were a class above, quins and northampton were poor and naive, irish looked well organised and fully prepared for their first season back..
Really really hope that Sarries dont get the salary cap extension that they want - their squad is already deeper than anyone else's and it just isn't sustainable.

No changes to the salary cap until, at the earliest, end of 19/20 season.

Saints are going to struggle this year. Have not replaced Picamoles. Hartley and Dorian West barely speaking to each other. Made a loss last year.

Worcs for relegation this year I suspect. Not surprised that they are up for sale.

Saracens salary cap arguments just don't hold any weight, tbh.

They currently have 5 international locks in their squad, including 2 new acquisitions who are both highly paid.

Wasps, by comparison, have 1.

Sarries want more money to keep hold of Itoje? How about letting one of your other international locks go and save some cash there?

Falcons owner has it spot on - they can't afford to spend anywhere near the cap so increasing it will just create a bigger gap. Until 9 of the 12 teams can afford to spend 90% of the cap, it shouldn't go up (his words, not mine!).

Another streaky Wasps win in tough conditions against a team fighting for everything. Will take that.

Queenies next.
