Group D Permutations taken from (http://www.uefa.com/uefaeuro/news/newsid=2377638.html)

Tuesday 21:00CET: Czech Republic (1) v Turkey (0), Croatia (4) v Spain (6, qualified)

Spain are through and will win the group with a draw, meaning a last-16 game on Saturday in Lens against a third-placed team. The Group D runners-up play Italy at the Stade de France on 27 June.
Croatia will qualify with a point and top the group with a win. Croatia will only miss out on the top two if they lose, the Czech Republic win and overtake them on goal difference/goals scored/disciplinary (if those are all equal, Croatia have a superior coefficient).
Czech Republic must win and either overhaul Croatia for second place or finish as one of the best four third-placed sides, though mathematically that could be achieved with a draw.
Turkey require a victory on matchday three to have a chance of being one of the four best third-placed teams.

More information including how third place qualification works and the draw for the next round is available here: http://cpfc.org/forums/showthread.php?t=265971.

Neuer has a mare from time to time. He's allowed to get away with it, though, because he comes out of his box and makes clearances.

Brett

Just done a bit of head-scratching. The 5pm matches, particularly Hungary v Portugal, will massively impact matters.

If Hungary win, no-one can qualify in third from group F. They would have 7 points, Portgual 2; Iceland will have either 5, 3 or 2 and Austria will have 4, 2 or 1. Iceland and Austria can't both get to 5 and 4 points.

In that case, Turkey would be guaranteed a place in the second round and therefore will play Wales.

If Hungary do not win, there will almost certainly be a guaranteed third place qualifier from group F. Hungary could finish with 4 or 5 points, Portugal with 3 or 5, Iceland with 2, 3 or 5 and Austria with 1, 2 or 4. Both Portugal and Iceland, assuming they both draw, will have better records than Albania who will drop out. If Portugal win, their 5 points will match an Iceland win and they will finish top two. Hungary will qualify in third with 4 points. If Portgual win and Iceland draw, the Vikings will have three points but superior goal difference to Albania. If Portugal win and Austria win, the table with be Portgual with 5 points, Hungary and Austria in second and third place with 4 points each, enough to qualify.

Should also be noted that in the event of Hungary not winning, Germany will be guaranteed to play Slovakia and Croatia will play either Hungary, Portugal or Austria. There is a minuscule chance they could play Iceland but it would be dependant on a higher scoring draw in Hungary v Portugal and there must be a draw in Iceland v Austria.

Simples.

I'd never go that far.

For a start, the atmosphere inside the grounds has been mostly very good. There's also been loads of last minute goals. The Iceland - Hungary game was superb.

This format is shit and does encourage teams to sit back, but World Cup 2010 was a truly awful tournament. No atmosphere, not many memorable games, and they were playing with a petrol station football.

This tournament, by that incredibly low benchmark is a thousand times better.

that wasn't a great tournament either, the worst final ever, it didn't help with the boiling hot conditions and no night games, from my memory the 74/78/82/86 and 1990 were great WC's the 1994 started the trend for dull defensive playing for draws football that has been with us ever since, saying that the Euros have usually been far better.

No it was a wonderful tournament in so many ways and you're ignoring an awful lot in your summary. I don't have the time or inclination to list all the great moments, but even if I did, you still wouldn't agree so there'd be no point. Just have to disagree

I love the tournament because I always love the summer tournaments, and the novelty factor of it makes it exciting. For example watching Iceland V Hungary is the international equivalent of Wolves v Peterborough in a third round of the FA cup, you wouldn't watch that, but you'd happily settle down with a couple of boys and roar on Iceland.

However this 24 team format is so negative, because it encourages teams to defend like hell to get third place. For example England v Slovakia, if only two teams went through in the group, the Slovakians would have had to beat England. At least a couple of their players would have had to cross the halfway line in the last twenty minutes, giving both sides the chance of scoring.

If we are determined to be more inclusive, lets go to 32 teams, but get rid of qualifying for 16 seeded teams, with the remaining countries pre-qualifying. The format would be the same as the World Cup. I think even Scotland might scrape in in this format, probably after a playoff with the Faroe Islands.

the last 2 WC's have been dreadful

Woah! I thought 2014 was great. Attacking football and some truly great games. That semi-final was one of the best games I've seen, and hilarious too.

24 teams is shit but introducing even worse teams wouldn't be good either. It'll never happen now but the easiest way to fix this problem is to return to 16 teams.

This format is shit and does encourage teams to sit back, but World Cup 2010 was a truly awful tournament. No atmosphere, not many memorable games, and they were playing with a petrol station football.

This tournament, by that incredibly low benchmark is a thousand times better.

Agreed.Nothing will top that World Cup.Most of the group games were a snoozefest. It's like everyone just agreed to play for 0-0s.
