Always take an interest in Croatia as I've a few relatives from there, actually backed them to win the tournament! Impressive in the first game against a decent Turkish side. Surprised Kovacic is on the bench again. Dario Srna also playing just a few days after the death of his father, huge respect!

Hrvatska!

It was Dinamo fans against the Croatian FA, former owner Mamic and Suker. I don't think they care if he is fined or Croatia get chucked out. A hell of a lot of bad blood between Dinamo fans and Mamic, which is very well documented.

It wasn't. Traditionally Dinamo Zagreb and Hajduk Split are the 2 biggest clubs in Croatia, Dinamo are obviously from the north, and Split the south, and hate each other with a passion, majority probably wouldn't hesitate in seriously injuring or even killing 'the enemy' given half the chance, but, when it's national duty, they actually come together, it would take something serious for a fight to break out between while following Croatia.

What happened was a protest against Mamic, to put it nicely, the dictator of Croatian football. Not the best way to go about it, but as we know, those from Eastern Europe and the Bulkans have a very different mindset!

From a BBC report on tonights match
Croatia supporters fighting amongst themselves in a reaction to England fans drinking in bars and singing songs. Another disgraceful episode for english football fans abroad as they once again shame our great nation.
French riot police reacted to the disgraceful scenes at the Croatia match by tear gassing the English fans in the bars and stopping them from singing said songs. Then made the bars stop serving them alcohol.
The BBC understands that following the disgraceful scenes at the Croatian match UEFA are going to carry out their sanction to kick England out of the tournament, whilst apologising to the Russians and telling them they can send their supporters back to France as UEFA now have evidence that it was the English singing in bars about leaving the EU and having a drink that started was the sole cause of the trouble. The Russian fans so innocently involved in all thr flashpoints in Marseilles will now get free tickets to enjoy the rest of the tournament.

Was it not a protest against Clattenburg's Cup Final performance?

:)

Although I would hasten to add that if you can imagine Clattenburgs disgraceful antics in that game and then multiply that across multiple matches which favour Man United, time and time again (and lets be honest, it requires no imagination) then you get a picture of the loathing that many Croatian fans feel towards their own footballing establishment.

This is not a bad, basic explanation...

https://www.theguardian.com/football/2016/jun/18/why-croatia-fans-disrupt-euro-2016-match-czech-republic

What it does not really expand on are the regional stresses in Croatia between Dalmatia in the south (Hadjuk Split) and the north (Dinamo Zagreb) and that whilst the principle personal targets of this have been accused of taking money from Dinamo, there is a history of Dinamo being given state protection and privilege at the expense of Hadjuk since almost the first year of Croatian independence.

Mat you must have been to a couple of Croat League games down the years... What's the standard like? I know a lot of their players end up in the big leagues but surprising the League seems so poor given how well the national team do, always competitive... Can only remember them failing to qualify for one major tournament since independence.

Have an interest in the Balkan area... Spent an hour or so yesterday reading about the war and why all the Countries wanted to seperate. It's actually quite complex, and I still don't quite think I understand the difference between a Croat, a Serb and a Bosniak.

The standard is not the highest, it must be said and the economic reality is that as soon as a player shows anything potential, he gets sold. But they are sports mad and every big high-rise estate has playing areas which are fully used most evenings although it must be said that you are as likely to see basket ball being played as you are football.

The biggest issue though is the blatant corruption than runs rife through the Croatian football federation and the blatant favouritism (although I concede that I have prejudiced eyes when it comes to this) that has been consistently shown towards Dinamo Zagreb for decades now.

I prefer Hadjuk... Red and Blue stripes away kit, and I remember them from my youth when they used to play in the Yugoslav league. You probably have to say that the break up of Yugoslavia has significantly weakened their football clubs. Very rarely will a Dinamo Zagreb, Partizan Belgrade etc do well in Europe.

The standard is not the highest, it must be said and the economic reality is that as soon as a player shows anything potential, he gets sold.

I think this is the stem of the reason behind yesterday's protest, yes it's been a long laying issue, but Halilovic, after a very good season at Sporting Gijon wasn't picked in the squad, instead, 2 Dinamo Zagreb players were, to put them in the ship window, so to speak. The corruption is so blatantly obvious it's ridiculous.

Would be tough for him to get a game. Not sure who the two players you mean are but ahead od Halilovic I imagine he would have Rakitic, Modric and Kovacic in his position.

Marko Rog and Ante Coric. It would be difficult for Halilovic no doubt, but I'd say he's a better player than both, and should have definitely been in that squad.
